The Atlantic Division Thus happens in the callers to my radio show and e-mailers to this blog as well. Sunday and Monday after a loss means fans are out for blood. They want answers and they want heads to roll. By Tuesday and Wednesday a much more rationale fan settles in and the upcoming game is the major topic. Since it is Tuesday and since I am an optimist, I am ready to return to my normal state. Losing still hurts. It is unacceptable. But my thoughts are now less negative and more productive when it comes to this Saturday and the rest of the 2009 season. There are a couple of reasons why. First, the schedule gets easier. Also, this team can win the Atlantic Divison. Maryland is 1-3 and struggling. They have home losses to Middle Tennessee and Rutgers. The Terps continue to turn the football over at a rapid pace and Clemson is a 13-point favorite in College Park Saturday. An open week will help Clemson heal and superstar running back C.J. Spiller’s toe should be better after the entire week off. The Tigers then host Wake Forest who has also struggled this season. The Deacs are 2-2 including a last second win against Stanford and a loss at Boston College. The Tigers could be double digit favorites at home against Wake Forest. Perhaps the toughest game left on the schedule and the only game a remaining against a team currently ranked is the road game at Miami. The Hurricanes should be favored against Clemson but a loss here does not kill the chances of a division title because Miami is in the other division. Coastal Carolina is a non-factor and a chance for this team to get emotionally ready for the two biggest weeks left on the schedule with a home game with Florida State and a road game at NC State. The Seminoles are schizophrenic with a terrific blowout win at BYU but bad performances at home against Jacksonville State and South Florida. NC State started slow with the pathetic offensive performance against South Carolina but has improved against a week schedule in the last three weeks. This game is difficult because it is a road game against a division contender. The final ACC regular season game is a home game against Virginia who may be the worst team in the league. I don’t expect much of a challenge here. The regular season ends with a trip to the arch rival’s home field but hopefully an ACC Championship game is waiting the following week in Tampa. The Atlantic Division Here is what the rest of the division looks like at this point: Maryland-Like Boston College, this team does not have the talent to win the division. The Terps have looked bad so far and I don’t believe they can turn it around. Wake Forest-The Deacs have issues as well and a loss to Boston College means they start out the ACC season behind the eight ball. It is hard to imagine this team coming back and winning the division. In my opinion, only three teams have enough ability to win this division, Clemson, NC State and Florida State. Clemson-Obviously Clemson has issues but the Tigers two losses have come by a total of seven points to two teams ranked in the top 15. If Clemson can improve, the schedule is set up for a run at the division title. Florida State-Boy, how do you get a handle on this team. They look terrific in Provo Utah but awful in Doak Campbell. NC State-The Wolfpack and Maryland are the only two teams in the division without a loss but neither has played an ACC game yet. The difference is State has enough talent to win the division. A 6-2 record wins this division outright but a 5-3 mark will come down to tie breakers. Tiger fans need to pull for Boston College over Florida State and Wake Forest over NC State this weekend. The Seminoles are five-point favorites in Beantown but State is a one-point underdog in Winston-Salem. The Brad Hughes All-State Insurance Agency

Why does it always seem to come down to us having a chance because other teams stink even more than us?

I tent to agree that it comes down to us, FSU, and NCSU. I think 6-2 will win the division no matter where the losses come, but I kind of think it will come down to two or three teams at 5-3, and tie breakers will decide who wins. Right now, we have to beat MD, because we probably can't win the division without winning that game.

Its fun to play this game, but we need to focus on the task at hand. Last year, Maryland had looked (not quite as) bad and had a loss to MTSU. We all know what happened. I expect their usual gameplan to keep everything in front of them and make us execute all the way down the field. Hopefully, the more aggressive D will limit Fridge's ability to find the soft spot in the D and adjust to attack it repeatedly late in the game.
Currently, road teams in conference play are only 1-6.
There is no room for error in the conference overall, especially within the division. This loss last year put us in position without any margin for error.

I don't think FSU will stay inconsistent. I still think they’re likely to run the table in the Atlantic, except for maybe Clemson.
VT showed that the way to beat Miami is with a pass rush. FSU gave Jacory Harris all day long to pick them apart—which he did. Our pass rush has been OK so maybe we have a shot at beating Miami if Napier can figure out a way to get some TDs. Maybe. If.
I still think NCSU is a question mark. We’ll know a lot more about them Saturday.
TCU showed that it's easy to pass underneath on our defense, and for the QB to run. Ponder and Wilson have been good at both, so that bodes poorly for us unless Steele fixes some things.
The Atlantic is attainable, but only if Napier, Parker, and the receivers step it up a couple notches. Our opponents will key on Spiller & Ford. So there needs to be more options on offense. Hopefully the TE's will be better utilized in the passing game.

I'm still hopeful that we can win the division, but look forward to the day when Clemson doesn't have to rely on other teams to be worse than us to do so.

I still think Dabo made a huge mistake in tellin Will he would play and now seeming to throw him under the bus,all the rah rah pales when youre not really that honest ,since Terry Don got here Clemson hasnt gotten better in anything but Basketball,hiring the discount coach is going to bite us for a long time Im afraid.We coulda had TCUs coach,or a lot of others but TDP is makin us a solid 7-5 6-6 type team.It pains me to say this,why should we be all in?Dabo please dont make public your promises,I love ya man but you gotta to be true to these kids.

The bottomline is beat Maryland, FSU, NCSU and Wake and who gives a rat's ass about how they do against each other.

By definition, the other teams must be worse than us for us to win the division.
If the other teams were better than us, then they would have won the division.

Unfortunately, I think they lose @Miami, FSU @home, and @NCST. This team just isnt very good. Makes too many mistakes at crucial times. Lack of experience on offensive staff is a killer. No matter how good a defense is, it takes points to win ball games and ours couldnt score in a whore house.
