Big Game?

Big Game?
Here we are again. It’s Big Game Week.

That kind of sounds like a promotion on the Outdoor Network but instead it is where we are with college football today. In today’s world, when you win you are the best and a genius but a loss means you are not a good coach and this team is in trouble.

I have noticed that it is not good enough to just anymore. Now, you have to win pretty. Clemson had its second best game in ACC history on the defensive side of the football by holding Boston College to just 54 total yards. The defense forced turnovers and gave the offense great field position. The special teams had a fantastic day with a punt return for a touchdown, a terrific punting effort and six field goals. Yet, I have fielded a bunch of e-mails and calls on my radio show complaining about the red zone offense.

The last few years Clemson would have killed to have an 18-point victory against Boston College but now you can’t please some folks.

So now the Tigers have Texas Christian coming to town and this is the next “Big Game.” Here are eight reasons why this is a big game:

It’s the Next Game
As mentioned above, fans want to win every game so in essence, every game is a big game. Coaches feel pressure to win every game and thus every game is a big game. And from a psychological standpoint, you have to focus on the upcoming game without regard to the rest of the schedule, so THIS is the only big game that matters THIS week.

Ranked Opponent
Clemson gets a chance to beat a ranked opponent this week. TCU finished last season ranked seventh in both polls and the Horned Frogs enter Saturday’s game 14th in one poll and 15th in the other. A victory against a ranked opponent gives the Tigers credibility.

National Exposure
I know this is not a TV game but the country will take notice of this game Saturday. Scores involving games with ranked teams fly across the bottom of TV screens all across the nation and the winner of this game will get time on the national review shows.

The Conference
This is one I could not care less about. I am not a fan of the ACC and have zero interest in any ACC team outside of Clemson looking good. Last week, I was pulling for Nebraska against Virginia Tech and BYU against Florida State. It would have suited me if East Carolina would have beaten North Carolina. But for those that do care about the ACC, this is a big game for the conference. Also the Mountain West took a beating last week with BYU and Utah losing so that conference needs this win for credibility.

Dabo vs. Gary Patterson
About 325 days ago some felt TCU’s Gary Patterson might have been the next head football coach at Clemson University. If he comes into Death Valley and wins then the people who were touting him for the job will have some ammunition. Dabo has probably not thought a lot about it but a win over TCU on Saturday would send a message to those who might have doubted the hire.

The Offense Gets a Major Test
We have seen Clemson move the ball so far in the first three games but the red zone issues have popped up. This Saturday Clemson will face an aggressive 4-2-5 scheme and one of the nation’s top defensive players in Jerry Hughes. TCU loves to pressure offenses and this Clemson offense will face perhaps its biggest challenge this weekend. If they can move the ball Saturday I would think you could see a lot of confidence gained by the offensive unit.

It’s a Home Game
If Clemson wants to get its program back to where it once was then the Tigers have to make Death Valley a feared venue again. From November of 1980 to September of 1985 Clemson went a stretch of 25 homes games in which the Tigers went 23-0-2. There was a stretch from September of 1986 until September of 1992 where the Tigers went 32-3-2 at home. Clemson must make Death Valley and a pit for opposing teams. During those two remarkable stretches of play in the early eighties and late eighties to early nineties often times the opponent was beaten before the game because of the intimidation factor. I will discuss this topic in more detail in Thursday’s blog.

3-1 vs. 2-2
Of all of the reasons why this is a big game, the major reason in my mind is the record. In my opinion, there is a big difference between 3-1 and 2-2. When you see professional basketball or baseball play-off series then you see this really show up. A 3-1 mark is very respectable and Clemson could head to Maryland next week full of confidence. At 2-2 the Tigers take a trip to College Park with confidence left behind. At 3-1 Clemson would be favored at Maryland and at home against Wake Forest and could take a 5-1 record to Miami. At 2-2 the Tigers would still be favored over the Terps and Deacons but a loss at Miami could mean a 4-3 record. So this game is huge for momentum and confidence. A 3-1 mark is light years ahead of a 2-2 record.

So this week’s game is the next big game. It is not a conference game and in the grand scheme of things is not as big as all eight of the ACC games or the South Carolina game. If that is the case this is probably the tenth biggest game on the schedule.

However, TCU is ranked and Clemson needs the confidence. A 3-1 mark is a big deal compared to 2-2. It is a home game as well and the Tigers need to defend their home turf. But the main reason this is a big game is because this is the next game.

I am looking forward to a big game atmosphere in Death Valley Saturday at 3:30. Please check in tomorrow for a blog on Death Valley and how we can renew an old tradition.

Comments:

I will gladly take a 25-7 win this week with 6 FG's. Any win vs. TCU will be a good win. I suspect their defense will cause all kinds of havoc for our offense.

Why not pull for the ACC? First, if you like playing in big games then you would want the other teams in the league to be good. Second, a one-loss SEC team can get into the national championship game, but I don't think the same could be said for a one-loss ACC team at this point. I am all for the other teams in the league having success as long as it is not against us.

