Drayton Melton

Drayton Melton
Sorry I am late with the blog today and have to be short because of busy day ahead. Last night I got a phone call from Tim and Stacey Fowler who were wanting to help a friend.

Their son, Owen, plays flag football in the Clemson-Central Rec system and was coached by Joey Melton. Joey is a guy that coaches every sport every year and has always given to our community. Joey needs our help today.

The Melton’s have five kids and times have been hard as Joey has lost his job by no fault of his own like so many in this tough economy. This week things got even tougher. Their 11-year old son, Drayton, had to be taken to the emergency room in Easley Monday night. They were shocked to find out Drayton had MRSA and was rushed to MUSC in Charleston. Drayton’s liver was failing and he was put on a waiting list for a new liver. He benefitted from a miracle as he was a match from a donor and his life was spared.

A 12 hour surgical procedure took only seven hours and most of the signs were good as of this morning.

But the news was not over though. The Melton’s need our help. They have had an incredibly difficult time financially and have no health insurance. They were broke and did not have enough money to fill their car in order to get back to the upstate to get clothes and supplies for their long stay in Charleston.

Stacey called the radio show this morning and people began responding. The Town Hall in Central has been taking donations from locals all day. Stacey Fowler and Susan Batson are meeting with BB&T today to set up an account where people can donate.

We are having a remote in Clemson tomorrow morning for the grand opening of the Clemson Chic-fil-a and people wanted to get involved.

Things began to evolve quickly on the show. I did not have a significant amount of money to make a difference so I said I would donate my prized Joe DiMaggio signed baseball to be auctioned off to help raise money. My friend who gave me the ball a couple of years ago, Jon Christianson, said he wanted to donate memorabilia he owned. He donated a Willie Mays signed ball, a Willie McCovey signed jersey, a Stan Musial signed jersey and a Derek Jeter signed bat. We will auction each item off from 6 AM until noon tomorrow. You can tune to WCCP 104.9 FM for Rush Hour and Cruise Control in the morning to bid and listen to the highest bids. He shows can also be heard on www.wccpfm .com. You can bid by calling in or e-mailing me at mickeyplyler@hotmail.com. We are setting up a paypal account for payments. Also 100% of the money will go to the Meltons.

So many people have gotten involved in this and I want to thank all of those who have already given. Also I will update with details as they become available. Thanks and God Bless.
