TCU Review
TCU Review
I have come to realize three things after Saturday’s loss to TCU.
First, I should never write a blog immediately after a game. A two day cooling off period is best when it comes to voicing my opinions.
Second, no negative matters after a win and no positive matters after a loss.
Third, sometimes you need to give the opposition credit.
So I have cooled down for 39 hours now and for the first time a ready to review the TCU game. Also, it does not matter that:
*Saturday’s loss does nothing to stop Clemson’s goal of winning the Atlantic division of the ACC.
*Clemson did not allow a sack against the team that leads the nation in sacks.
*The Tigers much maligned offensive line did a terrific job of neutralizing All-American Jerry Hughes, who had only two tackles and neither were for a loss.
*Clemson allowed only two negative yardage plays to a defense that attacks the line of scrimmage and prides itself on tackles for a loss.
*The Tigers gave up only two touchdowns. One came after a fluke where the ball hit off of the shoulder pad of the defender and then went 25 yards downfield to an open receiver. The 58-yard reception was as fluky as it gets. The other was the 25-yard touchdown pass where the receiver battled Byron Maxwell and after both players juggled the ball, the TCU receiver pinned the ball against his hip for the score.
*Spiller rushed for over 100 yards against a defense that does not allow 100-yard rushers.
Nope. I hate losing and will not accept losing, so none of that matters. Stats are for losers and the only stat that matters is the win-lose record.
I do think it is OK to analyze the game and take some positives and negatives out of each outcome. However, in the end, the only numbers and letters that matter are Ws and Ls.
So Clemson lost Saturday. The Tigers fell to 2-2. They lost another close game in the final minutes of play. It matters not that they lost to a team now ranked in the top ten but only matters that they lost.
Now, what happens?
The facts do point out that the Tigers control their own destiny in the Atlantic Division, a poor division at that. Among the other facts are that the Tigers have issues that have to be addressed and addressed soon.
The football season is long and issues can come and go throughout the campaign. Currently, my biggest concerns are:
1. Red Zone offense
2. Wide receiver play.
3. Execution at crucial times
4. Mental toughness
The red zone productivity is by far the biggest concern among the staff and fans. This team cannot reach its goals if they continue to struggle in the red zone. There are enough problems for plenty of blame in the red zone but right now it seems everything is broken in this category. The coaches, offensive line, quarterback, running backs, wide outs and tight ends have all made mistakes in the first four games this season. If the problems are multiple then the answers will have to be multiple as well. The staff will have to do a better job with play selection and personnel packages and the players will have to do a better job of executing the play.
Wide receiver play has been a problem the entire season outside and inside the red zone. The problems at wide receiver are also multiple. Other than Jacoby Ford, the Tigers are young and inexperienced at the position. Outside of Ford, most of the receivers lack the speed or athletic ability to separate and get open. A receiver does not have to separate from the defender but in the cases where he can’t then he has to be able to catch the ball in traffic and that has also been an issue.
I think talent is an issue at the position. I fit into the group that does not go to practice every day which is not fair in judging the playing time. However, it is fairly clear to me that the most athletic and productive wide receivers are Ford, Marquan Jones, Jaron Brown and Xavier Dye. Brandon Ford has been hurt but I am not sure what the other candidates bring to the table.
In the end, everything comes down to execution. Every play call is the right call if everyone blocks the way it is designed. Running plays require the proper alignment, the correct pre-snap calls along the offensive line, the proper snap count, a quarterback center exchange, correct blocking techniques, the quarterback running back exchange, the correct read by the back and then a good physical effort from the back. If any of these aspects are not executed properly then the play is not a success. You can substitute the passing play executions as well and the story remains the same. As simple as it sounds, execution is the key to every play in the sport.
My final concern is mental toughness. How many times can these fans, coaches and players pick themselves up off of the deck? Clemson needs some success. The Tigers need success soon or the mentality of losing close games will begin to set in. I am not sure how you teach a football team to win the close ones but that has to be done soon.
I was described by a friend this weekend as “Pollyanna.” That might be the case but at this point, I am tired of losing and I am tired of sitting in the pouring rain. I do have to believe that the weather will get better and I do have to believe that this football team has some big things in store for the rest of this season.
Finally, I have concluded how I will judge this season. Quite simply, if Clemson wins the Atlantic division of the ACC then this season has been a success. If the Tigers do not win this division then this season has been a failure. I am not sure it could be simpler than that.

You are 100% correct Mickey. If we go to Tampa the season is a sucess, if not its a complete failure. I feel like I am still wet, either from the rain or my tears. If we dont win Saturday it could get really bad. Dabo is the most likeable of all the coaches we interviewed. He is 6-5 at this point which is mediocre. I don't think he has a few years to change the system. To be honest, he inherited a far better team than TB did and the rest of the schedule is not that hard. The Atlantic is very, very weak. If we don't take it this season then when will we. We lose Spiller, Ford, Sapp plus a few others. Do you think next year looks like we will be a better team from what we have seen so far. IMHO, I am getting nervous. Are you???

