They Come in Threes?
Here is to hoping bad things don’t happen in threes. Two weeks ago my wife and son had the automobile accident and thank goodness everyone was OK. Then last week I had a herniated disk in my back. After six visits to doctors, chiropractors and physical therapists, I am now doing so much better.

I was extremely lucky because my disk issues did not have nerve issues like many. The only major problems I had were the spasms and the fact that my back locked up on me. But thanks to Clemson’s team physician, Len Reeves, and Stacy Harward, the director of Clemson Sports Medicine and Rehabilitations, I am on my way to a miracle recovery. On Friday was not optimistic but today I feel a 180-degree turnaround thanks to these guys.

Both the wreck and my back could have been much worse and my family is very thankful and grateful.

Since I did not post on Friday because of doctors visits and Monday in observance of Memorial Day, I want to review some of the items that have surfaced since Thursday’s blog.

1. The ACC Tournament
I had a blog about a month ago that mentioned the problems with the new format in the ACC baseball tournament. I thought we would encounter problems and unfortunately Clemson did not benefit from the new format.

I did not watch the Wake Forest-Miami game Saturday but several friends mentioned Miami’s commitment level. Once Clemson won earlier in the day Miami was eliminated and according to some theories the Canes had little incentive. What a shame. The idea of a team not having anything to play for in a tournament and that lack of incentive being part of the outcome is awful.

On the flip side, Clemson and all of the ACC teams knew the scenario before the tournament started. The Tigers controlled their own destiny until they lost to the Deacons on Friday.

As far as the tournament itself, I was pleased with the Tigers performance. David Kopp’s masterpiece was a thing of beauty. Clemson beats FSU three out of four this year and the Tigers would be confident in a return trip to Tallahassee.

It was also nice to see Brad Chalk back in action. I have called Chalk the heart and soul of this team and I think his presence is the single key to the offense.

2.Regionals
I could make an argument for Clemson hosting this weekend but I could also make an argument for Coastal Carolina. I do not think the Tigers should be an underdog this weekend and part of me thinks this may be a good thing for this team.

I like the idea of playing a neutral game or road game but actually have a home crowd. I would be surprised if Clemson did not have more fans than Coastal Carolina this weekend.

It is my understanding that Kopp will go Friday at noon against St. Johns on ESPNU. I am hearing that Clemson will go with Daniel Moskos Saturday if and when they face Coastal as the Chants have a lot of lefties in their lineup.

3. Super Regionals
I know better than to get too far ahead of myself but I really like the Super Regional match up if Clemson and FSU advance from this weekend. Clemson is very familiar with the Seminoles and have already defeated FSU three out of four this season. In fact all four games were in Florida including the three-game regular season set in Tallahassee.

In ACC basketball you hear the theory of how difficult it is to beat a team three times in one year anytime two teams see each other in the ACC tournament and one team swept the regular season. I have always disagreed with that line of thinking. In my opinion, confidence is more important than anything else and success leads to confidence.

4. Rashaad Jackson
Clemson student-athletes compiled a 2.93 GPA for the spring semester, the highest on record, according to data released Tuesday by Clemson University's Office of Institutional Research and Planning . Two-hundred and twenty-nine student-athletes were named to the honor roll, 52.2 percent of the student-athlete population. The Clemson football team had a 2.46 team GPA for the spring semester, tied for the fifth best team GPA on record. Each of the top six semesters on record have taken place under Bowden. Twenty-five members of the team made the academic honor roll.

I think that is awesome but I really love the names and not just the numbers. Two-hundred and twenty-nine is an impressive number but the one I love seeing is Rashaad Jackson.

When he came out of Union High School many said Jackson did not belong in college. He had a learning disability that had hindered him before he got to Clemson. A former Clemson coach wanted to play Jackson as a true freshman because he did not think Jackson could stay eligible long. Well here we are three years later and Jackson made the Dean’s List for the second consecutive semester.

Student-athletes at Clemson are required for at least 10 hours per week at Vickery Hall but in many weeks Jackson sees 30 hours there. No one works harder than Jackson and for his hard work to see these kind of dividends is an inspiring message.

I think it is also good for the AARC supporters to see what can happen if people are given a chance.

It was nice to see Willy Korn make the list in his first semester.

