Fallout from TO's Decision

What Does TO’s Departure Mean?
I was surprised to hear the news of Terrence Oglesby leaving the Clemson. Since the news came out I have talked to a few basketball people to get a feel for their reaction. Like many Clemson fans, their reaction was mixed.

Clemson will miss:
*Oglesby’s three point shooting. He had the ability to help the Tigers get on some terrific offensive runs. His threes could cut an eight point deficit into a lead in the matter of three trips down court. His threes could take a small lead and turn it into a working margin or a blowout in a matter of minutes.

*Oglesby’s range. He was within his shooting range when he stepped off of the bus. Defenses had to pay him respect due to his phenomenal range.

*Oglesby’s ability to stretch the defense. Trevor Booker, James Mays and other Clemson post players have benefitted the last two seasons because teams could not collapse on the big men when Oglesby was on the perimeter.

*Oglesby’s passing. The point guard the last two seasons does not enter the basketball to the post very often or very well. Oglesby was one of the best at entering the ball on the low block.

*Oglesby’s court vision. Few players saw the entire floor like Oglesby. Defenses had to play attention to his ability to find an open teammate.

*Oglesby’s work ethic. Few Tigers worked as hard at their game as Oglesby. He was a gym rat that loved to work on his game at all hours of the day.

*Oglesby’s free throw shooting. Over the past two seasons no one has been more dependable from the charity stripe. He was almost auto automatic. When a technical foul or at the end of the game, there was no doubt who we wanted at the line.

Clemson will not miss:
*Oglesby’s lack of athleticism. Few times over the past season has Oglesby not been an inferior athlete compared to the opponent’s two guard.

*Oglesby’s defense. Oliver Purnell built this program on defense and this was always an issue with Oglesby. The opponent’s shooting guard has had some huge nights when guarded by Oglesby.

*Oglesby’s shot selection. Too often he took the wrong shot at the wrong time. I felt many times his bad shot selection killed momentum and hurt team chemistry.

*Oglesby’s turnovers. At times last season the offense was hurt by his high numbers in the turnover department.

*Oglesby’s sulking. Missed shots, turnovers or a bad call could often times get him in a funk. Oglesby would get down on himself too often and sometimes it was a detriment to the team.

Who Gets More Minutes?
*Tanner Smith is the obvious choice right out of the block. Smith can play two or three but he is more of a defensive oriented play that is smart enough to help with the style the staff wants to play. I could see Smith playing more at both positions.

*Donte Hill will have to adjust to the college game and that is always a factor. Reportedly he is athletic enough to handle the minutes but can he make the quick adjustment? He will have one less veteran ahead of him when camp starts.

*Andre Young might be the top outside threat now. I can see the staff playing both Demontez Stitt and Young in the game at the same time.

*Milton Jennings will see more time especially if he is ready and Smith gets minutes at the two guard. The small forward spot will have more opportunities because some of those minutes will go to normal three guards playing the two spot.

*Clemson could go really big and play David Potter at the two if they get in a jam with injuries or foul trouble.

What Will His Teammates Think?
It is no secret that last year’s team had chemistry issues. I am not sure who is to blame for it and am not placing blame on Oglesby. I do think that this kind of adversity sometimes brings a team closer. I expect team chemistry to improve following this development.

Why would Oglesby leave after only two seasons at Clemson?
This question has a couple of answers. First, Clemson’s staff was going back to the style of play they knew best. Purnell already said that only Trevor Booker’s position was safe, so Oglesby was going to have to fight for playing time. The move to a more of a full court and defensive oriented team was a contrast to what Oglesby does best. He is a half court, spot shooter who did not excel in the pressure defensive system. So he fits more into a European style than he was going to in Clemson’s style of 2009-2010.

Also, Oglesby is going to have opportunities in Europe. His mom was born in Europe and his status is attractive to some professional teams there. Word is that there will be a market for his services.

Summary
In the end I will miss Oglesby. He was terrific in the community and was especially kind to my son Ryan. Purnell’s style won games before Oglesby though and I am looking forward to the old style again as well. I think Oglesby’s pluses outweighed his negatives but it will be interesting to see how the 2009-10 team responds on both ends of the floor.

