Overall Report Analysis-Grades and Comments:
Offense-Rushing
Interior running game-What can you say about a near perfect rushing attack. James Davis, C.J. Spiller and Demerick Chancellor all had success inside of the tackles because of their ability and a dominating offensive line. I am not sure I have seen Clemson be more dominant upfront in a game. Three backs over 100 yards says it all.
Perimeter running game-This was the best perimeter running game all year. Spiller got to the edge quickly and gained big chunks of yardage. Davis scored on the longest run of the year due to some great blocking on the perimeter.
Option game-N/A.
Draws-Like everything else, the shotgun draws worked.
Short yardage running game-On second and short the Tigers had runs of 2, 6, 6, 10, 24, and 21 yards. On third and short they had runs of 64, 20, 19. I would say that is converting short yardages.
Yards after contact-Excellent. I thought all three backs broke tackles especially Davis and Chancellor.
Offense-Passing
Pass protection-The Tigers did not have to pass very often but when they did the protection was there. Clemson did not allow a sack all night and gave Proctor, Harper and Reese time to throw. Tech only hurried the Tiger QBs twice.
Underneath passing game-The Tigers only threw it 17 times and most of those were underneath throws. Stuckey looked good on his one screen pass. Spiller and Macko looked good after a couple of swing passes. Pearson had a great 2-yard touchdown from Harper.
Intermediate passing game-The Tigers did not throw too often in this range. Grisham had a nice catch.
Vertical passing game-The Tigers did not have to test the Bulldogs deep but when they did Stuckey came up with two gems. The touchdown pass was a great diving catch and the juggling catch on the sideline was fantastic.
Screens-Stuckey’s run and catch was set up by great downfield blocks.
Drops-The Tigers had few drops this week.
Yards after catch-Stuckey and Spiller made very good looking runs after the catch.
QB throws on time-Once again, all three QBs looked well schooled in their drops and throws.
Offense-Overall
First down yardage-Clemson ran 29 first down plays and had seven or more yards 16 times. The Tigers were only in second and long twelve times all night.
Third down conversion-Clemson was 3 of 8 which is pretty good but the news here is they only had eight third down opportunities.
Big Plays-Davis had the 64–yard touchdown and two 18-yard runs. Spiller had runs of 13, 14 and 19 yards and a catch of 13 yards. Chancellor had runs of 17,18, 21, 27 yards. Stuckey turned in three big plays 21, 31 and 34 yards.
Trick plays-Clemson did not have to resort to any tricks.
Defense-Overall
Tackling-Perhaps the defenses best tackling effort. Clemson missed few tackles Saturday night.
First down yardage-Tech ran 31 first down plays and only eight went for seven or more yards. Fifteen first down plays went for three or less yards.
Third down conversion-The Bulldogs were held to just 6 of 18 on third down conversions.
Limit of Big Plays-The Tigers held La Tech to two runs of more than eight yards (10 and 16 yard runs). Tech threw it 46 times and only six were completed for more than 15 yards.
Defense-Running game
Interior running game-Tech had 29 carries for 33 yards. Clemson swarmed to the football all night and gang tackled the Bulldogs.
Perimeter running game-Tech could not get to the edge. I thought Clemson’s corners did a nice job against the run.
Option game-N/A.
Draws-The Tigers played perhaps their best game against the draws.
Short yardage running game-Tech had three plays in short yardage. Two of the runs were for negative yardage and the other was a four-yard gain.
Yards after contact-The Tigers limited the yards after contact with superior tackling.
Defense-Passing Game
Pressure-Nice pressure all night including four sacks. Adams and Merling continued to pressure the passer but Sapp and Cumbie had their best games and each recorded a sack. Sapp’s 15-yard loss was a huge play. The defense also had five quarterback hurries.
Underneath passing game coverage-Clemson did a nice job of running to the football to eliminate any short catches and long runs.
Intermediate passing game coverage-Tech did get a few curls and intermediate routes against the Tigers zone.
Vertical passing game coverage-Clemson eliminated the long ball completely.
Screens-The Tigers did not a nice job here of minimizing the screen game.
Passes broken up-Chancellor, Butler, Clemens, Clay and Sapp all broke up passes. The best news is that Butler had two picks, Vincent had a great pick and Nick Watkins returned his pick for a score.
Open field tackling-Terrific.
Special Teams
Kickoff returns-As good as you can get. One kick off, one touchdown return. The original blocks were nice and Spiller’s effort was almost as nice as Ford’s run. Great job here.
Kick off coverage-Poor. Clemson has to do a better job here. This looked more like BC than UNC or FSU.
Punt return/block-Poor. Two fumbles are unacceptable and could be momentum swings in closer games.
Punt coverage-Snap, protection, punt, coverage-Outstanding. Chason had his best night punting.
Field Goals/extra points-snap, hold, protection, kick-Dean kicked the ball low early but got his last one off higher.
Overall Team
Energy, Enthusiasm, Leadership-The Tigers avoided the letdown again with a completely dominating performance. The seniors and staff had the team excited to play. The energy in the stadium was once again incredible.
Coaching
Emotionally prepared-Great job of avoiding the letdown.
Game plan-Excellent on both sides of the ball. Why pass if you can pound it down a team’s throat?
Adjustments-Little were needed.
Personnel-The staff did a nice job here. Merriweather was not needed. Davis got his carries and got out. Spiller received valuable time then gave way to Chancellor. Harper and Reese got quality snaps. The offensive line played a ton of young people. The defense keeps shuffling in young players each week.
Time outs-This was not a factor.
