Game Times

Game Times
I understand the world does not revolve around what I and the readers of Tigernet think but sometimes we all love to voice our opinions. So yesterday I knew the TCU game time was going to be announced but had no idea what the announcement would be. What I did know was that it was going to be a topic of conversation for the rest of the day.

Like many of you, I was surprised a television network did not pick up the game but I was almost as surprised the Clemson athletic department chose 1:00 PM as the starting time.

Last night I contacted an athletic department official to get the reasoning behind the 1:00 PM start time and he said he thought it might have been an attempt to get back to the old tradition that all Clemson home games used to be at that time.

For those that are too young to remember college football before television dictated game times, Clemson played all of its home games at 1:00 PM. There was only one national TV game and there were no cable networks. There was no ESPN, ESPN 2, Lincoln-Financial, Big Ten Networks, Versus, Mountain West Networks, Fox Sports, etc.

The Tigers played their home football games at 1:00 PM. There were no Monday announcements of six day windows. In fact, Clemson did play home night games until 1992. So one o’clock it was.

Obviously times have changed. Television has changed. The fan base has changed. The stadium has changed.

Tigernet has taught us that all Clemson fans cannot agree on every issue and we all have our individual preferences. Personally, I will be there if they played at 1:00 AM but I understand others might not agree.

The market is different today because you have over 80,000 seats. The fan base is more spread out than before but there are also more hotels in the area than ever.

You have the local crowd, the upstate crowd, the midlands crowd, the low country and the Pee Dee crowd. Atlanta has more Clemson fans now also. So, many people are traveling from farther away each year.

You have to consider the soccer moms and dads in the upstate that have Saturday morning games that prefer the 3:30 or night games.

You have the college kids that want the night games because they like the atmosphere at night plus it gives them more time to get “prepared” for the game.

You have the coaches and players that like the early starting time because they can spend more time with their families after the games.

The university would rather play earlier too because it is cheaper to play at noon and one o’clock. They don’t have to pay all of the support people that man the parking lots as much and the lights are not needed.

The highway patrol and traffic coordinators like the 3:30 games because they don’t get the jams in the morning that an arriving crowd for a noon game or the disaster of the departing traffic at night after an evening game.

These are just a few segments of those with interests in the starting times. This is not a complete list of issues either. In summary, there are three basic starting times (early afternoon, mid-afternoon and evening) so here is a quick look at what I perceive as the pros and cons of each:

An early afternoon starting time (Noon or 1:00 PM)
Pros:The players and coaches like this time because they get to spend more time with their families after the game. The game is less expensive because security is not needed as long.
Cons:Recruits have less time to get to Clemson. People from farther distances have a more difficult time getting to the game. Incoming traffic is a mess. It seems like most of the game is played in the heat of the day which is a factor in September. Families with Saturday morning activities have a more difficult time making it to the game. Some students don’t make it because of how early the game is played.

A mid-afternoon starting time (3:30 PM)
Pros:Traffic is a major improvement on the incoming and outgoing because there is not the rush on either end. Local families can still do Saturday morning activities and make it to the game. Long distance visitors have more time on both sides of the game to get to the game and home.
Cons:Heat can still be a factor in September. Coaches and players have a little less time after the game for families.

An evening starting time (6:00-8:00 PM)
Pros:There is a better atmosphere in the stadium at night. The temperature should give a little relief in September.
Cons:Traffic after the game is an issue. Security costs and lights cost more. Long distance travelers require hotel rooms. The coaching staff and players have less family time.

The bottom in is that I will be there no matter what but I live less than two miles from the stadium. I have compassion for those who have other issues each Saturday. I would probably have more of a preference if I lived in Charleston or somewhere where I had to travel several hours to get to Clemson.

Personally, I love night games in Death Valley. The stadium looks awesome at night and I think a louder stadium means more of a home field advantage. In the event where the school gets to pick the time to play like we did with Middle Tennessee or TCU, however, I think a compromise of 3:30 probably makes the most sense.

