Dabo's Dual Roles
Dabo’s Dual Roles
It’s Tuesday and I was hoping to shake the sting of losing to a bad Maryland team but no such luck. I can’t shake this feeling.
Maryland is still an awful football team and Clemson still lost to the Terps Saturday. Until I see otherwise, this offense still is a major concern. Maryland is still one of the worst defenses in the ACC.
I guess it does little good to sit around and mope about that game so I was sitting here trying to think of a way to write a blog that might provide some insight and some positive contribution.
Because none of us are qualified to analyze every detail of the program, it becomes difficult. I am a sports talk show host, a fan and a writer of a daily blog. I am not trained to break down the assignments of each offensive linemen. I do not have access to the techniques taught to the running backs. I do not get to see the wide receivers in their daily practice drills. None of us do.
However, I can see five false starts on offense against Maryland. I do see multiple drops each game by the wide receiver corps. I do see game after game of missed tackles. I can tell when a field goal travels between the uprights.
The players jumped off sides, dropped balls and missed tackles and field goals but is it the players fault of the coaches?
The other thing I can do without formal training is form ideas or opinions about what I would like to see from a program. I love Dabo and think he is a breath of fresh air. I am glad he is the head coach here but I fundamentally disagree with a couple of things he has done so far.
First, I don’t think a head coach needs to be involved in the play calling or signaling in of plays. That goes for Dabo, Urban Meyer, Mack Brown, Nick Saban and any other head coach.
In my opinion, the head coach has too much going on throughout the week and the game to be worried about individual plays. I think the head coach needs to manage the game not the individual plays. The offensive staff meets, watches film and develops a game plan throughout the week. The head coach has to meet with the media, meet with the support staff, meet with the trainer, meet with the seniors and others throughout the week. He does not have time micromanage the program. The head coach should hire coordinators and let them call the plays.
Co-coordinators don’t work either. I have watched a bunch of programs through the years fail partly because of co-coordinators. In essence Clemson has co-coordinators on offense with Billy Napier and Dabo both involved in play calling. To me this is an example of too many cooks in the kitchen. With co-coordinators accountability is hard to come by. How are we to know who is responsible when two guys are calling plays?
Clemson’s offensive problems are multiple. Fans don’t want to hear it but they are young at wide receiver, young on the offensive line and young at quarterback. The staff is inexperienced at wide receiver, quarterback and offensive coordinator. The head coach is inexperienced as well. To me that is a lot of youth and inexperience on one side of the football.
The real answer in play calling is execution. Every play works if properly blocked and executed. There would be no issue with Dabo and Napier sharing duties if the offensive line was able to block more effectively. But co-coordinators at least provide us with a sense of accountability.
Another issue is identity. We are five games into this season and 12 games into Dabo’s tenure and I still am not sure what the offensive identity is. To me the best gameplan I saw in those 12 games was the South Carolina game last year where Chad Diehl was the full back in a package that featured a lot of the I-formation. Diehl punished South Carolina and the Tigers pounded the football right at South Carolina. Unfortunately, we have not seen a lot of Diehl or the I-formation since.
Some have suggested Dabo and Napier don’t see eye to eye on the direction of the offense. I think Dabo wants to spread the field but Napier wants to run the I-formation. If that is the case then there is a problem.
I think Dabo needs to decide if he is the head coach or the offensive coordinator. I also think he needs to decide if Clemson is a spread team or an I-formation team. Who are we on offense? Who is in charge of the offense? The offense is broken and someone needs to fix it soon.
Also I think the next time there is an opening on the offensive side of the ball, I think Dabo needs to add experience. In the meantime, let the offensive coordinator run the show on offense and the defensive coordinator run the show defense. The head coach needs to be able to manage the game.
I think Dabo has the makings to develop into a terrific head coach but he has to be willing to recognize some of these issues. I criticized Mark Richt at Georgia when he was calling the plays as the head coach. Richt realized it is too difficult to do and has turned the play calling over to Mike Bobo.
Speaking of Georgia, Vince Dooley was one of the last head coaches that was also the athletic director at his school at the same time. I could not imagine doing both jobs today. I think we will see the same thing when it comes to head coaches and play calling.
I could be wrong and don’t claim to have all of the answers. However, my gut tells me that if Clemson wants to be successful on offense in the future then co-coordinator roles have to change.

Urban Meyer is involved in play calling (offense). As is Saban (defense). And so is Pete C over there at the real USC (defense).
I'm not sure those programs are the same without their in-game input.

Justwannaread,
Those teams are ultra talented. They are more talented than their opponent probably 95% of the time. Those coaches were also coordinators before they were head coaches. Saban and Carroll have NFL experience. I am still against it and think they would be even better if their head coaches did not get involved. Just my thoughts.

