Landmark at Land Shark

Landmark at Land Shark
For weeks Dabo has said this team has to learn how to win. He said it after the Tigers could not the close one against Georgia Tech. He said it again after the close loss to TCU and again with the loss at College Park.

I never really understood how a team could learn how to win. I have never seen that text book or taken that class. But apparently some learn how to win the close ones and my guess is that is comes with the experience of doing it.

Well Clemson did it with a landmark victory in Land Shark Stadium Saturday.

What does the victory mean?

Well, to this team it means they control their own destiny in the race to win the Atlantic Division of the ACC. Clemson and Boston College are both 3-2 but the Tigers own the tiebreaker over the Eagles because of the win over BC in September.

It means the Tigers tied the school record for a win over the highest ranked opponent by beating the nation’s eighth ranked team.

Saturday’s game was the 538th Clemson has played as the visiting team and it was just the 20th time the Tiger have defeated a ranked opponent on the road. It was just the seventh time Clemson had beaten a top ten team on the road and the 13th top ten opponent the Tigers have ever defeated.

The win broke an overtime losing streak also. Clemson had won its first five overtime games including a win over Miami in 2004. The Canes’ triple overtime win the following season not only broke the unbeaten streak in overtime, it started a new streak. The Tigers had lost their last four overtime games before Saturday.

The game also gave a lot of national attention to several individuals. C.J. Spiller has been named the National player of the week by several websites. DeAndre McDaniel and Kyle Parker have also won prestigious national awards.

Spiller jumped into several media outlets’ Heisman picture. At one time in the pre-season, I thought it would be next to impossible for anyone outside of Tim Tebow, Sam Bradford or Colt McCoy to get an invitation to New York for the ceremonies. However, Bradford is out for the season and Tebow and McCoy have not been able to match their 2008 campaigns. At this point the Heisman race is still undecided and Spiller has a chance to impress voters even more in November (more on this tomorrow).

Those are some of the things we know and those things are exciting. However, maybe even more exciting is what we don’t know. We don’t know what this mean to this football team’s future or the future of the program.

TigerIllustrated.com’s Larry Williams wrote a terrific commentary Sunday entitled “Defining Moment.” In it Williams tells the story of Alabama’s national title in 1992. He said that players from that team pointed to a game at Tennessee two years earlier as the turning point of their program. Players credited that game as the one where they grew up and learned how to win a close one on the road. It was that 9-6 win in Knoxville that helped Bama gain the confidence it needed to go on to bigger and better things.

Can Saturday’s win do the same for the Tigers?

Maybe it won’t mean a national title but will we look back at this win in a couple of years and think this was the defining moment of Dabo’s career at Clemson?

Confidence has to be a bigger factor because now the Tigers have done it. There is a difference in thinking you can do it and knowing you have already done it. Now these players know they can beat a top ten team. They know they can win a close game. They know they can win on the road. They know they can win in overtime.

There have been changes on the offensive line but now the line, Chad Diehl and Jamie Harper know they can be successful in short yardage situations. Clemson’s wide receivers now know they can catch the football on crucial drives. The Tiger tight ends now know they can be a big part of the offense.

Maybe the fans can have more confidence too. Maybe the fans can trust this staff more when difficult times come about because they know this staff can win a big game on the road.

Division titles? Conference titles? BCS bowl game? Those things won’t be known for several weeks but a more confident football team will have a better chance as a result of Saturday’s win.

We do know that marquee wins help recruiting. This week prospects all across the region have access to stories about the individual accolades for Spiller, McDaniel and Parker. You can bet that Clemson coaches will use this win as a message to prospects in the South Florida area. Only three teams have beaten the Canes at Land Shark Stadium and the Tiger staff will be sure to let prospects know.

There is always the chance the Tigers will not be able to take advantage of the momentum. That was the case often times under Tommy Bowden. But I think many of us see something different from this group. At least that is the hope among Clemson Nation.

Hopefully we can look back at this win in a couple of years and call it the turning point of the program.

Comments:

I must say that I've been very impressed with the Tigers the last couple of games. The offensive play calling is much improved and the offense line has played dramatically better.

