Friday E-Mail Bag

Friday E-Mail Bag
Each Friday I publish your comments and answer your questions. To submit a comment or questions please e-mail me at mickeyplyler@hotmail.com.

Mickey,

I read your blog every day and listen to your radio show as much as possible. I know you are a BIG Willy Korn fan, so I wanted to make a prediction and pose a hypothetical for you. I predict that Cullen Harper will have an outstanding game Monday night, and continue to get better throughout the season IF he is not handcuffed by ultraconservative play calling. If there is the attitude that "he's not the most talented, but he doesn't have to be" then we will see a repeat of last year. My question for you is, if my prediction pans out, and Cullen goes on to be a two year starter, will we all be satisfied with Willy following suit as a two year starter also? Part two of that question is shouldn't we wait as long as possible before giving up the redshirt option on Willy? I know you want to see Willy play real bad, and we all do, but try to be objective on your opinion on this. Thanks, and Go Tigers!

Alan

Alan,
I agree on Harper having a good season because the staff is extremely high on him right now. I will disagree on one point when you said I want to see Willy play real bad. I could not care less who starts. I just want to play the player that gives the team the best chance to win. That is obviously Harper now but there is no way to tell when or if Korn will eventually be that guy. I think he will eventually take over but I am not sure when. I doubt they red-shirt him thought because he is the second team guy.

Mickey,

I sent this letter to the athletic department. Love your blog, wish I was closer to get your radio show.

To whom it may concern,
I know you are all very busy preparing for the opening game this Monday. I just wanted to briefly express an idea that came to me and could become something special. Would it be at all feasible to advertise and encourage people to either bring $4.16 in cash or check to the VT game to signify support of the April 16, 2007 tragedy? If even 1/4 of the fans did so, it
would be more than $80,000 which could be donated to the relief fund. Of course some people would be more than willing to give more. I am a Clemson alumni and would love the opportunity to show how caring and supportive the Clemson family can be to another University that is still reeling from the tragedy. Thank you for your time and GO TIGERS!!!

Shaun

Shaun,

I think it is a great idea. I have forwarded your e-mail to a few people that might can help get the idea in motion. This will be a special reception all season and I know Clemson will do something special for our visitors from Blacksburg.

Mickey,

Why would Bowden put undue pressure on our starting kicker by saying more people will be watching him than Beckham? He went on to criticize Buchholz's comment about being less nervous about football than soccer. Kickers are head cases to begin with, so why add fuel to the fire? This isn't the kind of motivation to put on a first-year starting kicker like you would a battle for D-End. This doesn't seem like smart or supportive coaching. Maybe he needs to leave special teams coaching to the assistant over special teams. He certainly doesn't have a good history in that aspect of the game.

Pawboy

Pawboy,

I don’t think this is as big a deal as you do. I have talked to Trevor Adair and he says Buchholz is a mentally strong kid. He thinks he will have no problem handling the pressure. Maybe the comments will hurt but I doubt it.

Mick,

Prediction?

Thanks,
Tim

Tim,

I am out of the prediction business but I do have some gut feelings. First FSU cannot be as bad as they have been lately. I think they have been out of shape and not coached very well in the past five or so years. I think they got complacent. I also believe that the Seminoles are dangerous because they have a chip on their shoulder and they want to get back the form they once had.

However, I think Clemson is a better football team and home field advantage will be hard to overcome. I do not believe that the Tigers are good enough to play bad and not execute and still win. There is not a lot of difference in these two programs so neither team can fail to execute but still win.

Mickey,

I have read the stuff about Clemson and Alabama but what are the odds of this happening?

Clearwater Tiger

Clearwater Tiger,

I think it sounds pretty good right now. But I have learned through the years that football schedules and contracts with some schools mean nothing. It seems like we hear about schools getting out of contracts to play other schools all of the time. The good news here is that we are not talking about eight years down the road. If they sign the deal this close to the game then I think it will happen.

Mickey,

I hate to ask a basketball question in football season but what is the tournament we are playing in this weekend and what do we know about the team so far? Thanks for your response and GIVE EM HELL PURNELL!!!!!!

Kenny

Kenny,

We had assistant basketball coach Shaka Smart on the radio show this week and he talked about the event and the freshmen. The NCAA allows basketball teams to play in an exhibition outside of the US once every four years. Most of the time this is done during the summer but the staff wanted to wait until now so they can take the freshmen with them. They were allowed ten practices before so this will help advance the freshmen quicker. Usually you have to wait until October 15 to start practice but this gives the team a big head start. Coach Smart says the freshman have looked good. Terrence Ogelsby led the team in scoring in a scrimmage and he can extend the defense like Shawon Robinson. He said Damontez Stitt is a very bright point guard that should play a bunch this season. He also loved Jerai Grant’s leaping ability and his skills as a rebounder. Coach Smart said they threw a lot at the freshmen in a short time but he likes this team and he could not be more excited about the season and the progress of the program.

Comments:

Virginia Tech football is NOT the medium to have people cope and heal from the awful tragedy that happened in April. That has, and is, taking place now through other means (church, support groups, friends & family, etc…). Football does help the VT community by supplying a sense of normalcy, no question. But that will be achieved this first weekend, and I understand the attention and think it is the right thing to do. But real normalcy is not achieved by ESPN & every team VT plays highlighting the tragedy as part of EVREY game (which I am sure they will do) for the rest of the season. It also does not involve every school that they play giving them money to ‘signify support’. What does that mean anyway? I am sorry for your loss, here’s $80,000? I know we are all good people who have our hearts in the right place and just want to help, but I suggest the best way to truly help VT is stop reminding them of the tragedy every week for the next 3 months. Helping them truly feel normal would be the best help we could offer.

Mickey - you wrote above:

"I just want to play the player that gives the team the best chance to win. That is obviously Korn now but there is no way to tell when or if Korn will eventually be that guy. I think he will eventually take over but I am not sure when."

So you think Korn is "obviously" the player that gives the team the best chance to win right now? Please explain. Or did you mean to say Harper (which would be a pretty significant typo).

I agree with PokerTiger. Couldn't have said it better myself.

PokerTiger --

You are going to get hell for that, but I completely agree. I'm not going to go on a rant, like I normally do, because everything I have to say is not politically correct and I'm sure people will take/interpret it the wrong way. I am merely going to state that I agree with you and everyone needs to move on.

GO TIGERS!

I have written this before about the QB situation: It would be very positive if Harper can do very well which would keep Korn in a Tim Tebow type situation. Florida's starting QB had a great year, and Tebow was outstanding in multiple situations - some crucial. Also, if this was the situation, it could put the Tigers in a similar fantastic situation as the real USC, where they have 4 quarterbacks who are all expected to be NFL draftpicks, and only two of them will get significant playing time. They go there because they know USC puts out NFL quality QBs. A great example is Mustain transferring there from Arkansas, despite the other three great QBs there. Wouldn't it be great for the Tigers to develop this same reputation as well for the running backs (which is looking like it is probably happening now!) as well as all the other positions! "Our cup floweth over!"

tomerfan,

Sorry for the typo as I meant Harper. Sorry for the mix up.
