Any scenario where we win out but lose the #1 slot?

I don't think so as long as ND wins out.

We got the #1 ranking in large part because of strength of schedule. Others will get tougher over the next month. Especially Alabama

We'd have to play badly against WF, Syracuse, and SC. I don't think ND, FSU, or the Coastal champ having more losses than anticipated would cause us to drop if we look good.

whip FSU and utterly destroy Syracuse, WF, and Psycholina. Reason -- Syracuse, WF, and Psychos will not have good W-L records.

Absolutely but not LSU or Alabama. If we win out and LSU or Alabama win out we'll keep the #1 ranking. However, let's say Baylor wins out. Then they would have 3 wins against top 15 teams (currently). The same with OSU. They win out and they'll have wins over top 10 MSU and Iowa as well as Michigan. Whereas we have a top 5 win and a top 20 win by seasons end (Barring we actually win out). This is why we need a ranked coastal division opponent in the title game. That extra relevant win could be everything.

If LSU or TCU/Baylor win out I could see it. Each of their remaining schedules are likely better than ours.

the eye test matters

Probably doesn't matter as far as being in the top 4 (we win and we're in) but at this point if we pass the "eye test" we very well may keep the #1 spot. Also helps us if ND wins out.

they could unseat us, or an undefeated B1G team, too.
But if we're 13-0, I'm looking for tickets to a New Yr's Eve bowl.

It really doesn't matter whether we end up #1 or #4 - as long as we win out we're in. At that point, all four teams are obviously elite. I'd love a match up with TCU, or especially Baylor. Those two generally fold when they face an elite defense.

supposedly strong SEC schedule. OHSt may pass us too, if they win out impressively, even Baylor if they hammer the good teams remaining on their schedule. Right now, we just need to beat FSU.
