Sham; 2010 Personnel
The Sham
It did not take yesterday’s news to let us know that the Heisman Trophy is a sham but the evidence confirmed my thoughts about the process again yesterday.
It did not take FSU going to the Gator Bowl to let us know the bowl system is broken but that news was reaffirmed Monday.
College football is the best team sport for the first three months of each season and among the worst in its final month. Playoffs should take the place of bowls. Bowl tie-ins should be dropped and the bowl should reward the regular season instead of rewarding its bottom line.
On the Heisman front, I can make an argument for C.J. Spiller because I think he is the best player in the country. His 1,145 yards rushing, 445 yards receiving, 918 return yards and 20 touchdowns convinced me he deserved the trip to New York.
Last year Sam Bradford won the award and he deserved it but I could have made a case last season for Tim Tebow, Colt McCoy and Graham Harrell. It would have been difficult to argue with any of the top four candidates a year ago but this year I can make good arguments against each of the five that were invited to New York.
Colt McCoy completed fewer passes for fewer yards with a lower percentage for fewer touchdowns and more interceptions this year than he did last year. He threw for fewer than 300 yards in eight of his games this season. In the two biggest games of the season (Oklahoma and Nebraska) McCoy passed for 127 yards and 184 yards with one touchdown and four interceptions. Sound like a Heisman winner?
Ndamukong Suh had one great game this year when he had 12 tackles and 4.5 sacks against Texas in the Big 12 title game. But for the regular season he had only 7.5 sacks. He did not have a sack in five of his games. He had more than six tackles in only five games this year. Against Oklahoma he had four tackles and against Kansas he had three.
Mark Ingram had a good year but he was held under 100 yards rushing in five games this season. Against his arch rival, Auburn, Ingram had 16 rushes for 30 yards and no touchdowns. Ingram had two games this season where he rushed for more than 150 yards. I am not sure Alabama misses a beat when second team running back Trent Richardson enters the game.
Toby Gerhart had a great year but I am skeptical of him because the only time I saw him play an entire game was when Wake Forest held him to 82 yards on 17 carries and no touchdowns. The only thing that stands out is his 311 carries.
But the biggest sham of the ceremony this season is Tim Tebow. I am not sure what impressed voters more, the fact that he did not throw for more than 255 yards in any game this season or the fact that he had only two games where he rushed for more than 100 yards this year with one being against Florida International. Even the most biased Florida fan would tell you that Tebow did not play well this season compared to his other seasons.
I felt like we lost another football game yesterday when I got the news Spiller would not be going to New York. Most fans I talk to felt the same way and wish there was something that could be done.
At least Spiller handled it with class. “I certainly wanted to make it to New York for the Heisman presentation. It would have been great for this football program and Clemson University in general. But, I have done the best I could in every game. I have no regrets,” he said/
“I want to especially thank the Clemson fans for their support. I know they came out in great numbers in the fan voting poll (Spiller finished second in that poll) and have been very supportive of me my entire career.
“I want to thank all my teammates, especially the offensive line.
“We have one game left. We have not won a bowl game since I have been at Clemson. The seniors want to go out with a win.”
Classy quotes from a classy kid.
2010 Personnel
I have received some e-mails about Clemson’s juniors with concerns about the NFL draft. I am sure several of the juniors will ask for their evaluation but at this point I really can’t see any junior leaving. I would not be surprised to see DeAndre McDaniel, Chris Hairston and Jarvis Jenkins submit their paperwork to see where would stand but I think all three need to come back to school.
McDaniel got off to a great start this past season but he did not play as well coming down the stretch. I thought his open field tackling became a weakness in November. Also the safety class is deep with high ranking safeties at Tennessee, Texas and Southern Call ranking ahead of McDaniel at a position that is normally not a big draft position in the higher rounds.
I think we could hear something on Willy Korn soon. I would not be surprised if that came after exams. I would think that Mason Cloy and J.K. Jay will still be rehabbing through the summer with their injuries so that would be a concern.
Like almost every other year I could see a couple of players transfer out of the program or not return to school but recruiting is the only other personnel area where the roster may change for 2010.

It is a sham, and the award is more about politics than it is about performance on the field. Tebow and McCoy went because they were there last year, and their teams are ranked way up in the polls. Ingram went because he has the most impressive stats on the number one team. The boy from Stanford actually had some good numbers, so I think he deserved a trip, even though he may not deserve the trophy. I have no idea why Suh went, even though he is a dang good defensive lineman.
One question I have for you, though, is do you think he would have gone to NYC if we had won the last two games, or even the title game?

this blog makes me lose faith in humanity.