Basically Dabo says there still are execution errors. Kind of like dumping it off on the players. But as coaches its their job to teach the proper execution and find a way to drill them on it so they learn.

Justwannaread, those three guys also spent years and years and years as coordinators. They know their side of the ball better than anybody. Dabo doesnt know squat. Hasnt spent one single year as a coordinator. So now he's trying to learn to be a coordinator AND a head coach at the same time?? He cant handle it.

Do we have any idea how much (if at all) Dabo is overriding Napier on play calling?

When are you going to realize that the SoCar game was a joke? You keep referencing Diehl from that game like he was some sort of X-Men character! He hit a bunch of quitters who had given up before the game was even played. Maybe the reason you have'nt seen it since is because he does'nt play that way vs REAL teams like Bama, Nebraska or TCU. Did you watch the bowl game? One game removed from a God-like performance vs SC, he gets crushed by SEVERAL Huskers. I could have drawn up a gameplan to beat Carolina last year! Raining, no QBs, team quit before kickoff. All we had to do was show up!All we had to do! Quit making it sound like great strategy or some herculean performance.

Two things: First, every play works if it is executed properly, but some plays are easier to execute than others, hence the need for good play-calling. If players are put in a position where it is difficult to succed, then it should not surprise people when they do not.
Second, I agree it is hard for the head coach to also call the plays, but if the plays that are being called are not working, then you can't blame Dabo if he wants to be more involved. If BN was not getting the job done and Dabo did nothing, then the fans would criticize him for being too hands-off.
At this point, I would bet there will be some openings for new coordinators on the offensive side of the ball when the season is over.

The blog may or may not be good. I'm still trying to understand what language the first sentence is written in.

I don't think the feeling to Maryland will be going anywhere soon!

Guys - I was just making a point that some VERY successful coaches have heavy hands into their teams playcalling on one side of the ball or the other. Its not my fault that Clemson hired a WR coach to direct its team - Dabo has every right, and I say obligation, to do as much as he can to help the team achieve its goals. If he believes that his OC needs his help in games and in setting gameplans and scripts, then I have no problem with him doing it.
If he/they can't achieve goals doing that, then someone else will come in and do it.
And Mickey, in all reality, how much better could Saban, Meyer and Carroll do? Being at the top of the field in college football doesn't seem to be all that bad.

justwannaread,
Its Ok to disagree but Southern Cal fans are probably tired of losing games they have no business losing. Also, those guys have much more experience. And they are playing with the best players in the country. They all could still be a little better. I just think Dabo and most head coaches have too much on their plate to be calling plays too. They need to manage the game not micromanage each play.

Also, just to note, I am not saying I have the answers. Maybe he can do all of it. Maybe he is experienced enough to handle everything. The results don't indicate it right now. I think he has a chance to be a great head coach. I just think he needs to delegate more.

MP,
You may be right, but you don't delegate reponsibility to someone who can't do the job. I agree with you about this point, in general, but if Napier can't do the job, then a change has to be made, or else the season will be a bust. In a perfect world, Dabo would delegate resonsibility of calling the plays and devising the offensive gameplan to the offensive coordinator and concentrate on other things, but we all know the Clemson Football world is not perfect right now, so it stands to reason that Dabo needs to move to Plan B.
This is nothing personal against the coaches or players, because I think they are doing their best, but I also think some of the above may be in over their heads at this point. That could obviously change over the course of the season.

I mirror your opinion Micky; pay a guy to do the job and let him do it. Like any other job; if he's not doing a good job then let him go and find someone who can. My question is: where was our defense? All spring and early in the season; we were told of how dominant our defense was going to be; I haven't seen it yet! As far as the tackling; when you have the defensive backs trying to "bump" somebody down and are afraid to use their arms and "wrap" them up; then you have missed tackles. When I was growing up; if my coach saw me trying to tackle someone by "blocking" into them and not using my arms to wrap him up; they would have lifted me up by my facemask and chewed me a new one!

i'm ticked and surprised at the maryland loss, but we don't really know how bad they are or how good we are at this point in time, and will not know until we see a finished product.still,i possess nothing but confidence we will turn this thing around as we usually do and make a run at this thing.this will provide us all what direction we are headed in as a program,as well as whether or not we can play for a title yet or not.do not despair tiger fans,we are all better than that and remember "ADVERSITY CAN SERVE AS AN ENEMY OR AS A CATALYST".

The best solution is to hire a proven hc with a proven oc who knows their jobs.Dabo and Billy are in over their heads and dont have a clue about what they are doing.Enjoy losing seasons until these idiots are gone.

cubobby80,
Your thoughts should be kept in your head. South Carolina hired a very well proven head coach and look where they were in his first year of coaching. Come up with a better "solution".

I know,i know..but Danny said,repeatedly,.."on game day,i coach the coaches...i may get after the defense."
