Who awarded Cole the Offensive MVP after the WF game?

Nov 18, 2014, 2:53 PM

Just wondering because Dabo keeps referring to this as proof that Cole Stoudt is a good/serviceable QB. I would think that Dabo would be the one choosing the award winner but just my guess. Personally, I think it's laughable that Cole got an award from that horrific performance, but I'm just wondering who decides who gets the award. Anyone know for sure?

Only reference I heard was

one of the ESPN announcers said it as the game was ending.

Cole was 27/42 for 282 yards, 3 TDs, and another INT. Not like he did it against Alabama.

Wake Forest has a top 50 defense

Nov 18, 2014, 3:36 PM

And their pass defense is what's kept them in the top 50. They're not Alabama, but you might want to actually check out the stats before trying to make a judgment.

Re: Wake Forest has a top 50 defense

You can't be serious. Syracuse put up 30 on wake. Want to know how good 'Cuse offense is? They put up 10 on Duke, 27 on Villanova, 17 on NC State and 6 on Louisville, 15 on ND and 20 on Maryland.

Wake is hardly a top 50 defense, I don't care what stats say.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah, sorry. Forgot to just make #### up

Nov 18, 2014, 4:31 PM

Teams score a bunch of points on Wake because Wake's offense is so bad, not because their defense isn't any good. Syracuse also gained only 370 yards while scoring 30 points on Wake, which illustrates my point.

would you call a 27-42 completions 3 TDs 1 INT and 287 yards

Nov 18, 2014, 3:01 PM

a horrific day?

Ok, looking at the stats in a vacuum, it's not horrible. But I actually watched the game, see the level of competition, see the tools on the Clemson offense and everything else involved in the game. Weighing all of that, I think the performance was anemic and pedestrian at best. This was the worst WF team that Clemson has played in a while and we were TIED at halftime. WF has only beaten Gardner-Webb and Army. They have lost to every other team on their schedule. Every other team that beat them was winning at halftime with the exception of Clemson. If you ask me there wasn't an offensive MVP. He won it by default, not by making plays to win the game but by not screwing up badly enough to lose it. If you call that an accomplishment or proof that he is a good QB then your standards of what constitutes a commendable award is significantly lower than mine.

I'm not saying that Cole played great that day

Nov 18, 2014, 4:10 PM

but to be honest other than one or two mistakes he played a good game and it was probably the best he played all year. If anyone not named Cole had that stat line no one would say that was horrific.

Artavis Scott sure made it look a lot better taking one jet sweep to the house. Maybe he should have been offensive MVP.

That's how Dabo knows it's legit, and that he can cite it as proof that Cole is the man.

He played well at Wake

Nov 18, 2014, 3:34 PM

Not sure how you decided he didn't. This is a good example of fans just thinking a guy is playing bad because they don't the player.

Nov 18, 2014, 3:43 PM

Wrong, it is an example of a fan knowing what a good QB looks like and people like you who spurt out what is hand fed them instead of thinking for themselves.

Re: He played well at Wake

Nov 18, 2014, 3:58 PM

I'm honestly using the eye test for Cole against Wake, Syracuse, BC, and Louisville. Wasn't it like 3 offensive TDs in 4 games? Without the return for a TD by Hump and a defensive TD where would we be right now. Due to Cole's inability to get us on the board, the defense is having to be perfect.

There were so many times that we talked about how "that pass attempt would've been an INT against better competition." Teams let Cole slide in about 4 or 5 potential INTs in other games.

I remember against BC, Cole got tackled by a slow defensive lineman by just standing there. What about him not going down with about 3 guys around him and having the ball stripped from his hands. I could go on and on. It isn't personal. I guess I'm just spoiled by Boyd. We got upset at some things he did, but this is just the most painful QB to watch I've ever seen at Clemson.

agreed

Nov 18, 2014, 4:31 PM

Stoudt for another year would give me nightmares im so glad he's a senior

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So UofL, Syracuse, BC, and Wake's defenses...

Nov 18, 2014, 4:36 PM [ in reply to Re: He played well at Wake ]

weren't good competition? Those are some of the better defenses in the country. That's not to say that Stoudt always played well in those games, but his QBR was actually pretty high against BC, Syracuse, and Wake.

You guys are acting like Stoudt's performance against GT was par for the course, when in fact it was a complete unraveling, and not something you would've expected based on his most recent work.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: We (me and my scoks) were at that game

Nov 18, 2014, 3:52 PM

OK, do you think playing well (again, I wouldn't call that "playing well") against WF constitutes Dabo using it as justification for propping him up?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maybe he's not being "propped up"

Nov 18, 2014, 4:38 PM

And maybe the GT game isn't indicative of what Stoudt had done in the three games prior.

Nobody complained then, because Stoudt did play well

Nov 18, 2014, 4:39 PM

But all the haters felt the need reevaluate that performance in light of what happened against GT. As if how a guy plays in one game changes whether or not he deserved to be the MVP of another game.

Quit scapegoating Cole - Chad needs to step up and take

Nov 18, 2014, 4:41 PM

some pressure off of him. Chad's "20 plays for Cole" was well-known to GT, and they were ready. Chad needs to get creative and quit announcing his plays. He needs to show some integrity by taking some responsibility and help take away the scapegoating of Cole!
