Mickey,
Good job on the Blog. Now that Kyle Parker has signed, what are the possibilities for him moving forward, especially in regards to him playing football at Clemson beyond this season? If he plays baseball in the spring for Colorado, then is it safe to say he could not participate in Spring Practice? Also, would his obligation to minor league baseball end in time for him to come back in time for Fall camp? Seems to me there would be too much overlap for him to play both minor league baseball and college football, and that if he continues to play football after this year that it would have to be at the professional level. That might actually be more feasible from a scheduling perspective than college ball because he would not also have to attend classes, but it really depends on when the minor league season ends.
Thankyou in advance for your insight on this subject. Also, I continue to keep you, Ryan, and your family in my prayers.
Tigerfan
Tigerfan,
Thanks for the prayers for Ryan. He is doing great. He turned 19 this week and starts his senior year next week but girls and Clemson football are on his mind right now.
Parker said this week that he is 99% sure this will be his last season of Clemson football. He cannot play Clemson baseball because of the contract and there is only a slight chance he could play football here again. There is a chance he could enter the NFL draft in April because he would have completed his third year of football this fall. The only way he could play football again here at Clemson in 2011 is through a term waiver. Parker would be eligible to apply for this special waiver and would have a chance to receive it due to the fact that he has done well in school and would be over 60% of the way towards his degree. The waiver is not a sure thing however and at this point I would expect Kyle to treat this season like his senior season.
Mickey,
I recently read the following quote from Dabo:
"Lot of red zone, lot of green zone emphasis today, skel and team pass so I thought we got good work on both sides."
Please tell me where the "green zone" is and what "skel" is.
Red
Red,
I think Dabo named the Red zone after you. Just kidding. The Red Zone and the Green Zone refer to the plays that are run from your own one-yard line out to your own 20-yard line and the plays you run from your opponents 20-yard line on in to the end zone. These are crucial areas. The difference in so many games is the efficiency of getting touchdowns instead of field goals from inside the opponents 20-yard line offensively and the defenses ability to hold the opponent to three instead of seven. Also a key part of the game is whether the defense can hold the offense once they have been pinned inside their own 20-yard line.
Skel is short for skeleton. Instead of the offense and defense going 11 on 11 it is when they go seven on seven. The offense runs plays using the quarterback, center and five skill position players. The personnel can be any combination of the skill players you will see on the field.
In Skel the defense uses a combination of seven defenders made up of linebackers and defensive backs.
Basically skel is a passing drill where the offense runs pass plays against the defense without any linemen involved.

Love the show, but find it comical the defending of Clemson's schedule. Granted FL & AL do schedule 3 patsies, but their conference schedule also has perennial 9 win GA and/or LSU, AR, TN (who used to be a 10 win team), and sometimes each other.
You stated Maryland is not a breather game because they keep beating us. Maryland won 2 games last year and Clemson was the only D1 school. That is an insult to Clemson football to give them credit as a valid opponent. No school should beat Clemson who can not beat another D1 school on their schedule. What would Wake's record be in the SEC or Big 10? Do you think they would really ever contend? The ACC does have several teams ranked pre-season and if they are there at the end of the year, you can say that. Clemson was pre-season #9 in the country and finished the year unranked after an unranked AL destroyed us before going undefeated. Preseason rankings are a terrible measure for schools that have no tradition of being strong...aka UNC. The ACC has been severely weak the last several years and has proven NOTHING to the college football world. Before claiming the ACC is so strong, the ACC needs to actually beat someone respectable. Clemson beat KY in the bowl. What are the tie in standings for that bowl? ACC #2 played SEC #7? Nothing to be proud of when ACC #2 would have lost to SEC #2 by 30.
Until the ACC earns respect....The ACC should get no respect.
Mark
Mark,
You are now changing the argument. I am not arguing that Clemson should not have been better in recent years. I agree with that argument. Also I am not argueing for the ACC. It too needs to improve. But your original argument was the schedule. The fact is that this is one of the toughest schedules in school history. That is fact. You can't argue with facts. You are using opinions which can be argued. But the fact is that rarely has Clemson faced a schedule that has this many returning bowl teams or this many teams ranked in the pre-season top 25. The preseason top is 25 is the only way we can use facts at this point. It may be your opinion that the poll is wrong or an individual team may nit be that good but that is an opinion. The poll is based upon opinions but that is all we have right noiw. Now you have switched your argument to the ACC strength which is a completely different argument and you are basing it on opinions and not facts.

i love beating SC. But I've never gotten into the whole "schedule strength" argument because of this:
I don't have time to find the facts and stats on this perception, but I'd say that the SEC's #1 through #5 teams are better than our ACC's #1 through #5 teams, on just about any stat sheet on any given Saturday. Unfortunately, that would mean our dominance over SCAR means relatively nothing outside the realm of rivalry pride. Aren't they typically 5th-7th in conference while we're 2-4th? We'd have more to brag about if they could finish higher in the SEC and THEN beat them like a rented mule each year. Until then, I'll avoid the strength of schedule argument.

Would any fan (Florida, Clemson, et al) rather play cupcakes instead of respectable teams? If I were king, I'd decree that all Big Six teams have to play at least 2 non-con Bix Six teams, and that strength of schedule be a primary factor in bowl berths.
The problem seems to stem from reporters & coaches ranking teams highly based on the number of wins rather than the quality of their wins. A classic example is that the AP & UPI awarded a national championship to an undefeated BYU in 1984, even though BYU didn't beat any team that finished ranked, and only beat one bowl team (Air Force) during the regular season. BYU's toughest game was beating (6-5) Michigan in the Holiday Bowl. Poor Washington finished #2 that year despite going 11-1, losing only at USC (who finished #10) and despite playing 4 bowl teams (3 of whom finished ranked)… and beating Michigan in the big house. The ranking system is just crazy and encourages cupcake crushings.

We have two absolute gimmes, PC and NTS. That means That means we just have to go 5 & 5 against the rest of the schedule to have a winning season. Some of the games are tough. Most aren't.

knowitall... I don't know about you but I am completely done with mediocrity and 7-6 seasons, this should no longer be the mind set of clemson athletics. period.

cutigr62... I'm with you. I see a 7-5 or 8-4 season. Hope I'm wrong. Both records would be huge disappointments. We should expect to be 10 and 2 with our schedule most years.

With out a play off system, you can not say that the BCS ranking system is'nt the best way we can deside who goes to the title game. I would much rather see a play off. But i also think we are still a long way away from a play off. I also do believe that the last few years, we did have a true National Championship winner. I just don't think there was a better team than LSU TIGERS, FLA.GATORS, or ALABAMA CRIMSON TIDE in the past few years !!!!
