Overall Report Analysis-Grades and Comments:
Offense-Rushing
Interior running game- James Davis had success but he did not play a lot on Saturday and only had 12 carries. Davis’ injury and Tech’s defense were a major factor in limiting the interior running game.
Perimeter running game- Spiller could not get to the perimeter and the Jackets did a great job of pursuit on the edge. Clemson had zero success with any outside running game.
Option game-N/A.
Draws-N/A.
Short yardage running game- Clemson only had two short yardage situations and converted both.
Yards after contact- Tech was fantastic in this area as they tackled extremely well.
Offense-Passing
Pass protection- Poor. The Yellow Jackets blitzed time and time again and Clemson had few answers. Harper was sacked six times.
Underneath passing game- Clemson could not spring the big play because of Tech’s tackling. Harper was not as sharp on the underneath balls but give Tech credit here.
Intermediate passing game- Drops, drops and more drops. Clemson’s wide receivers have caught the ball extremely well all year but this effort was awful. I can’t remember more drops in one game.
Vertical passing game- Harper was sharp here with some beautiful throws but drops were a factor here also.
Screens- Clemson hit on a couple of wide receiver screens but I would have thought they would have used more as a pressure release.
Drops- They don’t keep school records in this category but this one would have challenged.
Yards after catch- Clemson broke a couple of tackles but for the most part this was a big winning effort by the Jackets linebackers and secondary.
QB throws on time- I thought Harper held the ball too long on a couple of throws.
Offense-Overall
First down yardage- Clemson lost first down. The Tigers had 27 first down plays and they were second and long 16 times.
Third down conversion- 8 of 20 is not terrible.
Big Plays- Last year the Tigers hit huge plays in the second half of this game but they had only six plays of more than 15 yards Saturday.
Trick plays- N/A
Defense-Overall
Tackling-Above average effort.
First down yardage- The Tigers were pretty good here. Of their 27 first down plays Clemson held Georgia Tech to less than four yards 17 times.
Third down conversion- Clemson held Tech to 5 of 15 on third down conversions.
Limit of Big Plays- Tech only had three plays of 15 or more yards.
Defense-Running game
Interior running game- The Jackets hurt Clemson with the counter play as Choice pounded the Tigers over and over again.
Perimeter running game- Clemson did a nice job of limiting GT here but this is not there strong point either.
Option game- N/A
Draws- Tech hit on a 32-yard run on third down in the fourth quarter that was the final nail.
Short yardage running game- Tech only converted two of their four short yardage runs.
Yards after contact- Choice broke a bunch of tackles to fall forward and gain the extra yards.
Defense-Passing Game
Pressure- Bennett only threw the ball 17 times so the Tigers did not have a lot of times to get after the passer.
Underneath passing game coverage- Tech was not successful in any part of their passing game.
Intermediate passing game coverage-Clemson was pretty good here.
Vertical passing game coverage- Tech had one big drop but the vertical game was not a factor.
Screens-The Jackets did not run a lot of screens.
Passes broken up- Sapp had the Tigers only pass break up.
Open field tackling- Clemson tackled well in the open field.
Special Teams
Kickoff returns- The Tigers have not been effective returning kickoffs in two years. The return men will not hit the wedge with a burst.
Kick off coverage- Excellent but they only kicked off twice. Once was a touch back and the other went only 19 yards.
Punt return/block- The fumble was the big news with this unit. That is basically a 35-yard turnover. Clemson’s last hope went out of the window with the fumble.
Punt coverage-Snap, protection, punt, coverage- Tech’s only touchdown came after the blocked punt.
Field Goals/extra points-snap, hold, protection, kick- One of five is awful. It is hard to miss four field goals and win a game but three of the four were 47 or more yards.
Overall Team
Energy, Enthusiasm, Leadership- I thought both teams came out flat.
Coaching
Emotionally prepared- I am not sure this team was ready to play emotionally or mentally.
Game plan- The offensive game plan was not effective but drops, sacks and penalties had a lot to do with that.
Adjustments- Clemson could not adjust to Tech’s blitz packages.
Personnel-Davis got banged up and this hurt the personnel groupings. I thought the staff made the right call by not putting Korn in this contest.
Time outs-Poor. Clemson had to use two timeouts early in the second half.
