The Big Picture
The Big Picture
The past three and a half days I have heard some of the comments about Coach Purnell and the disappointment in the loss to Missouri in the NCAA tournament. I read the comments by some from yesterday’s blog and have had several callers on my radio show the past two days on the topic.
And to be fair, I did write about some concerns about the effort in the final three games and the future of the program in terms of personnel. However, I think some have gone way overboard with the criticism.
Purnell has done a terrific job here and I hope he is here for a very long time. He will become the all-time winningest coach in school history in two years and I look forward to that day.
Sometimes we get too emotional and too irrational about our coaches. I have also been guilty of that but never when it comes to Purnell.
Let’s remember Clemson has had 95 senior classes in basketball and this past senior class won more games than any in the history of the program.
I am disappointed in the way the season ended but we must look at the entire body of work when evaluating a coaching staff and this staff’s body of work is very impressive.
So what are we complaining about? We did not make win an NCAA tournament game for the third straight year? That is our biggest complaint?
I don’t think this irrational complaint is limited to Clemson basketball though. I think that is the nature of sports fans. We are never satisfied and we always want more out of our teams.
For example, if a team in college football went winless a few years in a row and fired their coach the fans would want the new guy to just win a few games. They would claim that they are tired of going winless and just a few wins would be satisfactory.
Let that same new coach win three games in his first year and he would be popular among the fan base. Let him win three games three years in a row and some would eventually ask why he can’t get them to the next level.
If a coach takes over a program that wins four or five a year and turns into a 7-5 program the fan base would be satisfied….temporarily. If that same coach won seven games three years in a row then they ask why he cannot get them to the next level.
South Carolina football has a losing record in its school history and Steve Spurrier has won 35 games in five years, which is a school record for a five year span. However there are tons of Gamecock fans that want to know when is he going to win nine or ten a year.
Clemson fired Timmy Bowden for the same seven and eight win plateau of his program and we all asked why could he not win a title. Dabo won the division in his first year and the fans said he did something in his first year that Bowden could not do in nine years. However, let Dabo lose in the ACC title game three straight years and the same fans would ask when was he going to win the ACC?
If Dabo won the ACC three straight years but lost in a BCS game then some would ask when is he going to get us over the hump?
It is our nature as fans. Jim Tressel got heat this year from some fans and sports writers who cover the Ohio State program. This is the guy that won the national championship, several Big Ten titles, several Rose Bowls and never loses to his arch rival. But some fans claimed his offense was boring and he was not utilizing their quarterback correctly.
Frank Beamer has won 99 games over the last ten years in Blacksburg, VA. He has 62 wins over the last six years. He at least 10 wins in eight of the last ten years at Virginia Tech but some fans are not happy. Beamer had to stop taking phone calls on his weekly radio show because of the negativity surrounding his offense.
The point is that no program is immune to it and no matter where you start, eventually it will happen to every coach. Ask Paterno. Ask Bowden. Roy Williams has two national titles at North Carolina and ask him how he was criticized this season. It is our nature as fans to want more and there is nothing wrong with wanting more. I just wish we were more rational in understanding why we don’t always get what we want as fans.
The key is in the comprehension. I don’t think we need to lower our expectations. Heck, I was the guy that thought we have settled for less than we deserved in football. I used Alabama as an example of not settling and always raising the bar. But we do need to understand that there is a difference between Alabama football and Clemson football just like there is a difference in Clemson football and Clemson basketball.
I have said many times here that I love Jack Leggett and want him to stay at Clemson for ten more years but I am harder on him than I am Purnell because of the level of what he took over. Clemson baseball is a top ten program in terms of history, tradition, support and facilities. Clemson basketball is not even close to that level so Purnell gets a pass.
As a New York Yankee fan I remember winning four World Series titles in five years from 1996-2000. I also remember wanting to fire Joe Torre because we went several years without a title, so I am guilty here as well.
Sure, I was extremely disappointed in the effort the last three games and there is no excuse for that. That was my point yesterday. I also do have concerns about the recruiting. But I also look at the big picture and love what I see with what Purnell has done here.
Remember I was the one that was concerned about baseball recruiting two or three years ago but I said that I trusted Leggett to get things turned around. I have the same confidence that Purnell will continue what he has built here even though he is now battling the monster of expectations that his success has created.

Good blog Mickey. We all need some perspective sometimes. You're right in saying that the criticism aimed at Purnell started because Clemson couldn't get past the bar that Purnell himself set. How many teams have made the NCAAs 3 years in a row? I'll always want more, but I'm willing to have a little patience with a coach who built our program from almost nothing to one of the top programs in the ACC.

