Time For Change

Time for Change
I would have been shocked by what we saw Saturday in Raleigh, NC if it happened 20 years ago but not in today's college basketball world.

In case you did not see it, long-time college basketball referee Karl Hess ordered two fans sitting on the front row to be removed from the arena during the N.C. State-Florida State game Saturday. This is even bigger news in Raleigh because the two fans were two former North Carolina State greats, Chris Corchiani and Tom Gugliatta

I have no idea what the pair of former Wolfpack players said, so it is not entirely appropriate for me to criticize Hess or the security at the RBC Center on Saturday.

Both former players admitted afterwards that they were riding Hess pretty hard, but both said they did not use profanity or threaten him in any way. In fact, both players had family with them which included two of their daughters which were between the ages of 11 and 14. I have no idea how each raise their kids, but would hope they would not use profanity in front of their daughters especially in a public place. Also, a Florida State official confirmed no profanity or threatening words were used.

Hess also did not go to N.C. State personnel to assist him. Instead he did not follow protocol and used RBC Center security instead.

As a result the ACC has publicly reprimanded Hess with this weak statement from the head of the ACC John Swofford:

"Karl Hess is one of the best on-court officials in college basketball, but the ACC has established a game management protocol, which allows the opportunity to potentially diffuse any situations before they reach the level of ejection. His reprimand is a result of a failure to follow that protocol."

I have seen disturbing trends among basketball officials in recent years. Therefore, I think there needs to be a new direction with officiating in the game starting next season.

I think the following changes are needed:

1. Nameless. I think the officials ought to be assigned to the games but should be there only as officials and not as part of the game in name. They should not put their names on the television screen. Their names should not be on the box score. Radio announcers and television announcers should not refer to them by name. Officials do so many games and are on television so often they become known in arenas. They are not celebrity status but the point is that we should not even know their names. It will take some time for the old guys to cycle out but in a few years we should not have a clue as to who these guys are.

2. Cut the conversation. In my opinion an official should be there to officiate the game and not be a part of it. We should not know them. We should not know their personalities. They should not communicate with fans, players or coaches as much as they do. They are there to do a job and should be emotionless during that contest. That is not happening today. A Clemson games I have noticed basketball officials having conversations with fans. Most of these conversations are light hearted but should never happen. During timeouts several officials have conversations with media on press row or professional scouts. This may seem trivial but this adds to the human aspect. Officials don't need to be humans for these two hours. They are there to officiate, not socialize. During dead ball situations I see officials joking with players. I have seen them smile, laugh and pat them on the butt. In my opinion this should not take place. During the game itself I have seen officials having conversations with coaches. This should not happen. It is distracting and should not take place. In summary, I think officials should limit any conversations to those required by the job. It makes them look unprofessional and adds the human element to them.

3. Desensitizing. Officials should never feel threatening and should be allowed a safe environment to do their jobs. However, we have gone overboard with protecting them. At Clemson anytime there is a replay in basketball we have our security guy head to half court right by their sides. It looks silly and it creates unwarranted attention. Over protection leads to more sensitivity in my opinion. The officials have become increasing sensitive to any kind of criticism. An official should not be concerned with criticism and should not even hear it. However this is a growing concern. They hear the criticism and too often react to it. An official should recognize that criticism is part of the job. It comes with the territory. Every job has negatives and criticism is one of the negatives of their jobs. Sometimes you just have to sit back and take it.

These suggestions could have a positive effect on the game and clean up scenes like what we saw Saturday in Raleigh. You can never control criticism from coaches, players and fans, but you can control how officials react to it. It is much easier to control the response of three men than trying to control the emotions of hundreds or thousands in the stands.

Comments:

4. Hire an official who has the fortitude to call technical fouls on and throw out Coach K. As long as he can influence, whine, whimper, cuss, romp/stomp and profanely push his agenda and cause on the officials then your suggestions are going nowhere. If a coach is going to be allowed to conduct himself in the manner in which K does, dont expect the fans to be any different. The clean up starts with the disolving of the good old boy network.

Mickey,
You have obviously never refereed any type of competitive sport. I ref'd rugby matches for 10 years and I can say that there were both good and bad officials. Some, like Hess do let the power go to their heads, but most refs just do their job.

