The Depth Chart

The Depth Chart
The SID office released the depth chart for the North Texas game yesterday. Here a few notes at each position.

Quarterback
Starter-Kyle Parker So
Reserve-Tajh Boyd Fr
Notes-No surprises here. Parker has had an excellent pre-season camp and Boyd has improved tremendously since the spring.

Running Back
Starter-Andre Ellington So or Jamie Harper Jr
Reserve-Rod McDowell Fr
Notes-Ellington and Harper are listed as the co-starters but the main story here is the emergence of McDowell. He has set himself up for some significant playing time unlike your typical third team back.

Full Back
Starter-Chad Diehl Jr
Reserve-Casey Nobles Sr
Notes-As expected, Diehl came back in good shape and continues to impress as a blocker.

Wide Receiver
Starter-Xavier Dye Sr or Brandon Clear Jr
Reserve-DeAndre Hopkins
Notes-Dye and Clear are listed as co-starters and both are looking for more consistency. Hopkins has impressed coaches in his first camp and should avoid a red-shirt.

Wide Receiver
Starter-Marquan Jones Jr
Reserve-Bryce McNeal Fr
Notes-Jones has finally been more focused and consistent. He is poised for a good season. McNeal show flashes of brilliance but is also inconsistent.

Wide Receiver
Starter-Jaron Brown So or Terrence Ashe Sr
Reserve-Brandon Ford So
Notes-Brown had a good enough camp to jump up here and is now listed as a co-starter with Ashe.

Tight End
Starter-Dwayne Allen So
Reserve-Drew Traylor Jr or Darrell Smith Fr
Notes-Allen is leaps and bounds more talented than the reserves. Traylor might be the biggest surprise on campus. He may now be able to contribute this fall.

Left Tackle
Starter-Chris Hairston Sr
Reserve-Brandon Thomas Fr
Notes-Hairston returns for his third year as a starter and he is helping tutor next year’s starter Thomas, who is very talented but lacks experience.

Right Tackle
Starter-Landon Walker Jr
Reserve-Phillip Price Jr
Notes-Quietly Walker is on his way to becoming a four-year starter. Price has grabbed the staff’s attention. They feel more comfortable now from a depth standpoint because of his solid camp.

Left Guard
Starter-David Smith Jr or Mason Cloy Jr
Reserve-Kalon Davis Fr
Notes-Smith and Cloy are listed as co-starters here due to Cloy’s hard work in returning from the broken leg. Both are very capable juniors who we should expect to see their best football so far in their careers.

Right Guard
Starter-Antoine McClain Jr
Reserve-Matt Sanders So
Notes-McClain is poised for a very good junior season. Sanders is listed as the back up but Cloy could move here in an emergency.

Center
Starter-Dadlton Freeman So
Reserve-Ben Ramsey Sr
Notes-Freeman is the key to the offensive line. He is one of the top young centers in America. Cloy is most likely the back up here as well.

Defensive End
Starter-DaQuan Bowers Jr
Reserve-Malliciah Goodman So
Notes-Bowers missed extensive time to be with his family after his father passed away. How will he respond? He will have to play well because Goodman can push him.

Defensive End
Starter-Andre Branch Jr
Reserve-Kourtnei Brown Jr
Notes-Branch’s motor never stops. Brown has gotten better but not enough to overtake Branch.

Defensive Tackle
Starter-Jarvis Jenkins Sr
Reserve-Rennie Moore Jr
Notes-Jenkins is an All-ACC candidate while Moore moves inside full-time with Cumbie gone.

Nose Guard
Starter-Brandon Thompson Jr or Miguel Chavis Sr
Reserve-N/A
Notes-This is one of the biggest surprises of camp. Chavis is listed as a co-starter with the incumbent Thompson.

SAM
Starter-Quandon Christian Fr
Reserve-Daniel Andrews Jr
Notes-Christian was going to be the starter but Cooper will be missed.

MIKE
Starter-Corico Hawkins So
Reserve-Spencer Shuey Fr
Notes-Hawkins makes this a better linebacking corps. His instincts and tackling are improvements for this position. Shuey has been solid.

WILL
Starter-Brandon Maye Jr or Tig Willard So
Reserve-N/A
Notes-Willard has made a big move here and is now a co-starter. This linebacking corps could start a freshman and two sophomores.

Cornerback
Starter-Marcus Gilchrist Sr
Reserve-Xavier Brewer So
Notes-Gilchrist moves back to corner and is a very smart player. Brewer has had a very good camp.

Cornerback
Starter-Byron Maxwell Sr
Reserve-Coty Sensabaugh Jr
Notes-Maxwell is one of the most physical corners in the ACC. Sensabaugh has done well enough to get snaps as the nickel.

Strong Safety
Starter-DeAndre McDaniel Sr
Reserve-Jonathan Meeks So
Notes-McDaniel might be the best safety in America. Meeks has a lot of physical tools for a big safety.

Free Safety
Starter-Rahard Hall So
Reserve-Carlton Lewis So
Notes-Two high school teammates are listed here. Hall had a great freshman campaign.

Special Teams
PK-Chandler Catanzaro Fr
P-Zimmerman Jr
SN-Matt Skinner So
KO-Spencer Benton So
H-Michael Wade Sr
PR-Marcus Gilchrist Sr
KR-Marcus Gilchrist Sr
Notes-Gilchrist is the top return man for both punts and kicks. Catanzaro beat out two scholarship kickers in his red-shirt freshman season at place-kicker.

Comments:

If the team can stay healthy and benefit from a positive turn-over ration and this can be a special Clemson year.

Mickey, do you ever watch practice? Allen may be the most gifted athlete on the team, but he was also more gifted than Palmer, and had to red shirt. Traylor, not Smith, is the # 2 TE, and also has ability. He had some pretty good players ahead of him when he was on defense (Sapp, Bowers, Merlin, Alexander); and when he was moved, he had to learn the position and was behind 3 seniors, one who is now in the NFL. Maybe you were surprised, but how much football have you played???

footballexpt = Mr. Traylor? Good grief man, he just listed the depth chart. I would say Traylor would be a surprise to most people who "don't go to practice". Aren't practices closed to the media?

Even the coaches said they were surprised by Traylor. Here's to hoping he makes the most of this opportunity.

What has happened to Spencer Adam? I figured with his speed, he'd be a factor.
