Mickey,
In looking over the depth chart for next year, I wonder why we haven't gone hard after a top flight JC linebacker. It looks like someone could come in and claim a starting spot pretty easy and I'd be surprised if there was not someone in the JC ranks better than a rookie. I know we typically don't take JC types, but we desperately need LB help next year or the defense will have the same issues we do today. Who do you see as starters next year?
John
John,
You should be concerned about the linebackers again next year. Clemson has had a difficult time recruiting linebackers in recent years. Part of the reason was the Tigers played a nickel package so much under Vic Koenning. They called Billie and McDaniel SAM linebackers but they were safeties or nickel backs. Other schools used this against Clemson in recruiting. Steele wants bigger linebackers but it was a bad year in the recruiting territories for the position. I don’t think JUCO is the way to go in most cases though. In many cases the JUCO players don’t pan out. Next year I see all three positions opened up for competition. I would think some combination of Tig Willard, Corrico Hawkins, Brandon Maye, Quandon Christian and Scotty Cooper would be the starters. Spencer Shuey should get a look and playing time at the MLB. I don’t think Rollins has much of a chance at this point. I would also look for someone to move to the position. Maybe they could move Kourtnei Brown there like they did with Alexander this season.
Mickey,
Let me start by saying I believe in free speech, but it doesn’t mean that TigerNet or any other site owes you a place to spout. I believe that TDP and Barker could do a better job overall. I believe that our coaches are sometimes wrong and players perform poorly at times. I also recognize that Tiger Net is a business enterprise trying to make a buck. No problem. However, if the people behind TigerNet – I assume you Mickey are simply a content provider – truly care about the Clemson Tigers (pick your sport or department), it sure would be nice to see “Tiger Board” turned off and taken off the site completely. TigerNet has become a Clemson site on its best days and a Clemson haters site – it seems – on other days. It needs to be cleaned up for Clemson’s sake. Is anyone at TigerNet up for this challenge? Do they care? Keep the left-hand side of the page, but cut out the cancerous growth over on the right.
As I’ve said before, I do not post on this site or any other, but I do occasionally scan the comments of the original postings on Tiger Board seeking a useful informative nugget. I strongly share the belief with others, that too much of what is posted is over-the-top negative garbage from spineless “so called” fans that don’t have a real life. Tiger Illustrated had this blog, addressing how this rampant negative fervor has and will hurt Clemson football. I for one believe it. Yes, other schools have bored whacked-out fans too spewing similar venom on their version of T-Net or whatever, but could they possibly do it more or worse? I don’t think so. Moreover, as fans why wouldn’t we want to be better than other schools and exhibit more class?
Good apples always have to pay the price, so I feel bad for those decent posters. I’m not talking about the always positive people, but for the half-way intelligent folks who fairly and respectfully share their fondness and their gripes, for they don’t deserve to lose what should be an outlet for all. Mickey, please forward this message to the folks in charge, asking they consider the potentially tough options needed to bring some order. A small step in the right direction: don’t allow one to simply click and read the original post, but make it more cumbersome by requiring a login, etc. if they really want to partake. That should shield at least a few folks (hopefully players and recruits) from the hatred, and put the whacko’s one step closer to solitary confinement.
Peace.
Bobby
Bobby,
I agree with most of your comments. I do think that most rational people understand that internet message boards are not a representation of the fan base for any team. This is not a Clemson issue though. This happens everywhere. I go to a lot of websites for content for my radio show and I can tell you this happens at almost every college and pro site. We know about it in our market but it happens everywhere. The only thing I would change is to take the anonymity out of it. I think some of the clowns out there would be a lot less brave or brash. If people had to put their real names, e-mail addresses, phone numbers and physical addresses then it might deter some of the garbage. I think everyone is entitled to their opinion and I enjoy reading some opinions but so often the clowns take away from good content with their childish remarks or attempts at humor.
Mickey,
Why didn’t Clemson go to one deep safety and put 8 men in the box and blitz the heck out of Ga Tech? What I saw was the Ends pinching in on the Dive back leaving one LB and one CB (who was frequently blocked) to handle the QB and TB wide. I thought that the end should hit the QB every play, leave the dive man to the DTs and Mike LB with SS support and blitz the heck out of them every play, making them throw it. With the SS up, Clemson could have outnumbered them at the point of attack.
As it was, the Tigers decided to die 5 yards at a time, with a defense that was waiting down field for the RBs to come to them. Very frustrating. By the second half, Tech new that they could not be stopped by that defensive set up.
George
George,
I think you make valid points. I think the way to stop any offense is to get off of blocks so technique was just as big of a problem as scheme. Also, I think you have to change your defenses often because if you become predictable then the offense can change its blocking scheme. I have talked to a few coaches who are not at Clemson but what they saw was what you explained but only on one side of the field. The other side they played a different scheme. I do think they should have walked another player up in the box and should have played more of an odd man front to take away some of the midline option. In the end, nothing Clemson did worked and I think they have to re-evaluate the plan for next season. Also, personnel has something to do with it and Clemson’s linebackers must improve in 2010.
Mickey
I just want you to know I appreciate reading your comments...I like your insight. I think football politics have been exposed like never before this season. I really believe the officiating is in a state of turmoil with very little oversight. I also believe bowl games need to be exposed for what they are--a business that is for profit.
I am appalled that the Heisman voters in our on state did not support one of our own. I agree CJ should not win the award because of the totality of the factors that go into the decision making. However, it is time for the voters to step forward and be held accountable for their votes. Why are the voters for these awards not required to explain their votes publicly, and be held accountable to criticism? Same goes for officiating. Why is there no oversight anymore? Why can officials not be blackballed? Why is there no closer inspection of their bias? I believe the same thing may be happening in college ball that has been exposed in NBA corruption. Why is it not checked into besides some "head of officials in every league" that reviews film sent it. Why can coaches not discuss and criticize officials?
It is a shame that politics and money drive a sport where emotions are a large part of the game. I think this season has left a sour view of the sport in general.