I think the biggest thing a win on Saturday would do for us is give the team some confidence, which we will need later in the season. This game, however, is not make or break like the upcoming games with MD and Wake will be. IMO, those two are must-wins if we want to go to Tampa.

"From November of 1980 to September of 1985 Clemson went a stretch of 25 homes games in which the Tigers went 23-0-2."

This stat is incorrect. We lost to USC at home in 1984.

Mickey---I in general share your disdain for pulling for ACC teams but the SEC TV deal changes everything. Our ACC brothers had best win as many as we can to help improve our TV product. The $$$$ do matter.

Agree with the Death Valley statement. Its time to step it up. Gets old being the only one making noise during big third downs, isn't too hard to at least clap.

"This will be the toughest environment we’ve ever played in since I’ve been at TCU," Patterson said. "They’re just loud. Football is really, really important there." Patterson.

"I have noticed that it is not good enough to just anymore."

So true.

I don't think it's that fans aren't happy with an ugly win as much as they're scared that if the offense looks impotent against mediocre teams, then there may be critical losses ahead against high-octane teams like Miami, FSU, et al.

Two more reason that this game is important:
1) Future TV coverage and game times. If Clemson wins this one, then Clemson is likely to be on TV (and perhaps in better time slots) for the next several games.

2) Recruiting. Recruits want to go to winners, not losers. And, with the uncertainty around the coaching longevity of our newbie coach (and the potential resurgence of FSU, Miami, UNC, et al) it is critical for Clemson to win lots of games this year and pull recruits off the fence.

I agree with your take, Razz. If we can't score an offensive touchdown against BC, then how are we going to do against TCU, Wake, FSU, Miami, NCSU, SCU, ect. I could not be happier with the defense and special teams, but the offense is going to have to improve if we are going to accomplish many of our goals.

Tigers3819,
You are correct. It should have read until November of 1984. Thanks for pointing that out.

your right about being 3-1 over 2-2 a 5-1 record headed to Miami sounds nice! JUST WIN BABY !

Mickey-do you think there was a player on this years BC that could have started on the 05 or 07 team? I didn't see one who would have started for MTSU. That was the sorriest(Non-Duke)ACC team I have seen in the Valley since Tommy West was here and we settled for FGs because we could not punch it in even though we dominated them.I see that as a cause for concern. If you were pleased with 6 FGs and a return when playing the last place team in the div at home then you need to raise your expectations a little. I don't expect us to go 13-0, but I do expect us to woodshed the Sisters of the Blind when we play them.

All the conference games are not bigger then TCU. Games like UVA and Maryland, who are pathetic this year, should simply be wins. A competitive conference game is bigger than TCU because it matters, if we are competitive with UVA and/or Maryland then we have so many problems NONE of them are big this year.

It also depends on the situation you are in at the point you play the game. As you said, 3-1 is very much different from 2-2, another reason this game is big. They are top 25, another reason. GT was our first big game, we didn't pass. BC was not a big game, it was simply a must win at that point in the season. TCU is our second big game of the year, Miami will be our 3rd.

Right now I see us as better than 8 of the 12 teams on our schedule. Being better than MD, BC, UVA, or Duke doesn't say a whole lot. We need to prove something by winning at least one (preferably more) vs. the 3 remaining teams on our schedule that are ranked (TCU, Miami, FSU). We won't have any respect until we do. I bet we'll have to finish the regular season 9-3 to be ranked.

It seems like your comment about "I guess you can't please some folks" means you are content with not scoring in the red zone at all last Saturday? Well sorry, but I'm not pleased. How could you be? We are about to go against a powerful defense in TCU, but we can't score a touch down vs. BC. Nope I'm not pleased Mickey, and neither should you be. Yes, our defense played outstanding, but I am concerned about our offense.

Furthermore Mickey, you couldn't care less about the ACC winning. Again, I guess you would be content with playing in a weak conference that gets ridiculed year after year. How could you not pull for your conference? I dont know about you but I want to play in a powerhouse conference!

National Exposure? Get real. ESPN360 is not national exposure, and neither is a ticker update. If you don't have a good Top 10, just pare it back to a Top 5. This will be a Big Game for fans to take home the swine flu.

Mickey,

This comment is unrelated to the current post but in reference to your comments regarding uncooperation on the part of certain administrative officials to be "all in" regarding giving necessary support in order to see us return to championships in football. I would respectfully ask for you to share w/either me personally or on your show or blog NAMES and SPECIFICs. To say you have info and to not gather support for our staff by witholding shows, to me, an unwillingness to see the problem fixed. There's power in loud voices especially from those who faithfully support this program. I am a doner of 30 plus years, a local professional and resident and have professional interaction with more than one of Dabo's staff. The Chaplain and his family are especially close to me professionally. I hope to hear from you soon.
