Hi Mickey,
I really like your enthusiasm for Coach Purnell, the basketball team and the future of the basketball program. However, I can't help but feel some real apprehension about the game on Friday night. I worry about our free-throw shooting and our overall shooting percentage. Will the team that beat Duke show up or will the team that lost to UNC-Charlotte show up? I guess it is hard to entirely escape my memories of Clemson Basketball BP (Before Purnell). Thanks for your blog!
Kirk
Kirk,
I think you it is justified to be apprehensive about the game tonight. Usually 12-seeds do very well in the first round and Villanova is a threat. Scottie Reynolds will present a challenge as will the Wildcats quickness. However, I trust this team and I think Clemson is extremely confident coming in. There are no guarantees in the NCAA tournament (except for the 16-seed vs. 1-seed) but I feel good about this one.
Mickey -
What a weekend for Clemson hoops! So great to see. I have not been this excited about basketball since my freshman and sophomore years at Clemson when the team was coached under RB until he "took off".
Anyway, this may seem like an odd question (and possibly one you cannot answer), but do you have any idea where I might be able to get a golf cart in Clemson colors? Is there a distributor down that way that sells carts?
I need to replace one that I currently have, so why not support the Tigers when I do?
I know this may not be your area, but I also know that you are a Clemson man so I figured I would check.
Any information you might have would be appreciated. Go Tigers!!
Eric
Eric,
I don’t know of anyone but I am putting this e-mail in the Friday e-mail blog and I guarantee we will get a few responses. I will publish any information I come across from readers and hopefully we can get you what you need. Thanks.
Mick,
You mentioned on your radio show this morning that Coach K went on the Clemson team bus following the Clemson win on Saturday to congratulate/wish them good luck? Is this correct? I’ve never been a Coach K fan, but if that is true then that is admirable. Can you let me know what happened? Thanks,
Wes
Wes,
I read the blog by Dave Glenn that claimed that but Oliver Purnell said that is not exactly what happened. The way I understand it, Coach K did not formally address the team on the bus but did come by and speak to Purnell and his wife and a coach or player or two.
Mickey,
Have you ever heard of a LB from Reynolds HS here in Asheville by the name of Cabral? Is he on our radar? 6’2” 220lbs.
Houston
Houston,
I have not seen anything yet but will contact a few in North Carolina to see if I can find out anything on him and others at AC Reynolds. Thanks for the heads up.
Mickey,
Is it just me and maybe I am wrong but it seems that Coach Leggett does not recruit the state(SC) very hard. USC seems to always have more local players on their team and some were Clemson fans. USC does have a good baseball program and if they can play for them we should be after them too. What is your opinion?
Thanks,
Don
Don,
Jack Leggett recruits South Carolina but obviously not as much as South Carolina has. Clemson does not have the number of players that USC ahs from the state. The Tigers recruit the top players from our state but South Carolina seems to take a higher number of players.
Hi Mickey,
For years and years, Clemson University seemed to be pleased with the performance of the baseball team under Coach Wilhelm because they dominated the ACC. However, we could never really do much on a national level. It seems to me that it may be time to find someone else to lead the Tigers. I am slightly influenced by the poor performance of the team thus far in 2008, but I also am looking at the big picture. Jack Leggett has done a very good job, but it seems to me that we are not likely to win the College World Series under his leadership. Isn't the goal to win it all? I do not want us to be a team, like the Braves, that become content (and complacent) with winning division (ACC) championships. I would appreciate your thoughts. Thank you.
Kirk
Kirk,
I would love to win the ACC championship this year! Actually Clemson has won the ACC only twice under coach Leggett so I would love to get to that level. Getting to Omaha is important and I would love to get a national title but the key is consistency. The more you get there, the better chance you have to win it. I think the program has been very good under Leggett but I must admit I am concerned about this season and the near future. However, every time we get concerned about the baseball program, Jack and his staff out together an answer by winning. I am confident this program will be back.
