Anyone hear tommy Bowden on xm this morning?

Sep 2, 2015, 12:16 PM

I felt like he took a little dig at Clemson. He seemed bothered that he pushed for facility upgrades but fired him before they we in place. Idk, I might be looking into it too much.

He did do a lot to get the program going the right way.

He did say spurrier dug his own grave with the retiring comments. I could sense his dislike for those dirtpeckers haha.

There is some merit to what he's saying. If we hadn't

Sep 2, 2015, 12:19 PM

fallen behind in the facilities race, who knows how his stint at Clemson would have gone?

tb began the facility upgrades that have helped us improve as a program and he ran a clean program that emphasized academics and character..we should all appreciate that..but we kept tommy a little too long, rather than "not long enough".

go tiguhs!!

I didn't have a problem with us going in a different direction when we did. Just stating that things might have turned out differently had the facilities upgrade ball been rolling sooner.

if he had left sooner, what is happening might not be happening. We may have hired a crappy coach, Dabo may have went somewhere else so I'm happy with the way things have worked out and where our program is heading. I don't think Dabo plans on going anywhere.

Dabo? Things didn't take off at Clemson until he hired Morris. I still believe Dabo is more of a visionary than TB, but the assistants and coordinators are the X and O guys out there and TB was slightly more of an X and O guy than Dabo. Dabo is smart enough to surround him self with the right coaches.

Side note: I am a little nervous about losing CM. That's probably where my comment is coming from.

over Dabo taking over and rocking-n-rolling. And no, it's not all because of facilities. Facilities aren't why we lost to Duke a week after beating Miami....or taking Merriweather out.....or refusing to get rid of inept assistants.

He is responsible for getting the upgrade ball rolling

Sep 2, 2015, 12:29 PM

Recruiting picked up at Clemson just because of his name(no where near where it is now, but far better than the decade before him)

He brought Brad Scott to Clemson
He brought Jeff Scott to Clemson
He brought Tony Elliott to Clemson
He brought the program back from the dead, just unable to get over the HUMP.
He brought Dabo to Clemson and recommended him for the HC job

He would have kept his job had he fired his OC. Dabo's first job as interim HC was to fire that OC

He should always get the credit he deserves. I'd place him as 4th or 5th on a list of most important Clemson HC's.

Howard
Ford
Dabo

Then choose between Pell and Bowden for 4 and 5.

Without Bowden's name and his desire to convince those in charge that they needed to improve everything if they wanted to compete, where would we be now ?

Pell did more at Clemson in 2 years as head coach than Bowden did in his 8 1/2. I'd give it to Pell. Also, Tommy had MORE than enough time to get us where we are now. Nobody gets 8+ years anymore, he has NO RIGHT to be angry, except at HIMSELF. Were he still here, we'd still be a middle of the pack ACC team playing bowl games in Idaho.

Re: He is responsible for getting the upgrade ball rolling

Sep 2, 2015, 1:40 PM [ in reply to He is responsible for getting the upgrade ball rolling ]

I don't think he would've kept his job if he had fired Spence. He went through several OCs trying to replace RichRod and never could.

Bowden pulled us out of one of the darkest periods in Clemson football, but his teams were always erratic and unreliable. They'd upset teams they had no business beating, and turn around and get beat by nobodies. Every time the seat heated up on Tommy the team would suddenly get better and he'd save his job.

I'd put Bowden as our 6th greatest head coach:

Ford
Howard
Heisman
Dabo
Riggs
Bowden
Pell

The top 3 all had undefeated seasons, Ford won a national title, Howard was the elder statesman who lead the program for decades, Heisman made us believe that a small Ag school from the south could compete, Dabo is having an extremely successful run, and Riggs brought the game to Clemson in the first place.

Bowden and Pell laid groundwork for the coaches that followed them, and Bowden outranks Pell because Pell was a cheater.

Re: He is responsible for getting the upgrade ball rolling

Sep 2, 2015, 2:20 PM

I barely missed that segment, as I heard them talking about it just as I started the car.

Admittedly, I was PO'd at Bowden when he was coaching too - mainly for "Clemsoning". The losses to Duke and Wake after beating top-5 teams just became ridiculous, and I felt like we were all on edge - just waiting for the next inexplicable loss.

However, we owe the man a lot. He turned our program around 180 degrees from the Hatfield/West era and exponentially increased our recruiting. He gave an unknown real estate developer named Dabo a chance at coaching and really set a benchmark as to what we could be. That may have been his downfall - he showed us that we could knock off the top-tiered teams in the country. Unfortunately, he wasn't consistent and we all craved more.

Personally, I just didn't see the fire that's necessary to compete against the top teams in the country, week after week. We all saw the "Well, that's the thing, there were 2 teams out there and one of us has to lose. It's ok - we'll get 'em next week" - press conferences, and that kind of calm, Christian demeanor after a loss didn't sit well.

I think in the end, he'll go down like GWB's curve. People couldn't wait to see him go, but in hindsight he reallly wasn't that bad. We certainly could have done worse, and he helped our program more than we'll ever know. He seems to be a great guy, still holds Clemson dear and I wish him nothing but the best. To this day I'm surprised he isn't coaching somewhere.

Who and why would anyone be listening to him?

He would not have gone any further as long as he had the same Offensive Coordinator.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Are we finished paying him finally?

Sep 2, 2015, 1:28 PM

He seems to be popping up in the media more often all of the sudden, must be because his buyout finally ran out.

Re: Anyone hear tommy Bowden on xm this morning?

Sep 2, 2015, 1:35 PM

Fact of the matter is that the "Mad Scientist" was the problem and Bowden wouldn't let him go, at least not midseason. Therefore, he took the fall, and now we have played in 2 ACC Champ games (won one), 2 BCS bowls (won one), we have beaten UGA, LSU, FSU, VT, Auburn, OSU, and the dirtpeckers while they were all ranked, we have had 4 10+ win seasons and have taken recruiting to the next level.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Difference: Vision. Dabo had a vision and embraced Clemson

Sep 2, 2015, 2:08 PM

as the place that vision would play out. Bowden sought improvements but I never felt he went ALL IN on Clemson. That might have been because of his brother's dealing with Auburn.

Sep 2, 2015, 5:07 PM

Tommy got a more-than-fair going-away present.

Clemson got Dabo and a rocket ride back to prominence ... and an occulus to boot!

The Capons got just a taste of glory to make it all the more painful when they have to return to dirt-pecking guano to survive.

All in all, I'm pretty happy with the way things are.