Comments:

Mickey,

I love 3:30 games! I travel from Raleigh the night before, but am lucky to have family in Seneca, so no hotels. I grew up with all 1pm games, but love the 3:30 start time.

Also not sure if you heard about Bob Pollack, but he has gotten some very bad news and please keep him in your prayers.

While it is true that there are considerably more hotels in the Clemson area now as compared with just a few years ago, these hotels 'skyrocket' their rates during football season and require a two night stay. Many fans do not like to be gouged like this and spending 3 or 4 hundred extra dollars for a game is not 'ccol' in these times. While night games are fun, especially for the youngsters, it is a terrible inconvenience for those who travel for hours to get to Clemson for every home game. As I do. Being on the road at two a.m. excites me even less. I have yet to figure out why one must be 'prepared' to attend Clemson football games...........but I'm no teenager!

I recently heard that the administration refuses to hold Thursday night (ESPN)games at Death Valley. Anybody know if that's true, and if so, why?

The only thing that matters is the outcome of the games. The next day and for years after we'll be more concerned about whether we won or lost the game than what time it was played. The national media will only care whether or not we won the game. If night games provide a louder, more intimidating atmosphere then it makes sense to provide that advantage to the team. I think we as a fan base can get over being inconvenienced if it means we've got a better chance to win.

Incidentally, I live in Columbia and have terrible on-campus parking. For night games I have to wait a couple of hours before anyone in the parking lot gets out and then I've got the 2.5 to 3 hour drive home. So night games mean I'm usually not home until EARLY the next morning but I'm more than willing to do that if there's ANY chance of the enhanced gameday atmosphere contributing to a victory.

With the home schedule this year there is little opportunity for night games. If about half the games are later starts and the other half are early starts then there is no reason everyone can't be happy. No others on the horizon other than FSU look worthy of a late start. We'll have our fair share of noon starts for TV but there should be a way to make everyone happy. We had a choice and chose to go with 1pm.

It also sells very few extra tickets to the non-season ticket crowd. So, yes, security costs might be higher but putting a game as a 5pm or later start also gets you a large amount of ticket sales to the local crowd. How about throw a bone to the local businesses also?

Very stupid decision considering the big picture of this year’s schedule.

This is the way I look at it, Mickey. If the TCU coaches were allowed to select the gametime for this road game they face at Death Valley, do you think they'd go with early afternoon or late afternoon/night? Obviously this is a silly hypothetical, but I bet know which one they'd pick. And we'd be packing our sunblock the Friday before the game. What do you think?

Mickey, are we in for more of this with the new SEC/ESPN contract? Will there be less TV games? How will that impact recruiting? When I look at the games for that weekend, Miami/VT is the only one that is slotted well. GT/UNC deserves a little run as it is two ranked teams...I'm surprised that is the Raycom game. Is it time to get a bigger computer screen to watch a string of 360 games?

Any chance the Clemson/
TCU game will be picked up if we have a strong win over BC? Who might get a shot at picking it up?

The 1200 or 1:00 PM games have a less chance of rain... Go Tigers

It's good to point out that no one starting time will please everyone. I personally like 3:30 the best since you get the best of both worlds between day & night games, and many of us can still drive home at a decent hour.

Of greater concern would be the banishment to obscure internet channels at odd times. This could impact recruiting terribly.

The Tigers need to take care of business and keep getting better. Winning can do a lot towards getting better TV exposure.

The not using the lights is and should not be an issue. They leave them on all night long on Friday night.

Razz -

The administration does not like Thursday games so they made an agreement with the ACC that we'd play a Thursday night game every year, but it would always be on the road. At least that is what I'm told.

It seems that 5 o'clock is the starting time we are looking for..just throwing that out there.

3:30 is the best time, period. Best of all worlds, for everybody, except coaches. Remember the player's families have to travel to the games, too. It was selfish of TB to want noon games so he had more time afterwards for whatever it was he did. He was paid the big bucks for the sacrifice. 3:30 gets more butts in the seats, and I travel 4 hrs each way to the games, and I, too will be there no matter what time it starts, but 3:30 is best of all worlds.