I'm so disgusted with the whole thing. I, too, feel like we lost another game, and it stinks. Is there anyone we can e-mail our displeasure to? I'd love to start blowing up someone's inbox with a bunch of e-mails! And I'm a bit light on work today so I've got the time to do it!

Gator Bowl sold out in 2 hours...do you blame them for wanting to sell tickets? I blame the ACC for promoting this silly 1-win rule, it hurts the bowls

The Gator is a business. It's hard to blame a business for trying to make money... unless you're a Democrat.
CJ probably deserved to be a finalist, as perhaps did Rodgers and Lewis, but Gerhart probably deserves the prize. Gerhart may not have had impressive numbers against Wake, but CJ had a few low-stat days too. CJ would have only flown to NYC in order to congratulate McCoy anyway.
The Heisman & the Nobel Peace Prize don't go to the most deserving candidates, so I don't really care much about them.
Both the bowl and the CJ's Heisman candidacy could have been solved by winning. Clemson is 8-5 in a mediocre conference. Clemson beat ONE ranked team (Miami) and lost to the likes of UMD & SCar. We're not on the national radar. If you want the sport media to talk about Clemson every day, and watch our Heisman candidates, then we gotta win more games.

CJ deserved it, but he, too had bad games. Remember Nov. 28th? You can't diss the other guys for having 2 bad games.
Since the Heisman is as much about the team's recognition nowadays, the TEAM must win the big games to get the candidate visibility. I'm going to have to agree with SandySprings. Win and it will work out the way we want.

Correction - I agree with Razzmataz.

As much as this whole thing stinks for us, the bottom line to all involved is money. I agree, Razz, that the Gator and all other bowls are about the money. If the NCAA and their other leaches are all about the money, then why not pay the athletes? They would say "that's absurd," just like this whole process. Good points on why Tebow did not deserve to go, too.

plyler complains of a sham and dismisses a player he saw play once. pot meet kettle.
Posted by tilla on December 08, 2009 at 03:55 PM EST #
Since it's a business and the players are willing to play for free, there's no incentive for the decision-makers to waste money by paying the players.

The bowls have given Clemson the benefit of the doubt so many times over the last 20 year, it's hard to get too upset that for once, we got the shaft.
Just go to Nashville and win a dang bowl game for a change!

Mickey, I find your argument a little weak. In reading your stats about the bad games other players had, I find many of them better than CJ's stats on his bad days. So, mute point.
Besides, even ESPN was runnning a crawler on the screen all weekend predicting the top candidates. That crawl stated, "determined by using both team and individual statistics." That's a shame. At some point, even the media began giving points for team results for an award that was established for individuals. Now that we know this, lets not get our hopes up about another Heisman possibility - should one ever come through Clemson again. It clearly means nothing, and we shouldn't desire to win a popularity contest anyway.
Lets not forget that we are basically a forgettable football team in a basketball conference. And until we can start dominating our out-of-conference opponents on the field, most awards are merely a distraction anyway.
Now lets go earn some respect in the bowl game. Go Tigers!

The real sham is how our defense played against SCU and GT!!
Posted by cu_tiger78 on December 08, 2009 at 09:03 PM EST #
Bowls are now, and always have been, in the business of making money, they don't have players nor is there any reason whatsoever for them to reward them. Outside of the BCS every bowl decision made this year was cognizant of the economy and the distance fans would have to travel. Your argument is nothing more than sour grapes.
I'm confident that had CJ won the Heisman you would not be calling it a sham. Take off the orange colored glasses and admit that your opinions come from the heart, not the brain. Gerhardt deserves it, he was all Stanford had, everybody they played knew it, and despite that he laced them up every week and ran right over them.

Mickey, I too think that Spiller should have been invited but you have lost your mind when you talk about Ingram, Gerhart, and Suh. First off, Ingram is pretty much the only reason Bama is undefeated, SEC Champs and going to the national championship. I know that the award is not a team award but the ability to put a team on your back when they need you makes him one of the most outstanding players. Gerhart has been nothing but amazing. Have you not seen his stats over the last month and a half of the season. And then Suh... this may have been where you missed the boat by the furthest. He has 82 tackles, an interception, 12 sacks (not 7.5) and 23 tackles for a loss... and did I mention he plays defensive tackle. Now having said all this, I think Spiller should have finished somewhere between 2 and 4 in the voting because everyone was so close but to discount the other players is bogus.