Timmy? Booby would be offended.

Excellent blog, and I agree with you 100%. The truth is that Oliver Purnell is not happy about losing three straight games in the first round of the NCAA tournament, either, and you can bet that he is doing everything he can to correct that problem right now. My guess would be that losing hurt OP more than it did any of our fans.

Mickey--
It is not only the loss of NCAA games but big games like season ender at SEU and 1st round ACC the past two years to wquads we should have beaten. Was it lack of effort? Some contribution from that was obvious but also a strategy and game plan which never changes. OP needs to address that and soon. Did you see VT take on UConn when Delaney--their ace--was a non-contributor? Change the scheme when it is demanded, please Coach Purnell.

I was disappointed in the way our season ended. Sadly I wasn't surprised. We don't seem to have the hunger or competitive fire a lot of teams do. Not sure how much of that is players and how much is coaching.
Just felt like the Wake, NCS, and Mizzou games were not up to our usual standard of effort. This is especially noticeable on D. You may not always win but you should always hustle.

bbrown cren, Delaney has not been as big of factor as when he played us. The officials have changed the way they call fouls because of him and it took our game to expose the fraud he is.

I give credit to Oliver Purnell for all the accomplishments of the basketball program. I certainly don't advocate making a change. However, objectively speaking, when the press is defeated and turnovers don't lead to points, Purnell's teams are almost unbearable to watch. Our half court offense is and has been horrible for years. The lack of fundamentals if glaring. If they are going to take the program to the next level, they have to address the deficiencies. To run from that and settle for less just because "it is better than it was" is equally unacceptable.
Constructive criticism does not make you a coot. This is a high profile ACC program. A little heat comes with the territory.

Until we develop a half court offense and half court defense our upside will be very limited.

FRUSTRATION (Part 1) - I agree OP has taken us to a very respectable level from where we were to today - BUT can he crack the "BIG Dance" egg?? - That's the big question presently, not his body of work as whole - The NCAA tournament is the REAL PRIZE & how far you succeed in it - I'm tired of hearing about all of the ACC goals we have or have not attained - I've lived with that debacle for over 50 years - Successful "NCAA Tournament" coaches are prepared with game plans, flexibility, etc.. - We've had previous coaches with comparable talent take us to the "Sweet 16" & beyond –All of these accolades of the last 3 or 4 years doesn't change the fact that he can not coach his teams past the first round of the NCAA - The main goal is to win, not to talk about what we've accomplished

FRUSTRATION (Part 2)- My real concern is recruiting - Will OP continue to bring comparable talent, which at present is very suspect with only one marginal player for next year's class - We miss Shaka & I don't think we have any one on the staff that can recruit like he did - I hope I'm not writing this same email 2 or 3 years from now if OP is still here

yogman, how can you call Marcus Thornton a "marginal player?!?" He was Mr. Basketball in Georgia at the 5A level this year, and led his team to the state championship game. His stats across the board are phenomenal, and plenty of very good programs would love to have signed him. Many people feel he just missed being a McDonald's All-American. He is going to be an excellent player for us.

Some of you people need to search around, check the nooks and crannies, and see if you can't find a way to get a life - maybe as a coach or a recruiter. Its like the maxim "if you're so smart, why aint you rich?"
Here's a formula; (1) Pull for your team, win, lose, or draw. (2)Shut up and enjoy it. Folks, it aint rocket surgery. Let it be fun - like it used to be.
And remember this. The sun shines on no dog's ass perpetually. Translation: you can't win em all.

I think OP is a super classy guy, the kinda guy you want as a best friend and neighbor. But this is big time D1 college athletics. Its got to be about only one thing... winning. He has turned us around. I think he has already peaked. The two years that he went to NIT finals and ACC tourney finals were his best years. The year after was worse and this year was worse than last, and on paper next year appears its going to be worse than this. Basically he's Tommy Bowden. If you're content with just getting a 20 win season and a NCAA appearance, I have no doubt you'll be happy under OP. But if you want more and to build the program into a power, he's not the guy to do it. I guess his superstar status with most fans is more a result of the pathetic history of Clemson basketball, than any true success he's had here. And going 9-7 in a watered down ACC isnt something to hang your hat on.

Once again, I LIKE where our basketball program is right now. I would love for it to get even better and I have every confidence that it will.
I also loved what happened in "DEATH VALLEY in 1981" ... but I'm realistic enough to know that we may never see that level of success in any sport again and to cling to that as the benchmark down the road is to probably cause myself grief and heartache on a regular basis.
I prefer to be happy and to appreciate the good things we have without constantly harping of what we haven't accomplished.
