Overall Report Analysis-Grades and Comments:
Offense-Rushing
Interior running game- This did not work Saturday for only one reason and that is because Clemson did not try to run the ball. When they gave it James Davis he was successful but the staff chose to pass the ball again this week.
Perimeter running game- C.J. Spiller and the perimeter game was shut down. Again the staff did not feed Spiller of Davis the ball but the Tigers did not get the running backs involved on the perimeter. Now Jacoby Ford had two decent carries on the perimeter.
Option game-N/A.
Draws-N/A.
Short yardage running game- Clemson was three out of four converting on short yardage.
Yards after contact- This was not the Tigers’ best effort. Usually Spiller can make you miss a little more than he did Saturday. Davis did break a few tackles.
Offense-Passing
Pass protection- The Paladins had five sacks and that cannot happen again but the protection was great on the other passes. It was hit or miss because other than the sacks Harper and Korn had time to throw.
Underneath passing game- Ford made another big play by taking the underneath route and turning it into a big gain.
Intermediate passing game- Furman played Robber coverage often and Harper took advantage by getting the ball outside to the receivers. Palmer got involved in the intermediate game.
Vertical passing game- Excellent. Harper hit Grisham with a beautiful ball and his throw to Kelly was the best of the season. The Tigers had five passes of 20 yards or more.
Screens- I have not seen the film but I don’t recall this being a huge part of the game plan.
Drops- The receivers had another good game catching the football. Anytime you complete 82% of your passes then receivers are catching the ball well.
Yards after catch- Ford had his usual effort and Spiller did after the catches as well.
QB throws on time- I thought Harper looked comfortable and threw it on time for the most part.
Offense-Overall
First down yardage- The running game suffered on first down with only six of 17 runs yielding four or more yards. Eleven times Furman held Clemson to two yards or less on first down when the Tigers ran the ball.
Third down conversion- Five of nine is very good. I think 55% is pretty good.
Big Plays- This offense has hit on the big play often the last two years and Saturday was another great example of that. Ten plays netted at least 14 yards.
Trick plays- N/A
Defense-Overall
Tackling-I thought the Tigers tackled better this week. There were fewer missed tackles.
First down yardage- The Tigers held the Paladins on the ground on first down but gave up too much through the air. Furman had only six first down runs of five or more but they were 12 of 14 passing on first down.
Third down conversion- The Paladins converted 8 of 18 third downs.
Limit of Big Plays- The Tigers gave up five plays of 14 or more yards.
Defense-Running game
Interior running game- I thought Clemson contained Jerome Felton well.
Perimeter running game- Furman gained some yards on the outside running game. Kendall had a 26 yard run that hurt.
Option game-I thought the Tigers played the option pretty good over the course of the game. I saw few busted assignments.
Draws- Much better this week.
Short yardage running game- Furman only made five of their 10 short yardage situations when they ran the football.
Yards after contact- I thought Clemson limited Furman here with the exception of a couple of runs.
Defense-Passing Game
Pressure- With the exception of a couple of Ricky Sapp efforts and Scotty Cooper Clemson was not able to pressure the passer. Zero sacks.
Underneath passing game coverage- Most of the efforts were poor. Furman gained four, five and six yards almost every time the got the ball to their receivers on the perimeter. Haydrian Lewis did make a couple of plays on short passes.
Intermediate passing game coverage-Awful. Furman quarterbacks were able to sit in the pocket and hit open receivers all day.
Vertical passing game coverage- Furman did not try to stretch the field too often.
Screens-The Paladins did not run as many screens as I would have thought. Instead the just flipped the ball out to the wide outs in the flats.
Passes broken up- Michael Hamlin had two PBUs while Antwon Murchison, DeAndre McDaniel and Chris Clemens had the other three.
Open field tackling- Not as good as the FSU game but not as bad as the Monroe game.
Special Teams
Kickoff returns- Furman kicked short and away from Spiller and Ford.
Kick off coverage- Another great effort. This is the most improved unit on the field. Buchholz kicks it great and coverage is excellent.
Punt return/block- Furman shanked most of their punts so there were no returns.
Punt coverage-Snap, protection, punt, coverage- Excellent on all aspects.
Field Goals/extra points-snap, hold, protection, kick- Again everything looked great for the third straight week.
Overall Team
Energy, Enthusiasm, Leadership- I was a little disappointed with the enthusiasm but this was not a huge issue.
Coaching
Emotionally prepared- This was not a major issue. The offensive line was challenged and the staff was pleased with how physical they were.
Game plan- I can understand the offensive plan. They wanted to get Harper some confidence and it has worked. I have no idea what the defensive game plan was. If you have better athletes on defense than Furman has on offense then I don’t understand not being more aggressive.
Adjustments- Both sides of the ball adjusted well.
Personnel-This was not a factor this week.
Time outs-This was not a factor this week.
