Hard Copy

Hard Copy
In sports we find what is working for one team or player and others try to copy it. The NFL has been called a copy cat league for years.

Bill Walsh won Super Bowls with San Francisco with the West Coast offense and almost every team in the league has tried to copy his offense.

The league was primarily a 4-3 defensive league for years until some teams had success with the 3-4 and you see so much more of it today.

In college football we see Auburn and Oregon using the fast pace offense on their way to the national title game last year and so many more schools have implemented this type of attack.

After last night's thrashing of LSU by the Alabama defense, I have already received e-mails from readers asking about Clemson moving to the 3-4 like the Crimson Tide.

For the record, I like the 3-4. I love what Alabama does and how they pressure offenses from different areas. I saw Georgia make a big jump to the next level with their move to the 3-4. I just like the way it gives you much more versatility. I also like the idea of getting a better athlete on the field by replacing a defensive lineman with a linebacker. So if Clemson moved to the 3-4 that would be OK with me.

However, it is almost impossible to copy what Alabama does because it is not what they do but who is doing it. Last night after the game Nick Saban said Alabama did not do anything differently than in the first game against LSU. It is like other schools trying to copy Auburn's offense from last year but trying to do it without Cam Newton at quarterback.

The fact is that Alabama could run a 3-4, a 4-3, a 3-3-5, a 4-2-5 or any other kind of defense and be successful because they are the most talented defense in the country.

I know a lot of people don't like recruiting services and they are not the final word but I do believe they give a decent indication of the overall level of talent.

According to rivals.com the Crimson Tide have 30 defensive players listed on their depth chart. They have four five-stars, 21 four-stars and five three-stars.

By comparison Clemson has 28 players on their defensive depth chart. The Tigers have one five-star, 11 four-stars, 14 three-stars and two two-stars.

The strength of Alabama's defense is in their back eight. The Crimson Tide linebackers consist of one five-star and ten four-stars. Their secondary is made up of three five-stars, seven four-stars and one three-star.

Clemson's weakness is in its back seven. Clemson's linebackers are made up of one five-star, two four-stars and three three-stars. The secondary consists no five-stars, three four-stars, six three-stars and a two-star.

Again, it is important to remember that player development and scheme have an awful lot to do with the success of any defense and star rankings are not the only way to judge a defense. However, it is clear to me that copying Alabama's defensive philosophy begins with their recruiting success which is almost impossible to copy.

The Crimson Tide play a physical brand of football but it helps when your nose guard and defensive end are over 300 pounds. It is much easier when your linebackers are 245-265 pounders that run like deer.

It should also be pointed out that no one spends more time, money and attention to detail in player development than Alabama. Their support staff is the biggest in the country. They have spent more money on their strength and conditioning staff, their player development people, their sports psychologist and their nutrition people than any program in the country. Saban leaves no stone unturned at Alabama.

Also it is fair to point out that not all players turn out to be great in Tuscaloosa. They have their share of busts also. But they have a wider margin for error because they have so many more great players. I would compare this to the large market baseball teams like the Yankees and Red Sox. The Minnesota Twins can't afford to make the mistakes that the Yankees can overcome.

So if you were like me, you probably sat in front of your television set last night and wished that our defense could play like theirs. To be fair, 119 other fan bases probably said the same thing. The problem is that this might have been the greatest college defense of all time and one that is not going to be copied, unless it is by the Crimson Tide again in a couple of years.

Comments:

Isn't Kevin Steele's background primarily with the 3-4? I looked at who we were getting last year and just figured that was the direction we were heading.

I would think a 3-4 gives more versatility against spread teams.

But nothing works if the players don't know how to tackle or get off of cut blocks.

mikey, i agree that we're not alabama, but let's compare apples to apples.

"Clemson's linebackers are made up of one five-star, two four-stars and three three-stars. The secondary consists no five-stars, three four-stars, six three-stars and a two-star."

give us a breakdown of VT, and the rest of the ACC. anyone on WVU's schedule other than LSU. talent wasn't the issue of why we got 70 put on us. we're near or at the top in defensive talent compared to anyone on our schedule this year. FSU and auburn may be a LITTLE BETTER, but that's about it.

talent is no excuse.