Comments:

As Clemson's opponents got better during the season(ACC), TO could hardly get a shot off. He made 3 straight terrible passes to the inside against Florida State which greatly helped us lose that home game. NBA?- HA!

Good points.
I think that OP's desire to focus more on defense and playing time were big factors in TO's decision. He would have been a great 6th man but I don't think thats a role he's willing to embrace.
Nothing excites a crowd more than a monster dunk or a 3-point shooter getting hot.
Tiger Nation certainly wishes him the best.

I wish he was coming back, but it is not the end of the world. Good luck, TO.

If OP was leaving, I would be devastated. With TO leaving, I am sad but thankful that he will be replaced quickly. Good luck to him.
Time will tell if this was a mistake for him. I know that the
Tigers will survive this

At a program like Clemson, there are two main factors to competing with the big boys in the ACC: first, what kind of contributions can you get out of your freshman class? Are they able to impact ACC games in their first season? We need Jennings & Hill to impact immediately. Second, how much improvement can the existing players achieve during the off-season? We need Smith, Young & Potter to play at another level in 2009-10. They need to get beyond being "role palyers". If both of these factors work out well for Clemson basketball, we won't miss TO. We have the players - the question is: can they play at the highest level during ACC games? I have faith in Purnell and his staff to make this happen.

CLEMS75, there isn't a single point about him going to the NBA, idiot.

You wonder why he hardly got a shot off? It's because defenses had to spread more to cover him; therefore, opening up Booker down low. So yes, he may not be draining a 3, but he's opening up the court for the others. So your post in an attempt to insult T.O. was a true testament to how much of an impact he was to our team. Moron.

Soccer - not to speak for CLEMS75 but I think TO actually stated his dream is to play in the NBA. He is obviously not at that level yet, so he's going to Europe to get paid and try to develop his game.
TO's value at drawing defenders out will be missed but to Mickey's point, whenever he doesnt get his shots he beings to force them and when they're not falling his poor attitude was likely infectious.
Parts of his game will certainly be missed but he is replaceable.

Are the first 3 pros not the same thing said differently? How can his passing and court vision(also similar) be a plus when you admit that his turnovers killed us? In the end, he was a selfish player who left rather than give up his starting spot and the team will be better off without him.

I'm not a big basketball fan so I'm speaking from a position of ignorance (more than usual) but... I loved to see him sink those 3's when he was hot. But often it seemed that he was not hot and he was too quick to shoot (and miss) too many shots from outside the arc-- sometimes from too far outside the arc. (Maybe this is just restating Mickey's 3rd negative.) Overall, I think the team played better with him than without him (like when he got ejected). He probably would have improved on some of the listed negatives and been a great asset. But it's not like losing Booker.

I don't think TO has much chance of making the NBA (as he and his father stated about making this decision). So this could be a great move for him since it gives him a chance to live abroad, date European girls, and make a living playing the sport that he loves. If you’re going to live in a socialist country either way, you might as well go to Europe. Best of luck to him!

TO never learned to create his own shot. Many thought he could develop that between freshman and soph. year, but it did not happen. It's laughable to think he can play professionally.

succerkrzy, Are you a graduate of Clemson? I am. TO was never hard to cover. Booker was very frustrated by season's end because teams were collapsing inside and not fearing our perimeter game. I am always pulling for any former Clemson player to play in the NBA

Did his great passing and court vision allow him to create more assists than turnovers? You would think that Mickey would have done A LITTLE research with the extra day. Maybe he should have talked to "one more basketball mind" before submitting a list that was both repetitive and contradicting. Really, if you turn it over more than you get an assist, is passing a strength?

TO's departure helps T Booker tremendously. I think this will open up the floor for him offensively inside and outside. Now the offense can always run through him. Inside out, outside in (shot selection!). Draft status looks better already! As far as the move for the team goes..."ATHLETIC" TIGER DEFENSE! DEFENSE! DEFENSE! Good move for TO, great move for CU!!