It amazes me how so many people were expecting a 7-5 or 8-4 season this year and very few of them expected to win the Atlantic. Now, four games in, and "so-so" performances, the season is only a success if we win the Atlantic?!?!? So we beat Miami and all of the other ACC teams, but lose to FSU, and they get the nod on head-to-head. This team finishes 9-3 out of the ACCCG, beating Miami and USC on the road, and this is a failure??? I understand being upset about the loss, but get real.
I hope the team has more resolve than many of the fans or else it will be a long season for everyone.

My biggest concern is the Sesame Street commercial that is played on Pawvision.
oh yah, and the woo-hoo.
Posted by otisman on September 28, 2009 at 11:29 AM EDT #
An additional concern will be not to wear Spiller out. A little more of Harper/Ellington at certain points early in the game would be a good thing. As would an occasional reverse to Ford to give the defense something to think about.
Spiller was fantastic Saturday...but even Superman needs a rest once in a while.

Even NFL players make mistakes. I can accept that. But I can’t accept Dabo hiring a novice like Napier to be OC (and TDP allowing it). Napier’s poor game-planning, coaching, & play calling is not giving our (imperfect) players the best chance to win. If we had a top-tier OC, we might well be 4-0, and Top 10, with recruits loving us.
Dabo made a great hire in Steele. But promoting Napier to OC, was a rookie-HC mistake that will continue to cost us all season, and may cost us the Atlantic. We just don't have the kind of multi-faceted, unpredictable offense that you see from top tier OCs.
I disagree that every offensive play should work if executed well. E.g. If the D loads the box, and you're outmanned, then an inside run will fail because there won't be enough hats on hats in the box. Top tier OCs give you a better chance by outwitting the D and being unpredictable. We were outwitted in our losses.
The Atlantic is in reach only if the offense improves immensely.

The Atl Div is in reach b/c the rest of the teams look even crappier at this point. FSU is Mary stinks, Wake and BC aren't very good, FSU is capable but schizo, and NCst might be good but still not sure about them.
We are as good as any in the Atl, and it is very winnable. But at some point we will have to win a close game where the offense comes through late.

Agree 100% with Razz. It amazes me how many fans comment on how we have too high of expectations. I am unrealistic because I see things half empty after 17 gd years without a title. Please tell me how after at least 180 games and at least 20 losses like the one Saturday (except from the intense chaffing) I am unrealistic. Didn't we fire TB for mediocrity? Or did we do it to buy 10 more years of excuses? Or was it to save money to increase TDP's retirement bonus coming soon? I am not unrealistic Tiger brothers... the ones who say I am have lost their way or their mind and are use to settling. I love my team and that will never change but I refuse to lower my idea of what Clemson football was and has to be again and I will not stop until we are back where we should be period.

Last year 5-3 won both divisions. We currently are 1-1 in the ACC. With FSU being so schizo, you've go to think they will drop at least one conference game they shouldn't.
Our remaining conference opponents: Maryland, WF, Miami, FSU, NC State, VA.
Bottom line, if we can go 4-2 against that schedule we have a good shot at the Atlantic. If one of those wins is over FSU, our chances are very good.
So I agree that Atlantic Division champs is a realistic measuring stick.

Just some thoughts:
> While certainly not as dominate as we obviously would like, I thought the OL was okay considering Hairston didn't play. Hughes was supposed to destroy us w/o Hairston. So I thought the OL adjustments and play were pretty good. Well enough to win if we could catch anyway.
> How come Palmer isn't getting more balls thrown his way with the lack of production from WRs? He seems to catch everything he touches.
> Why not get Ellington onto the field more in the backfield with Spiller split wide as a WR?
Posted by CUTigerman28 on September 28, 2009 at 03:04 PM EDT #
Note: I know Palmer dropped a couple of balls Saturday. But I still think he has at least the third best hands on the team.

I don't think that 5-3 will win either division THIS year. NCSU might play spoiler, but I think it's more likely that we need to run the table in the Atlantic or else FSU will. It won't matter if FSU or Clemson drops one more non-division game. It'll come down to the FSU-Clemson game-- either on tie-breaker criteria or simply on records.
I actually think Clemson can win the Atlantic, but only if Napier (perhaps with the help of some seasoned advisors) steps it up a couple notches.

BOTTOM LINE...LETS GET IT TOGEITHER AND WIN SOME BALL GAMES.
I EXPECT A 180 TO 200 YD RUSHING GAME WITH A 13 FOR 23 AT 125 YDS PASSING..
LETS JUST GET THE JOB DONE.

I am not happy about losing, but most people had GT and TCU down as losses before the season started, so I don't know why we are surprised. Bottom line: if we beat MD, Wake, FSU, NCSU, and UVA, then we will win the division and go to Tampa. That is the goal, and all of those are winnable. Heck, after seeing the Miami-VT game, I think the rest of the games are very winnable. Then again, a lot of teams are probably looking at us and thinking we are beatable, so who knows what will happen.
Posted by Locotiger on September 29, 2009 at 10:38 AM EDT #
Razz: I agree that it probably comes down to the FSU game. In my mind, we could drop the Miami game & one other & still have a chance as long as we beat FSU.
But you may very well be right that might be good enough.
I also agree with Loco that all our remaining division games are winnable.
Which all reinforces my real point that winning the Atlantic is a realistic expectation.