1. This seems rather trite, do you really think that not telling people the ref's names is going to help.

2. Really? REFS SHOULD BE MACHINES, NOT HUMANS?. If that's the case, why not just make every arena and field have cameras and computers do the job? Reffing a game is incredibly stressful, and sometimes that stress gets to you, as it would any human. Yes, referees should have thicker skin, and most do, but to deny them of the outlet to talk to players, fans, and coaches while reffing a game would be to deny that outlet of stress. That would make the calls WORSE, not better.

3. I agree.

Hess was wrong, yes. He is an arrogant prick, yes. But he is only one person, don't throw the baby out with the bath water.

I totally disagree Mickey. The more transparency the better. Even if they announce the officials before the game, to the average fan, they are totally anonymous. They depend on that for some of their outrageous performances. What we need is to hold the officials more accountable for what they do, with real penalties for bad behavior, or calling attention to themselves.

Mickey,
Please remove Jack Bailey from the prayer list. Thanks to all who prayed for Jack during his time of recovery.

Mickey, this is probably your worst work yet. What an odd and unlikely-to-happen point of view. It's HUMAN nature that the game needs most. "Machine?" Really? In case you missed it, sports is first and foremost a form of ENTERTAINMENT and a SPECTATOR EVENT. It exists for the fans enjoyment. Part of that is camaraderie with players, coaches, refs, etc. If it weren't for the fans paying $$ to watch sports, there would be no sports programs in our schools. Give the fans what they want... ENTERTAINMENT, Celebrities, HUMANS! I bet you are a fan of the "no celebration rule" in College sports too, huh? Lets just take all the human emotion out of sports... then lets see who pays to watch a bunch of machines just doing their jobs.

Ridiculous opinion, Mickey.

BRING BACK THE FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!

First Amendment rights have been violated.

FANS, FREE EXPRESSION, AND THE WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS by Howard M. Wasserman
Fans at sporting events engage in speech ranging from booing to symbolic expression about teams, players, coaches, officials, team executives, other fans. A state university is plainly bound by the limitations of the First Amendment. NCAA or conference rules are not subject to First Amendment scrutiny unless a public university adopts and enforces them as their own. Fans are free to root against teams and players or to make negative or critical statements or comments, fans cannot be limited only to positive or supportive comments. Heckling is unbounded in subject matter. The only is good taste, class, civility, and sportsmanship. The First Amendment is not absolute but the categories of speech falling outside of First Amendment protection remain narrow, finely defined, and limited.

The problem here is not Hess,or the other ACC officating crews. The problem is having a commissioner who is a graduate of a member institution.Swofford needs to step down, the ACC then needs to hire a commissioner who did not graduate from any of the member institutions and then that commissioner should instruct the officals to call the games fairly and squarly, and if need be call "T"s on Coach Roy and Coach K.

Can't agree with you on this one Mickey. Clearly Hess went too far but not socializing with the players/fans isn't going to change that. The problem is in the "punishment"handed down by the conference. You want people to not do something then. There must be pain associated with it when they do. A reprimand is nothing. In fact the public outcry is certainly likely to have more impact than the reprimand.

There simply should be no reason for law enforcement to take direction from the officials. In fact the ONLY interaction between the officials and law enforcement should be to keep them safe.

Sorry wildman, but the first amendment restricts federal law on speech limitations and nothing else. Any interpretation otherwise is unconstitutional. Any State, county, municipality or school can make rules limiting speech. Yep.

Mickey,
While I agree that it is unfortunate that officials are assuming power not theirs, it is up to the governing body sanctioning any event to make rules in this area. It is possible to do what you suggest but I doubt the language could be clear enough to enforce them without harm being done. A better idea is to give the AD's the power to impeach both refs and coaches within their league.

Heck, I can remember Joe Bello as a ref. We got on him good but he was a good pro. We don't need robots out there - one poor episode like this should not tarnish all the refs - even the ones we don't care for.

Refs should referee....coaches should coach...players play......the only time a referee should move from a referee role is if a player or coach digresses from their roles.....game management should have handled this situation....I am not surprised of this incident...Mr. Hess has at Clemson game a this year threatened fans on front row that he knows to be vocal that he was tossing them if they got loud.....He needs to not ref another ACC game this year....course this is like asking our school prez's to actually remove Swofford!

GrayBengal is rerring to Lou Bello and he was a trip to watch ref a game. Always did it in a good natured way.

Maybe coaches could have a veto each game on assignment of officials ... sort of like lawyers during jury selection ??
