to the background, the sounds of a 2A type high school crowd (maybe) and announcers I've never heard before, I could feel a little anger swell up in me. About what ESPN has done to college football. They have done their part, and then some, to make a mockery of it. No offense to any Chanticleer fans. But bowls, the portal, pay-for-play, so much of this lies at the doorstep of ESPN.

Not sure how many fans are going to fly over to the bowl game. I haven't checked the prices on flights, but aside from the cost the travel time has to be considerable to get there.
Seems like the Hawaii bowl always has low attendance without ESPN's help.
I agree with your point though, just think this bowl is not the best example. Most of the other 58 bowl games this week between 6-6 or 7-5 teams can be used to make your point. Bowl season is not what it used to be-too many bowls now.

These bowls are organized and created locally. Most bowls are unprofitable to teams anyway. Yet colleges continue to go? Schools and coaches pad their resumes which makes them responsible too, not just ESPN. The colleges and universities created this mess with NCAA vs, OU Board of Regents in 1984. ABC televised all games up until 1981. After that case, the conferences and schools negotiated their own TV deals. ABC, NBC, ESPN and others all got involved after that time.

An organization including all conference schools and independents standing firmly together as one could have wielded a ton of power. They could have stood for education first, then athletics. Instead, they signed up for this--went for the money that ESPN and other networks offered. And...here we are.

Football is the same on the gridiron. Sure there’s opt outs, transfers for money (NIL), ESPN is practicing capitalism like most other entities.
My point is provide me a football game and I’m watching and definitely appreciating the guys playing.