Thanks for listening to my rant. If you have any idea as to how we can hold voters and officials feet to the fire please inform us. The sport has become big business now and there needs to be accountability.
I hope your family has a great Holiday season and thanks for all your hard work and dedication.
Sincerely
Rick
Rick,
Please feel free to rant anytime. I don’t blame you for feeling frustrated because a lot of us are as well. There is some accountability in officiating but more is needed. It seems like politics of sports becomes more of an issue when my team does not benefit. Amazing, huh? Lets you and I throw in our resumes for college football czar and fix this mess.
Mickey,
I check /read Tigernet several times a week. I am a third generation Clemson grad and have attended football games since 1976 when I was 7 yrs old. I remember Coach Pell, I went to the Orange Bowl in 1982, I suffered through the Hatfield/West years... tolerated the Tommy Bowden years and finally have the greatest hope for our football team in many years!
I was wondering if you could address in your blog the good points about this year. It is Dabo's first year as a coach with his coaching staff... getting us to the championship game was huge.. who would have guessed that a year ago? This team has a ton to build on and I think a lot of people are not focused on that yet. I heard Dabo on ESPN Sunday night after the bowl announcements.. he sounded so down and out... I know he is heartbroken, but he has to realize he did in 1 year what Tommy could not do in 10.
Questions-
1- Who at Clemson is not "politicing" the way we need to be ? Screwed by the bowls, Cj's missed invite. Continued problems with Rod Cherry, the list goes on and on.
2- Why should Clemson stay in the ACC and not consider a move to the SEC? pro's con's. ( everyone always snubs the idea for the sake of other sports.. although that maybe a factor, we all know clemson has more in coming with SEC schools than ACC schools.)
3- What coaching changes will happen in the off season? I would assume someone on the defensive side is not coaching the guys on assignments and good ole fashion field tackling!
Good job on the blog... I really enjoy your opinions and discussions.
Philip
Philip,
Thanks for the e-mail. After the season is over I want to write a blog about this team and what it accomplished. To answer your questions:
1. I think they have politicked in the past some and it has worked. To be blatantly honest though I think the athletic department has lost something in the leadership and passion. A lot of us don’t see passionate leadership there anymore.
2. Clemson has not been invited to the SEC but the current administration could not do “business” like an SEC school. Sports are more important at SEC schools. Our people can say they are not because it makes them look bad but the actions speak for themselves. Look at the money the SEC makes and spends. They go out of their way to make it work at these schools but our people create adversarial relationships often. They support their coaches in most cases and that certainly does not happen here.
3. I think Clemson needs to look to improve in every aspect of its football program. Talent, recruiting, player development, coaching, conditioning, etc.
Mickey,
Like you said, that was a BIG deal. We drove down Friday and really enjoyed the experience down there. That being said, I was thoroughly disappointed in the Tigers. This game against GA Tech was the icing on the cake of disappointment.
Let me be clear that I am proud that the Tigers represented the Atlantic and I am proud at how they rebounded. When the season started, I expected about a 7 and 5 season. So why am I disappointed? Well I am disappointed because expectations, like everything else, change depending on circumstances.
There were so many unknowns in the beginning that I didn't expect a lot. I expected to finish around 3rd in the Atlantic but expected to beat South Carolina.
Well, the circumstances of the Atlantic division changed those expectations. As the season moved along, we all could see just how bad most of the Atlantic appeared to be. So after beating Wake in the fashion that we did, I expected to finish at least tied for the Atlantic Division.
As the winning streak continued, my expectations evolved to actually winning the ACC Championship. Why? Because our offense had improved dramatically and our defense is loaded with "talent".
Then Virginia rolls in...and our defense looks terrible. I was actually disappointed in that performance defensively, but I chalked that up to having already wrapped up the Atlantic.
Then...we got hammered by South Carolina and, again, our defense looked atrocious...
So going into the ACC Championship Game, I still expected to win, but I was seriously worried about our defense...and now it was justified to be worried. As we look back on the season now, WHAT HAPPENED TO OUR DEFENSE?? Granted, GA Tech played very well against everyone this season, but our defense looked pitiful the last 3 or 4 games, and couldn't stop the zone read all year.
Here's what happens to fans, in my opinion, as things like this progress. Expectations change, and increase, but rarely decrease. The disappointment mounts but the expectations rarely go down. When your team exceeds expectations early, only to finish as originally expected, we wind up disappointed.
As we now Re-Evaluate the season, and thus the coaches, I give the following grade based on "expectations" vs performance:
Dabo: (B +). Dabo did very well and was only really "out-coached" in a few games. He motivated as well as we've seen, but couldn't quite get the troops rallied in the end. Good season, better than expected
Napier: (A -). Napier started sluggish, I believe trying to do too much. He finished amazingly and called some good games. His improvement seemed phenomenal. Rough start, great finish.
Steele: (C). Steele started great, finished terrible. After BC, our defense looked like world beaters and could replace the entire Detroit Lions defense and be more successful. This unit finished aweful, allowing everyone to rush all over us. The most overall talent resides on this side of the ball and they didn't perform as expected. Great start, bad finish fosters that "what have you done for me lately mentality".
I'll finish by saying that CJ is the greatest player I have seen in person. No doubt he should at least get invited to NY, but I doubt he'll get the recognition. I'll be watching the Music City Bowl from my couch in hopes that CJ shows out again.
Thanks,
Billy
Billy,
I think you made some terrific points about the season and expectations. You are also right about watching a season and its ebbs and flows. Momentum and confidence are fascinating aspects of a season especially one as long as the college football season has become. Good e-mail.
Mickey,
Why does Clemson not reject the bowl bid and stay home this year? You would have to pay me money to go watch that game rather than for me to pay money to go watch it. This is a lose-lose situation for Clemson? The players will not be motivated to play in this game, and it will be another humiliating loss to an SEC team? Are we not allowed to turn down bowl bids?
David
David,
I think competitive people want to compete and never turn down an opportunity to compete. I also would not wait on any checks from anyone paying you to go to any football game anytime soon. I think the players will be motivated and look for a different outcome than you.

