Mickey,
Don't you think we should hand the ball off to James Davis 30 times against Virginia Tech on Saturday if we are going to win the game? I look at the Hokies at the line of scrimmage and think we can do what we want, despite our performance last weekend at Georgia Tech. A healthy dose of JD = a big Clemson win. Your thoughts?
Phil in Piedmont
Phil,
I love James Davis and would love to see him carry it 30 times a game but that has not happened yet. Davis has carried the ball more than 24 times only three times in his Clemson career with 28 being his career high. I do agree that Tech’s defensive line is not as good as we first thought and Davis is healthy heading into the game. But Tech plays an eight-man front.
Mickey,
First of all let me say, i love your blog and i read it religiously everyday.
I just read your Wednesday Blog about Manning up. I think you're exactly correct. Every bit of it. My question is, what do you think our chances are of coming out and 'hitting VT in the mouth' as I and every Clemson fan would like to do? I mean, for a team like VT to come out and play Beamer ball is easy, because they created it. That's their personality. But our personality seems to be more 'smoke and mirrors'. I don't mean that in a gimmicky way, just that we use misdirection and things so much that we seem to run plays much like a magician does a magic trick. That's just my view, and it wouldn't be the first time I’ve been wrong. For a team like ours to play Beamer ball is so much harder. It's like an entire other persona.
I completely agree that the team that comes out and throws the first punch that lands will be the team to win. I just want to know what you think our chances are of coming out and being that team that lands the haymaker?
Thanks and as always,
GO TIGERS!
Wes
Wes,
Thanks for the e-mail. I am not sure Clemson can come out and outhit Virginia Tech but maybe if they just stood there toe-to-toe with them it would send a strong message. I do think Clemson can apply pressure to tech’s offense by being very aggressive. Clemson can get to Taylor’s confidence. I think some hard hits would get the crowd more involved also. I agree that Clemson is not the most physical team but it cannot let tech push them around Saturday.
Hey Mickey,
I only played some high school ball, but I think the main problem is (especially on offense against good teams) the schemes are to complex resulting in too many missed assignments, breakdowns, penalties, etc. Basically Rob Spence and Tommy are outthinking themselves trying to create mismatches and advantages. The schemes are so involved the offense struggles if defenses make an adjustment or a change right before the ball is snapped and the quarterback has problems audibling into the correct play in response.
I say this because it should not take a quarterback 3 years to learn the system. By the staffs own admission Cullen Harper did not have a good enough understanding of the offense last year to replace Proctor if he struggled. This year the staff says Korn has a lot to
learn yet. This is the primary reason they have not been able to get Korn on the field more this season even though he has more talent than Harper.
This is not a science experiment like the Mad Scientist Rob Spence is trying to make it - it is
blocking and tackling. It is pathetic to see the offense struggle like it did Saturday.
What is your take?
Mark
Mark,
I think the offense only struggled against Georgia Tech and you have to give the opponent some credit there. The schemes were not too complicated against NC State when they had over 600 yards. I agree that football is best when it is simple and the players can just react as opposed to having to think too much. I also think it comes down to execution and players and the scheme had little to do with nine dropped passes. The staff made a mistake last week when they changed the protection schemes a couple of times last week including too late in the week but the drops and special teams were the big issue.
Mickey,
Just read a quote from Michael Palmer that reads as follows:
“We can’t play with a mind-set to be afraid of having things spiral. We have to go out there with the same confidence we had two weeks ago and even Saturday. We have to know we’re good and can win and control what we can control.”
My question is not one to fan the flames of Anti-Bowden, but it is to simply inquire about the ability to motivate. Which coaches do you feel are the best motivators to help this team and these young players know that they are good and can win? The common perception is that Bowden is not a good motivator. Granted the example of after losing to Wake and then beating Florida State is used mostly by those to support Bowden. But looking at the years of coaching at Clemson and the games played/lost/won, I would like to know who motivates well and who needs improvement?
Thanks
Stuart
Bowden is not a yeller and a screamer. He is also not going to cuss and drop f-bombs to motivate but I am not sure that works all of the time either. I think the players are the biggest motivators on every team and motivation is best when it comes from the players first. Also the Rock and the Hill take care of motivation in the pre-game at home. On the road you may need a little extra and I am not sure which assistants are best for that job.
Mickey,
I have been curious about something for several years now and if it has ever been addressed on here, I missed it and I apologize.