I wonder if Dabo has stopped changing Napier's offensive plays. A coordinator needs to get into a rhythm - similar to a QB. Did Dabo listen to the criticism and step out of the way? If so, it's helped Napier out tremendously.

The main thing I would like to see at the end of this season is consistency. If Clemson can close out this season and at least make it to the ACCCG, I will have to eat crow and admit I was wrong about Coach Swinney.

Also I'm not ashamed to say that I love CJ Spiller.

Go tigers!

Didn't we beat Wake in OT a few years ago to open the season?

I don’t understand the concept of the players "learning how to win". Against UMD were the players thinking, "We can't possibly beat UMD so I'm just not going to bother to run a crisp route, catch the ball, hit the hole hard, block properly, etc?" That makes no sense to me.

I agree with McRib that the play-calling seems to have improved greatly over the last two games. Even when plays didn't go well, I found myself saying, "That's OK. It was a good call." It makes me wonder whether it was the players who learned how to win or the coaches. I can easily understand how better play-calling leads to better execution and wins.

I hope that the coaches and players can "learn how to win" games that they shouldn't lose (like the UMD game and the upcoming games with NCSU & UVA). And I hope they can "learn how to win" the high-stakes games where the title is on the line, like the upcoming FSU game. THAT would be a turning point for this program.

Go Tigers! 11-3.

We all hope that this win leads to bigger and better things. The last time I felt like we had turned a corner with confidence was the end of the '03 season, but the GT game in '04 killed it.
It is important to keep the momentum going with wins, the rest of which are ostensibly easier to get than the Miami win.
But I have noticed the offense is doing what most of us thought they should, throw more to rb's and TE's and Ellingotn got more carries, too. But most of all the OL has played much better which makes everyone look good.

Weren't we all saying this exact same thing several years ago when a Bowden led team went to Miami and beat a Miami team in the OB...only to turn around a lose to Duke the next week? This team is no different. Let's not forget they lost to the worst Maryland team we've seen in years just a few weeks ago. We are on the same old roll-a-coaster we rode for 10 years...they just changed the name from the "Bowden ride of thrills" to "Dabo's screem machine"!

I am also impressed with the way the offense is evolving. I think the lack of offense caused us to lose at least two games. Although I doubted Dabo & Napier for their inexperience, I will pass on judgement until the end of the season. I pray that we do not fold like the Bowden teams of the past. I hope this is the first step of our team growing into what we all knew they could be.

Well dabo was certainly correct today when he said that if the team were 7 - 0 some folks would be mad about something. The sun don't shine on the same dogs @$$ ever' day and neither do football teams play perfect games. Yeah, yeah I remember beating Ga Tech a couple of years ago and then falling apart against Va Tech. Enjoy the wins. Look forward to the next game and get over the losses. Life is full of ups and downs.

I am pretty sure that Wake game was in 03

Mcrib: Let me save you the suspense...you are wrong about Dabo. Any damn fool can see that he has done more coaching in 11 games than Bowden did in 10 years, regardless of the results. He will take us to the promise land.

Why does most keep bring up the bads, instead of looking forward to the goods. DS is not TB, TB is not TW, TW is not KH, KH is sure as He!! no DF. Two out of those 5 do have alot in common. They both were first time ever Head Coaches. And they both has that fire and passion it takes for winning football games. Not sayin Dabo is going to be a Danny. Just sayin the two have the same fire and passion of getting the most out of what they have.

The 1980 SC game was the turning point that let the Tigers realize that they could win and it definitely paid off in the '81 season. Here's hoping we get a similar reaction from this team.

This team is growing up together. There is a sense of responsbility that has evolved to date that we have been missing. Now it seems like the team is assuming the ownership and responsibility of their actions. Everybody seems like they are doing their part not to be the one that lets this team down. I like it, and I see it growing up to be even better.

I long for the day when we can all be excited about what Dabo is doing without hearing a bunch of Tiger fans remind us about letdowns under Bowden. Dabo is not Bowden, so what happened under Bowden several years ago doesn't matter. Would you be the same way if we had hired someone from another school?
