15,000

15,000
I probably need to start the blog today with a couple of confessions. First, I am terrible at estimating crowds or attendance. I may type better or my grammar may be better than I am at crowd estimations and that is scary.

The other confession is that I was not at fan appreciation day this year. I have been maybe 15 times over the past 41 years but I did not go yesterday.

Maybe I am making too much of it but I am amazed that an estimated 15,000 Clemson fans showed up yesterday. Last year the Anderson Independent Mail newspaper said more than 2,000 people showed up for fan appreciation day and this year Tim Bourret estimated 15,000. I think this is significant because it says something about the fan base heading into the season.

I have considered several things as to the dramatic increase in the number of fans who attended the event. Here are a few potential explanations:

1. Maybe the difference was not as great as reported. Maybe there was not a dramatic increase. Maybe the number of people was much greater than 2,000 last year and maybe there was not 15,000 this year.

2. People love C.J. Spiller.

3. People are excited about football and this team.

4. The economy means families are looking for things to do that are inexpensive.

5. People love Dabo.

Maybe there is not one true reason for the surge in interest. I do think it is safe to say there was not a 13,000 increase in attendance from last year to this year. But even if it was 5,000 last year and 10,000 this year then that is a significant increase.

The Spiller thing does not hold water because Spiller was here last year. In fact, James Davis was here also and both were popular. The “Thunder and Lightning” thing seemed it would have a bigger draw than just “Lightning”.

Number three is valid but not more in 2009 than 2008. Last year at this time Clemson was ranked number nine in the nation. More players were pre-season All-ACC and they had the pre-season ACC pre-season player of the year. On paper there were a lot more reasons to be excited about fan appreciation day 2008.

Maybe number four is a legitimate point. Families have less than they did last year and you can’t get any less expensive than free.

In the end, though, I think number five is the biggest factor. Dabo has connected to Clemson people. The connection is what they have not had in recent years. This is what they have been starving for.

I recently told a Clemson administrator that Coach Ford changed the way you do it at Clemson and Clemson has not had this. The athletic director does not go to IPTAY meetings and many don’t find him warm and approachable. The last head coach was not the kind of guy that made the masses feel connected either. Clemson is the kind of place where people want to feel close to their football program and fan appreciation day is a great example of that.

Maybe Dabo is so popular because people wanted change. We saw that in November from the presidential election. Sometimes people want change just for the sake of change. Maybe Dabo is popular because he is not Bowden.

Maybe he is popular because he is still new and has not been damaged yet. He often says, “Everyone loves a winner and a beginner.” Maybe he is still new enough.

Or maybe people get him because he gets them. Maybe Dabo is just a “Clemson” guy. Maybe is just one of us.

We love to use the term, “Clemson people.” We take pride in that. I think we all can agree that Clemson is a special place and the reason is the people. Joe Sherman’s masterpiece, “There’s Something in These Hills” talks about that.

Maybe we have found our new leader. We have starved for someone to put all of these pieces together and lead us and maybe we have found that guy. Maybe Dabo has the kind leadership skills that have inspired us to follow him.

Don’t get me wrong, you can never please everyone. I sometimes read the messages boards on the three major Clemson sites and I hear from the Tiger fans on my radio show. It seems in today’s world people can agree on very little. Even at a great place like Clemson you would think there would be more common ground but good Clemson people seem to disagree on uniform colors, uniform styles, size of the paw on the helmets, parking, tickets, coaches, schemes, personnel, Top 20, game times, etc.

It seems to me that society is more divided about all aspects of life. We seem to like to disagree. It seems to me that more people think they are smarter and need to prove it and have more access to prove their point now. Political talk shows, sports talk shows, face book, twitter, blogs and message boards give us all of the time in the world to disagree and prove out point.

But I still think people would rather agree than disagree. It just feels better to be positive than negative.

And along comes Dabo.

See, I believe timing is the key. People here want to believe. They were worn out and needed something new. Combine this with his infectious positive attitude and you get what we saw yesterday.

Maybe some people just wanted his autograph and more people came out because they already had Bowden’s. But I doubt that.

I really think people want to believe and feel good about getting behind this team. Not everyone. Some are just negative people that never want to believe. But many of us are so ready and see this inspiration asking us to get on board.

I have mentioned several times how interested I am in psychology and sports and this is a fascinating time as it relates to Clemson football.

I am interested in hearing from those who are “All In” and why they feel that way. If you are compelled, please e-mail me at mickeyplyler@hotmail.com and I will post on Friday. Thanks in advance.

Comments:

Dabo's success will be measured in wins and losses just like every coach, and the number of people who are all-in will have a direct correltation with our level of success at that particular moment. He is saying all the right things, and has everyone excited, but I am sure he knows that he has to win in order to keep the momentum, and that he is on a short leesh with the fans, and probably the administration. I don't think it is fair, but it is the truth.

I can't say that I'm "all in", simply because I think it's corny and irrelevant. As a fan, I'll be pulling for Clemson to win every game and a national title. If Clemson does well, I'll sing Dabo's praises. But if Clemson loses every game, I'll be calling for Dabo's ouster. Is that all-in, part-in, all-out, or irrelevant?