That's still a lot of stars to give up 70 in the bowl and 39 for the year. Clemson's problem is not stars, its lack of heart and pride.

With the current l.b. coach and coordinator, the addition of l.b.s (subtraction of d.l.)would be a disaster.Steele could run a 6-4-5 and still could not defend the wishbone or the spread. What will be done eventually must be done immediately. There has to be a nice but inconsequential administrative job wh/ would fit him well.

Steele turned down UT?What's next ? A plague of biblical proportions? DABO will be the 1st Clemson coach to lose to the coots 4 straight years.

All those 4-5 stars players have been at Alabama for several yrs since Saban has been there...yet a few 4 stars, many 3 stars, and a couple of 2 stars kicked Alabamas' butt 35-21 in 2010. Stars mean little, the game is played with players and its up to good coaches to get those players to play up to their potential.

Thanks for the level headed commentary. It's not as easy to put together a top 25 offense, defense, or team as many on here would like.

I would like to see you comment on the functional strength development of our team.

Mickey: based on the comments, we're not buying what you're selling. I don't see Clemson fans saying we should be Alabama, but when we make every team look like the Packers and every QB look like Brady/Tebow :-), it ain't talent alone. Let's stop the excuses, face where we are head on and make the changes to be an elite team. If not, let's just start over from scratch.

This has been said by Coach Ford and many other coaches at all levels, "It's not the x's and the o's, it's the Jimmys and the Joes". No truer words have ever been spoken.

Mickey, timely post but if you watch closely you will see that bama runs both the 3-4 and 4-3. Saban was right but I was teaching live watching the game. When they lined up in the 3-4 I quickly pointed out the outside lb's and said watch closely. The te and slot will not cross the los without being jammed and if they have a quick pass called Jefferson will take off only to find the lb's let them go after a 2 second delay and are now waiting for him. No chance. I also noted when they went into the 4-3 if they don't get to the qb in 4 seconds he will be able to run. Guess what happened. My wife thinks I'm a genius but the reality is it's not complicated. I'd be hard pressed to be able to make those kinds of calls quickly enough but I know that defence and the advantages and disadvantages.

Face a huge line with a very accurate passer and fast wr's and you had better have the best db's in the country! Our offense loves to see it because our guys will get open and Boyd can fire it when he isn't running from speed rushers. The talent gap isn't that large. Talent does allow isolation and thus allows doubling in other areas.

Clemson_native: You say it's hard to put together a top 25 defense. Clemson mostly fielded Top 25 Ds. In fact, before Dabo fired Koenning, Clemson was a Top 16 defense 4 years straight.

Scoring Defense Rank:
2011: #81 (Steele)
2010: #13 (Steele)
2009: #25 (Steele)
2008: #13 (Koenning)
2007: #10 (Koenning)
2006: #16 (Koenning)
2005: #11 (Koenning)

In college, it's tough to recruit the kind of mountainous linemen (especially nose tackles) needed to run a GOOD 3-4.

A reasonable expectation for any team would be to (1) only rarely get upset by teams with inferior talent, (2) win half & play close against teams with comparable talent, and (3) rarely upset teams with clearly superior talent. But over the last several years, Clemson regularly gets upset by inferior teams (GT, & NCSU in 2011), pummeled by equivalent teams (SCar & WVU in 2011), and almost never pulls an real upset.

I have one word that describes all the problems for the past 25+ years of Clemson Football.."incompetency" in leadership .

Posted by Mikeyg on January 11, 2012 at 10:17 AM EST #

You can just see the talent that has been fired from Clemson in the last 20 years. Lets see, Hatfield went to RICE. West went to Middle Tennnessee, Bowden to the ACC Network (wow). If Dabo keeps Steele, he'll be back to someones Recruiting Coordinator!
