Friday's E-Mail Bag

Friday E-Mail Bag
On Fridays we publish your e-mails and answer your questions. If you have a comment or question you can submit it to mickeyplyler@hotmail.com.

Mickey,

What changes will take place to our RB's under Andre Powell?

Drew

Drew,
We had coach Powell on the morning show on Thursday. That was the first time I had ever spoken with him. He said he was going to sit down with James and C.J. the moment after he pulled into the parking lot at the McFadden building. He said he was looking forward to working with both of them but I do not expect any kind of change to occur because of his hiring. Any offensive scheme change will occur from the desk of the offensive coordinator.

Mickey,
Unlike some I think this is a good hire. He has worked with some darn good backs and will fit in well. How good of a recruiter is he and what do you think of him coming to Tigertown? He sure has big shoes to fill that is for sure.

Steve

Steve,
I don't know him personally yet. I have talked to a few people that have known him and he gets nice reviews. Time will tell if this is a good hire. I think he has been a decent recruiter in the past but don't enough about that. You are correct when you complimented Burton.

Mickey,
I sent an email to you last week regarding recruiting and some news and didn't see anything this past week from you and there was no mention of any recruiting in your Friday email column.
What is happening and why have you been so silent this year? New approach?
Gerald

Gerald,
First, the industry has changed. Kids are committing so much earlier. Clemson is really waiting on two kids right now. I think they are in good shape with both Jones and Brown but a lot can happen between now and Wednesday. We did talk about the five commitments they got two weeks ago but the news has been scarce.

Whenever you get so many early commitments then it is hard to create a ton of news in January when you are waiting on two players.

Mickey,

This is in regards to the Virginia and Clemson basketball game.
I have to vent, but before I do, let me start with
1. I am a Clemson Basketball and Coach Purnell fan
2. 14-0 and 8-8 were the goals that I wished for this team.
3. Clemson is the most overachieving team in the NCAAs

With that said.. I am waiting to hear the Coach step up and take 100% of the responsibility for the Virginia loss. That was the most pathetic display of Game Management that Coach Purnell probably has ever had.

Why did Coach Purnell...
1. not go hard after Singletary in the last 6 minutes to get that fifth foul?
2. allow Clemson to get cocky when there was still 5 minutes left in the game?

Clemson cannot afford to get comfortable or lazy at end of games. They are not good enough. Clemson must attack, attack, attack when they have double digit leads with 5 minutes to go. Clemson can get cocky when time gets to under two minutes and they are up by 10 or more.

Free throws will average out. Clemson shoots a poor average for a season. For every game like Duke (10 of 11) there will be other games ... 5 of 11, 6 of 13, and so on.

Our Coach should have never allowed this game to have the situation where free throw shooting mattered. He and his coaches should have recognized that Clemson needed to attack the basket. They stopped playing their basketball with 6 minutes to go in the game.

This game was a waste. At the ACC halfway point 4-4 is great for Clemson, but when will we ask from our coaches and teams to succeed when the time is ripe? Sure 4-4 is good based on preseason goals... but Clemson had a game, an opportunity, a chance to do better and failed.

Football coaches failed in the Maryland game.
Basketball coaches failed in the Virginia game.

Football 7-1 start to an 8-5 finish.
Clemson Basketball 4-4 start to what kind of finish?
We'll see.

Thanks
Stuart

Stuart,
I agree with some of your points but not the cocky thing. The fact is UVA played great down the stretch and hit some incredible threes. I agreed with the decision to shorten the game because UVA was hot. I agree that coaches lost the Maryland football game. I also agree that this game was devastating but I think they can rebound.

Comments:

What do you make of Spence turning down the Raiders (and Alabama and Minnesota)? The fact that he, Dabo Swinney, and Ron West turned down more lucrative offers to come back and coach at Clemson has got to be a good sign. I think the pulse of the Clemson Nation as a whole is pretty evident, but I would bet the pulse inside the football program is a lot better than most think. Maybe that could be a blog topic???