One thing is for certain in my opinion as a fan/observer who hasn't spoken with either coach... Dabo is SO much more likeable and seemingly genuine than Bowden (though I'm sure Bowden is a nice guy). That wouldn't affect my decision to go to Fan Day one way or the other. But personality difference really hit me yesterday when I was listening to the following Fan Day interview with Dabo.

Hopefully the player will respond well to Dabo's personality and be all in.

No doubt the 'proof is in the pudding' and Dabo, despite all the positive vibes, will not be any more immune to that than his predecessors.

That said, there is no doubt his message, enthusiasm and straightforwardness has resonated with "The Family"...And why not? Could he be any more different than TB? We were all tired of his coach speak, aloofness and his seeming satisfaction with mediocrity, so of course the exact opposite is refreshing.

But, again...if we are sitting 3-5 or even 4-4 2/3 of the way through the season...well, we all know what the vibe will be then...

While being a supporter I had many concerns over the hire, experience, landing a big name to draw recruits, etc.

However, over ths summer and into the spring and fall there are several things happening that I really like.

1. Every EXTERNAL hire seems to be a higher grade than the Bowden hires and they all have that nasty look about them that we need. What was the knock on us? All finess and soft. Sorry, but some of these new assistants have a "different" look about them.

2. We are hearing about a nenewed emphasis on physicality and simplicity. Examples included simpler blocking schemes, play calling at what the players understand and do well, larger lineman and linebackers. The use of Deihl and Alexander, etc.

3. A renewal of tradition, paws and stripes forever.

Mind you, I still have that feeling of skepticism but everything that could be done in terms of attitude and philosophy over the past few months...was.

maybe people wanted to go because they knew Bowden was not going to be there!!

Sometimes all a team needs is a change in attitude.

Coming into the 1977 season Clemson was loaded with talent, but they hadn't shown it on the field previously.

All they needed was an attitude adjustment.

A new coach (from the old staff) came in and provided just that "spark" that was needed to go from dismal 2-9, 3-6-2 records to a fine 8-3-1 followed by ana astound ing 11-1 and a #6 national ranking in 1978.

Wouldn't it be great if that sort of thing happened again in a couple of weeks??

AD not warm and approachable? True ole BR wasn't perfect but you never sent and email or question that you didn't get some kind of response. I've never ever heard anything back from TDP on an email or question. Sadly a couple nvoileved fan safety.

There are many aspects to the AD job. I'm sure many are things I'm not even aware of. In connection to alums and fans though TDP fails miserably.

I can understand not complying with evcery request but to ignore you completely is arrogant and rude no matter who you are.

It may be all about winning now but it
wasn't always that way. Frank Howard was well loved by the majority of Clemson people and though he won his share he also lost his share too. I think people have changed to some degree. I still agree with Joe Sherman but am not sure that is even a majority opinion any more. I like Dabo because he is a likable man with a great story and I think he is good for Clemson. If his team goes undefeated this year and loses the 2010 opener, some people will start to grumble. God is great, beer is good and people are crazy.

Mickey....Last year there was 20,000 not 2000 that was a error.I was able to meet everyone this year but last year missed the whole defense.

Chriswinsalways,
The crowd was estiomated at 2,000 last year according to the Anderson-Independent Mail.

"More than 15,000 fans came out for Fan Appreciation Day at Clemson Memorial Stadium, according to Clemson sports information officials. About 8,000 fans came last year, but the attendance increased this year due to excitement over head coach Dabo Swinney’s first full season, said Van Hilderbrand, assistant athletic director for events. Mickey this was in todays Anderson-Independant Mall.Last year seemed to have a larger crowd with that said in my opinion. Thanks Mickey for your coverage of Tiger Sports.

Razz -

All In is for all the grey area in between your two scenarios...If he is very successful, everyone will be singing his praises, and if he looses every-game everyone will be calling for his ouster. Those are a given. The point is, when do you change your position...ALL IN means you are more inclined to support Dabo and the team when things are not going so well...that is all. It is OK if you are not all in, but it does mean something for those of us that are all in.

Chris,

I just googled the 2008 fan appreciation day and they said 2,000 last year. Guess they were wrong but their headlines said 2K.

I'm with 74TIGER. I mean, I want to win every game and a national title as much as the next guy, but I understand that might not happen this year.

The truth is, I don't mind losing, when we're trying. Losing "bowden style" was so hard because it didn't seem like CTB or anyone else really cared. If we go down swinging, I can handle that. The way with lost with Bowden was so demoralizing.

I'm with Chriswinsalways, I'm ALL IN!

Spot the ball. I can't help it, the guy inspires me. I don't think I'm alone. Am I drinking the koolaid on big winnings? Not really, I know our range is probably 7 to 11 wins this year. We're heard of all that talent and watched them go 7-6 so many times. Maybe, just maybe, he can deliever on the promise of talent. Go Dabo!

The were more people there but not that many more. I've been the past 3 years and the crowd was larger but not by 13,000. What was different was that this year the Dabo line was as long as the Spiller/Ford line. Also the attitude of the fans is different. Whether we win 11 or loose 11 this year it seems to me that the coaches, players and MOST of the fans all have a better, team oriented attitude. Maybe I've full of orange kool aid but I'm glad for the change and I think Dabo can do great things at Clemson if us fickle fans will give him the chance.

PokerTiger: If a fan being "all-in" is a matter of personal opinion with lots of shades of grey, then to me it's just irrelevant.