Athletic Council
Last Thursday I wrote the piece about the Athletic Council and its 11-1 vote to disagree with the Presidential Task Force’s findings. I received about 10-12 e-mails inquiring about the Athletic Council. Several wanted to know who was on the council and how they could be reached. Here are the members and their e-mail addresses:

Clementia Adams (sosulli@clemson.edu), Andrew Billings (acbilng@clemson.edu) Lynn Craig (clynn@clemson.edu), Ken Revis-Wagner (RC@clemson.edu), Paul Dawson (pdawson@clemson.edu), Eric Benson (ebenson@clemson.edu), Pat Raymark (praymar@clemson.edu), Les Carlson (Icarlsol@clemson.edu), Sandy Edge (sedge@clemson.edu), KB Kulasekera (kk@clemson.edu), Ken Marcus (marcusr@clemson.edu), Dennis Smith (dwsmith@clemson.edu), Fran McGuire (lefty@clemson.edu), Janie Hidge (hodge@clemson.edu), Deborah Cadorette (djcat@clemson.edu), Lois Sill (sloid@clemson.edu), Alan Burns (aburns@clemson.edu, Stephen Gosnell (jgosnel@clemson.edu), Nishant Karamchandani (nkaramc@clemson.edu), Michael Mikota (mikota@clemson.edu), Chelsea Kautz (ckautz@clemson.edu), Hap Carr (hapcarr@bellsouth.net), Webb Smathers (wsmthrs@clemson.edu), Mary Poore (mpoore@clemson.edu), Elaine Richardson (erchrds@clemson.edu), Alesia Smith (alesias@clemson.edu) Ron Addis (raddis@clemson.edu).

In an 11-1 vote the one vote against the resolution was David Parker (dprkr@clemson.edu).

I am a little surprised that the Athletic Council has about 30 voting members but only 12 were present for this vote. However it does not shock me. On Friday when many Clemson fans gathered at the Esso Club to watch the baseball team against Wake Forest, a few members of this council were outside and seemed to be oblivious that the baseball team was even playing in the ACC tournament and the game was on inside on TV.

Good Luck
Perhaps my main detractor, Otisman, is getting married this weekend. I just wanted to wish Otisman (Chris Morton) and his lucky fiancé a happy marriage. I hope the wedding and honeymoon go well. Hopefully Otisman will be back after a short break. I would not know what to do without his comments each day. Good Luck Otisman and Otislady.

Great blog Mickey.
I watched the Wake vs Miami game and would agree that Miami looked flat and Wake looked energized. Beating FSU and Miami in a tournament held in the state of Florida was sweet, but watching the 8 seed play for the ACC Title was very, very bitter. Such is life in RR tourney's.
It's nice to hear that the student athletes are working hard and doing well in the classroom, and especially nice to read about Richard Jackson's achievments. Maybe the Academic Review Board could look at guys like Jackson and Gaines Adams and figure out that it's not always a cut and dry issue.
And finally...it appears that we need yet another committee: the TTALYC (Try To Act Like You Care) Committee would send out emails to all of the council members to remind them of future Tiger sporting events. It's not very encouraging to read words like "oblivious" in the same sentence as "a few members of this council."

GoodFella - I thought the Academic Board is there because it isn't cut and dry.....if it was, there would be no need to review all things considered and handle appeals. One could argue that the semester figures show that maybe the AARC is actually doing a good job at their job?

And I don't see why it is such a necessity that those on the Committee have to make sure to give the appearance that they know Tiger Baseball is on TV. The expectations that people have on others is unbelievable.

Justwanna- if Richard Jackson or Gaines Adams was going to graduate from HS this year, do you think the AARC would have allowed us to offer either of them?
I'll give credit where credit is due. These kids are the one's studying and taking the tests...my kudos go to them, not to some review board who "thought" they could or could not do it. Do you think any of the AARC members are tutoring the kids?
I do not have unreasonable expectations for these committee members...I simply stated that "oblivious" does not read well when they're the subject of discussion. Surely it's not unbelievable to expect consciousness?

GoodFella - didn't mean to give the impression that I thought the AARC deserved credit for individual academic achievements. Fact is, I was responding to your point in saying that maybe the AARC isn't needed......without details, you can't make that inferrence. Maybe Jackson (or others like him) wouldn't have gone before the board because their numbers were high enough, but then again maybe he did or would and the committee would be able to see that he had the work ethic and desire to achieve academic success. Character, at least on blogs earlier in this whole ordeal, seemed to suggest that trends, achievements, extenuating circumstances and overall general impression of character plays into decisions.