Dear Bobby,
LOL!!! Sorry you got your feelings hurt by the Tiger Board. Crump and Bmiest do a good job keeping the site clean and mostly friendly. The fact is... The folks you are talking about would just go post somewhere else if not on Tnet. So, people would read their posts anyway. You need to chill out! People have opinions and should be free to express them. Just because someone does not agree with you doesn't mean they are not a Clemson fan or that they are a Clemson hater. Again, Im sorry you got owned by someone on the Tiger Board or that you don't respect other's opinions. Maybe you and Tebow can find somewhere to cry together...

I totally disagree with you Mickey, the players are let down about going to the hotel bowl. Just like in 2006 they didnt show up and got spanked by a bad UK team. Expect more of the same this year, another embarrassing loss for clemson on national tv to the "mighty SEC" BLAH!

Mickey,
There has been talk recently of TDP wanting a Roof over Death Valley... Do you support this? Would you donate to this cause?
Thanks,

Bobby, thanks for the laugh...and for the record the most embarrassing part of this message board fiasco is that Chris Ard actually made a post crying about how message board fans are hurting recruiting.
The fans do their part by donating millions of dollars, filling out home games, and having the best road/bowl attendance among all ACC schools. Recruiting is sucking because our national rep continues to be that we always fall short and our coaches aren't getting it done on the recruiting trail...when our top OT prospect says he hasn't heard from Clemson in weeks, this is the fans' fault?

I too have a bad feeling that an unmotivated Clemson team will lose to an inferior, but motivated, UK team that will be playing a lot closer to home.
