Mickey,
And had a little extra info, that even you may not know. David Bibee who is now with Middle TN was the QB of Bristol Tennessee High School in the early 70s and (as I recall) during the ‘71 season that team won the Mythic National Championship for High School Football. I was in Jr. High at the time in Bristol and attended every game that season including the state championship game against Covington that THS won 52-0. If you see David, tell him that George Buchanan says hello. My father (Dr. Tal Buchanan, now deceased) was the team doctor for that team and I know David’s older brother Hal from the Bristol Country Club years ago. (Hal was also a starting catcher at the University of TN in the 1970s). Nice to see a few Bristol boys make good.
George
George,
Thanks for the information. I don’t do not know David but will see him at the stadium today and will tell him. I remember David when he was here and also when he was at South Carolina. I will tell him hello.
Mickey, is it true that Bowden is getting bit by the coaching bug again? My kneejerk response is “what program would take him?” But I got to thinking and there’s one school I believe he’d be perfect for – Southern Methodist. No joke. I think he’d be a good fit for a number of reasons.
1. He’d run a clean program. Not that they don’t run one now but he definitely wouldn’t revert back to late 1980s scandals. Running it clean is a must at SMU.
2. SMU could really use a program builder like Bowden. They have stunk since the death penalty 20 years ago and I think Bowden is just the guy to get it back on track to the road to glory.
3. He’d be back in C*USA, where he had his only big success. He could possibly win another C*USA title. That would be huge for his résumé.
4. He could build up recruiting like none of his predecessors, and given he’s in a talent-rich state (Texas) he could quite possibly better go up against the Big XII powerhouses and TCU in that state than SMU’s previous coaches given his experience at a BCS school. He would better know how to compete with those programs on the recruiting trail.
Sure, he may go to UCF since it’s local. But if he went to SMU, there is a huge upside he wouldn’t get in Orlando -- not only would the Mustangs get a coach who could make them winners in short work and could help raise C*USA’s perception as a non-BCS conference, but Bowden could salvage his reputation if he went there by raising a once-powerful football program from the ashes, like Tedford has done at Cal or Bellotti at Oregon. He could end up being a legend of sorts at Dallas. Thoughts?
Marc
Marc,
You make some very valid points and about Bowden’s candidacy. The only hole with your theory is that SMU just paid June Jones a ton of money to leave Hawaii. I always thought Bowden would never coach again but some think differently. If he does, I think he could find the right fit. Thanks for bringing up the valid points.
Mickey,
Good job on the blog. I have a quick question....who decides how they paint the field, and is there any possibility of them going back to the way they painted it in the late 80s? Call me old fashioned but I liked that color scheme better than the current one, and particularly liked the block letters.
I am still keeping Ryan and your family in my prayers. Yall have a great story and are an inspiration to many.
Tiger Fan
Tiger Fan,
Thanks for the prayers. Ryan is amazing and his recovery is so inspirational. I know the guys that paint the field but I am not sure who decides the color scheme. I will inquire and hopefully get some info for you next week.
Mickey,
First I enjoy the blog. Thanks for the work that you do.
Given William Perry's new medical condition, as well as his financial situation, it is good to see people like Ditka helping him out. Has the university done or have anything planned to help? Something like the Orange and White game donation, but during a home game, or even something as simple as a visit from cheerleaders/mascot/ players/coaches would be a great show of support. Few players were as beloved by fans as Perry. I'm sure many would love to be able to help in a time of need.
Also, can you give any details into the interim soccer head coach situation. How rare is it to have an interim coach start the season in a non-revenue sport in college. It seems really odd to me, as well as not being good for recruiting. Why didn't the admin hire a coach after they fired Adair, they had time didn't they? The Adair firing seemed completely unnecessary btw.
Longtime Tiger
Lonesome Tiger,
I know Woody McCorvey has been involved with the Perry family but I am not sure what future plans are to help. I do think Michael Dean wants to get more involved in Clemson as well. On the soccer front, it is no secret that I was extremely disappointed in how the university handled Trevor’s situation. The entire mess has been mishandled. I have no idea what they want to do but the interim deal cannot work for the entire season. This has been a disaster.
Hey Mickey,
Are they having the Tiger Walk this year? If so, do you know what time?
Thanks,
Harrison
Harrison,
The team will participate in Tiger Walk again this year. I think this is a terrific idea and appreciate you asking. The team should be there at 3:55. I would get there early to get a better view.
In Wednesday's practice report, TigerNet reported that Dabo said, “’We were much better today. I think we were ready to concentrate on someone else. We really focused on preparation for Middle Tennessee today and the team was ready for that." And The State reported, "After using Monday’s practice for game-planning, Tuesday’s theme was physical play. Swinney said the rest of the week will return to game-planning."
If the team was game-planning on Monday and then ready to concentrate on game-planning for "someone ELSE" (namely MTSU) on Wednesday, then I'm guessing that the team was game-planning for GT prior to Tuesday. Does that seem likely, or is it more likely that I'm just reading way too much between the lines?
Speaking of which, in a recent ACC preview show, one of the analysts (I think it was coach Phillip Fulmer) said that the teams who play GT very early in the season were fortunate to be able to spend part of camp preparing for GT's option. Thoughts?

RazzMaTazz,
I think the secret is out that the Tigers prepared some for Georgia Tech some in the pre-season. There is a lot of fundamental work and they obviously spent time on Middle Tennessee but they did get into some Georgia Tech.
I do think it an advantage to play Tech early. Their offense is based upon a lot of timing and they play better later in the season.