Was Adams questionable academically? I haven't heard that one before.

Providing the email address of Clemson students to the fine readers of your blog so that they can bombard the kids with angry emails. You've outdone yourself once again.

Justwanna-
Jackson (according to Mickey and "many" others) had a learning disability and was considered to "not belong in college." Adams was a partial qualifier and had to attend Fork Union prep school before transferring to Clemson.
Based on what I've read about the AARC, it seems unlikely that either of them would have been given a chance today...at Clemson anyway.
I did not say that the AARC isnt needed. I said that they could look at Jackson and Adams as examples of how some kids are capable of persevering, rather than just looking at some test scores and determining the kids ceiling.

jhwalla,
These names and e-mail addresses are provided by the athletic department on the school's official athletic webpage. This is a public council. Their membership is public. The minutes of their meetings are public. The e-mail addresses are public knowledge. The information I provided is straight from the website. It has their names and e-mail addresses. Go to the page and read their minutes. This is a public institution. I was asked who they were and how to reach them and I gave them info from the website. How is that wrong?

mickey, don't mind jhwalla (CobyD). He's just a wannabe writer who believes that putting down others makes him look good.

Didn't the AARC approve Jackson? Seems like they are doing their job. Some clear the AARC and don't make it and some that didn't clear the AARC could make it. Again, Jackson passed the AARC or he wouldn't be here. Mickey, I'm support the AARC, they admitted Jackson and he has done well. How is that not a good thing? Any way you look at it, there will always be a line in the sand, a bar to jump over, a standard. I'd rather keep the Clemson standard higher than most, not necessarily the highest, but higher than most. Jackson has apparently made the most of his time here at Clemson and he will leave here better for that effort. Since 95% of all of our athletes leave Clemson and go "pro" in something besides their sports, we need to make sure we admit those who can achieve success academically.

Mickey - Hap Carr is a personal friend of mine, and he loves Clemson athletics more than 99% of the Clemson grads I know. He is at every game, and he travels everywhere to follow our Tigers. Hap would NEVER do anything to jeopardize Clemson athletics.

Now I don't know the whole story behind this Athletic Council, but I do know Hap. So something tells me YOU don't know the whole story either. You might try getting to know some of these people before throwing hot grease all over them.

By the way, Mickey, you've said yourself that you'll never reveal your "sources" to us, but if somebody doesn't do something your way, it appears you have no problem throwing those folks under the bus by providing the public (who have only been told half the story - YOUR half) with those folks' email addresses, thereby encouraging hate mail to those people from every direction.

You should really be ashamed, Mickey...very ashamed. It embarrasses me as a Clemson graduate that one of the most well-known Clemson representatives in the upstate media would do something like what you're doing.

I wish you'd leave Clemson and go down to Gator country. Everybody knows you'd rather be there anyway.

Topher,
I also know Hap Carr. I also think he loves Clemson. I never questioned his love for Clemson and you should be ashamed of yourself for suggesting otherwise. I only responded to tell who was on the Athletic Council and only gave the e-mail addresses that are on the univeristy's athletic department web page. This is public knowledge. The minutes of their meetings are made public on their webpage. Why should I be ashamed? This is a public institution. There are no secrets as to who is on the Athletic Council. I only provided them straight from their website. Their e-mail addresses are public. I provided them straight from their website. I responded to a request from 10-12 e-mails I had. Please explain to me why I should be ashamed? Please tell me where I have ever told the first lie on this blog? The facts are there. The Athletic Council voted 11-1 against the presidential task force. That is a fact. If that is they way they voted then shouldn't they be proud of their vote? It is a public vote. When the minutes come out we will all know who was present at the vote and we know the 11-1 vote and who was the lobe vote against the majority from the Charleston Newspaper article. I am not ashamed and should not be. Everything I write and say is in the public. Is it not hypocritical for you to accuse me of encouraging hate mail? Seems like that is what you just did to me. The only difference is I am proud of my actions and words and don;t mind who knows how I feel or how I vote on anything. You prove your ignorance witht the Florida comment. Topher, your post is the one that is embarassing.

I just love how some of these individuals are so against you, but they are reading this by CHOICE. Maybe we should create a "Fairness Doctrine" for Mickey's blogs and that way we can read both sides, haha. Where is OwlGore when you need him?!? (or the HildaBEAST!)