Why do college coaches all over America allow the long hair hanging out of the helmet? I just can’t figure it out. I can only imagine what Bear Bryant, Woody Hayes and many more of the old time greats would have said to a player that looked like this. I seriously doubt Danny Ford or Joe Morrison would have allowed it. I know this is a new era, but why this? You know, I can’t think of one truly great “ difference-making “ player that you just could not win without, that has hair like this. What’s wrong with a coach making rules and telling a kid during recruitment “ I would love for you to come to Clemson, USC or wherever, but you will be expected to cut your hair and look like an athlete. Anyway, just curious. Your thoughts?
Regards,
Bill
Bill,
Times have changed and the long hair is back in style. I don’t have a huge problem with it. I am not sure coaches can afford to turn down kids because of personal appearance and certainly kids are more independent thinkers today. I am a New York Yankee fan and the Yankees are required to be “well groomed” but I would not run down Vlad Guerrero if he wanted to come to New York.
Mickey,
I have not seen anywhere where TB has said he would change our kicker? Why not? Are our other kickers injured?
Gerald
Gerald,
The kicker is the best they have right now. They had extensive competition throughout the spring and fall camp and he is better than all of the other kickers. None of the others are injured but none are as good as the current kicker.
Mickey,
Handling adversity during the heat of the battle is difficult. In fact, handling adversity after the battle is almost as difficult.....only because you have more time to adjust and "get your mind right"!
If you deal with adversity during the heat of the battle, perhaps the eight or so dropped passes becomes only one or two.....then you are first and ten and going for a touchdown or two instead of kicking field goals and missing 4.....and fumbles...... and blocked punts....and penalties.... and less than adequate blocking, etc, etc, etc......
Adversity can be like a "cancer"....spreading, regardless of treatment. What happened on Grant Field Saturday can only be .... "lessons learned" and let's move forward. This approach DEMANDS leadership from the top down.
The Tigers must have a much improved performance Saturday evening at HOME against VA TECH or we could be looking at a tumble of even greater proportions than last November !!
I still think this TEAM (that includes coaches and players, as it should) is capable of handling adversity, both in the heat of the battle and after.
Play a solid game Saturday and get a victory.....get a week off to do some physical healing.....play a winnable Homecoming game and roll !!! Accomplish this and perhaps this team can get thru the toughest part of the'07 schedule (and yes, that includes Duke) and get to Jacksonville.
We shall see.......we shall see
Thanks for listening,
Dennis
Dennis,
I agree. This Saturday is a huge game. Thanks for your imput.
Mickey,
I have four questions concerning our coaches:
1) Why don’t we get any nationally rated tight-ends with Billy Napier as one of our most active recruiters?
2) Why don’t we get any nationally rated wide receivers with Dabo Swinney as one of our most active recruiters?
3) What has Rob Spence done at Clemson to be known as the “mad scientist”? I doesn’t seem that he can adjust game plans to what the opponents do - ,ie. Virginia Tech, Maryland, South Carolina, Kentucky, and Georgia Tech.
4) Why is the quarterback so sacred to Rob Spence that the starting quarterback can’t sit for a series to see what the opposing defense is doing? It seems that a second team quarterback could possibly do better than a struggling first string quarterback. This isn’t a call for Willy Korn or against Harper, just a question concerning coaching philosophies.
Chasn79
Chasn79,
Thanks for the e-mail. Questions 1 and 2 can be answered together because each position coach recruits a regional territory and not a position. For example, Billy Napier does not just recruit tight ends. Instead Napier recruits North Carolina, certain regions of South Carolina and Georgia. He recruits players of all positions within his region. Dabo Swinney has his region and recruits players of all positions in his area.
Question 3-I will take each game individually. Against Maryland the Tigers moved the ball and failed in the red zone. They had 400 yards of total offense but failed all four times in the red zone.
Virginia Tech was a tough matchup because of Tech’s scheme (8-man front) and the atmosphere. Clemson did not play well and the scheme may have had something to do with that but tech was a top-five defense last year so I can give a little credit to the opponent there.
Against South Carolina they scored 28 points and had a two touchdown lead in the second half. I think the defense giving up 500 yards and 31 points was the issue there so that was not Spence’s deal.
I totally put blame on the offensive staff for the Kentucky game as the game plan stunk. Spiller and Davis were not involved in the game plan and I think the offensive staff deserved criticism there.
Against Georgia Tech I cannot blame the staff for nine dropped passes and 22 points given away on special teams. Spence did not lose that game Saturday.
In summary, I think it is fair to blame the staff when they deserve it but it is not their fault all of the time. It is their responsibility but not always their fault.
Question 4-I have no answer there. Their philosophy in the past is to not play two quarterbacks. I am not upset about not playing Korn Saturday but would have played him late against State.
