Friday E-Mail Bag

Friday E-Mail Bag
Each Friday I publish your comments and answer your questions. To submit a comment or questions please e-mail me at mickeyplyler@hotmail.com.

Hey Mickey,

I saw where you stated our record would be 8-4 this year. I agree but why? Why can't we win 10 games a year like Virginia Tech? How come Dabo has not beaten Paul Johnson at Ga Tech(3 of Dabo's 8 loses have been to Ga Tech) Be honest, do those teams have better coaches, better players, more administration support? What will it take to win 10 games at Clemson.

Thanks
Doug

Doug,
The reason Clemson has not won 10 games like Virginia Tech is because Tech has been better than the Tigers. Frank Beamer and his staff have established their program and do it as well as anyone could in Blacksburg. Because of their success, they have tremendous support. Paul Johnson has a terrific offense and inherited some great players but I don’t think Georgia Tech will win 10 games this year. I think Dabo has a chance to win 10 soon. He did win nine last year which was his first full year. But it will be easier to win more if he got full support.

Mickey,
I have a hypothetical situation I would like your opinion on. What if Clemson eliminated all of it's sports except for Football, Basketball, and Baseball, and kept enough women's sports to meet title nine requirements (I'm not saying I want this to happen, just curious for hypothetical purposes). Essentially, all of the revenue would still be the same because the money comes from ticket sales, booster contributions, and TV money from these 3 sports, but the costs of operation are reduced because of less scholarships, facility upkeep, training staff, administration, and tutoring. How do you think this scenario would change the success and culture of Clemson Athletics?

Go Tigers!
Seth

Seth,
Your e-mail is one of the most interesting I have ever received. This is a fascinating topic. There would be bottom line benefits financially because cost would be cut but the revenue would not drop as much. This would be a bad day for me personally though. I enjoy Clemson golf. I love Clemson track meets. They add to the Clemson experience and I would miss them greatly.

Mickey,

I have been wondering why Clemson doesn't take a little more time introducing each player on Senior Day before they run down the hill for the final time. Why not just start the whole process a little earlier (only maybe 10 minutes), and let's hear a little more about each players accomplishments before they run down the hill for the final time, other than just hearing only their name? I am sure enough info could be scrounged up for even those players who rarely played (at least how many letters they have earned, any practice awards they have received, # of plays they appeared for, special teams tackles, academic achievements, etc), not to mention some of the accolades of the star players. For instance I would have liked to have heard all the ACC and Clemson records CJ Spiller earned (okay maybe not all of them, we might still be sitting in Death Valley waiting for kick off against UVA). And at the end of all that something like "Ladies and Gentlemen one of the greatest to ever put on the Orange and White, CJ Spiller". I think that would be an awesome way to get the crowd even more fired up than we usually get during that moment, not to mention it would honor the player and their family, and all it would only take a few minutes extra time. Seems like it would be easy to make happen.

Thanks,

Rob

Rob,
I don’t mind your idea. I will forward your e-mail to Jon Seketa who is in charge of the procedure. I like the fact that you saw a way to better the process and came up with a solution. Thanks for the e-mail. Maybe they will consider your idea.

Sorry I was unsigned...I am Bacnblk...A Rabid Female Gamecock fan!

Sorry I asked you if you had looked in the mirror, I have looked for pictures of you on line and can't find any, and actually now that I have calmed down, you sound like a nice looking man.....I think you are a great father to Ryan, my husband is a tater (Clemson Fan) and told me all about it. Quite a story.

I don't know why anyone wouldn't be jealous of Spurrier, look at his bank account, his trophy case and his speaking fees! Heck I am jealous of the man! I also have great respect for him. I sure did hate and say really ugly words about him when he was standing on the sidelines at Florida, beating the Gamecocks black and blue instead of black and garnet. He had this smirk I just hated, but now for some reason, its just cute as heck!!! Must be the colors he now wears!

Take care, I do listen to you and when people get in my car and hear what I am listening to on the radio, they say, geeze, you really are crazy aren't you? Guess no one knows many females like me!

Go Cocks...2010 National Champions!! Baseball DOES COUNT!!!

Bacnblk

Bacnblk,
Thanks for writing back. Also thanks for the kind words about Ryan. He is a miracle and I love sharing his story. It took a lot for you to write back and I thank you for answering. Congrats on the national title. I think the best team won. But I still am not jealous of Spurrier or anyone because of money. I hope everyone makes as much as they can and am happy for them if it makes them happy.

Hi Mickey,

I enjoyed your blog today, "The Magic Number." While I think most people aspire for their team to have a balanced attack, I agree that a running game is critical. With the likely departure of Kyle Parker, I think our overall win/loss record will go down simply because Boyd will likely make some freshmen mistakes (e.g., throwing into coverage). However, Boyd is likely to increase our ability to run the ball because he is much more of a rushing threat than Parker. So, it is possible that we may increase our rushing attempts per game from 35 to 40 with Boyd under center (That number probably increases even more unless our WRs find a way to catch the ball), but not necessarily increase our win total in 2010.

Please give my best to Ryan. I hope you and Ryan get a chance to attend some Yankee games.

Kirk

Kirk,
I agree with your possible scenario. It is very possible that the Tigers will have to run the ball more but have fewer wins in 2010. Tajh Boyd has a bunch of ability but freshmen quarterbacks have an adjustment period. Hopefully he will make a quick transition. Thanks for the kind words about Ryan.
