Friday E-Mail Bag
Each Friday I publish your comments and answer your questions. To submit a comment or questions please e-mail me at mickeyplyler@hotmail.com.

Mickey,
Great blog... read it every day.

I graduated from Clemson in '02, so Jeff Davis WAS just a name from the '81 team to me, but after reading what you wrote (among other articles) about him I have more respect for him than any other Tiger in our storied history.

I want to get a Jeff Davis jersey made. He was number 45 correct? Here is where I really need your help... what did the name read across the back of his jersey:

- Davis
- J. Davis
- Jeff Davis
- (blank)

If you know that info, or know some where I could get that info it would be greatly appreciated Mickey.

Keep up the good work.

Adam

Adam,
Thanks for the e-mail. Jeff was number 45. Both the home and away jerseys had the names across the back of the jersey during Jeff’s playing days. The way I remembered Jeff’s jersey was J. Davis. I could not find a picture in the press guide but I knew Billy Davis played the same years so I thought it had to be J. Davis. I then called the football office and Ren Windham was nice enough to walk down the hall and said the one in the case in the McFadden Building says J. Davis. Therefore, I am 99.999% sure that J. Davis is correct. Great idea so let me know how it turns out. Can I suggest Mr. Knickerbocker to do it for you?

Mickey,

Just read your May 10 Blog. The Judge is a truly inspiring story that is ongoing.

I had the pleasure of meeting Jeff Davis one summer in the late 70's. I was working in Greensboro, NC at the time and was managing a trucking terminal.
Jeff worked the night shift as a freight handler. He only worked for me that one summer and it was for only about 7 weeks, but, I promise you, he left a very positive impression on a large number of folks. Even then, he had the infectious smile we still see today and displayed maturity, leadership and a moral character that was most unique for a teenager.......we all knew even then that Jeff Davis was someone special.......and WOW ! Is he ever someone special !
Thanks for the great blog !!

Dennis

Dennis,
Thanks for the story. I will share it with our readers.

Mickey,
Mickey – really liked your blog about AD for a day…probably agree with most of them. Some of what I would do:

1. 12 game football schedule…get rid of the La-Monroes, C. Michigan’s. La Tech’s. On years when we do not play Duke, we play ONE Div 1-AA team and it must be either Furman or Citadel. Schedule Georgia every year with two of the likes of Auburn, Ala, Texas A&M, Notre Dame, etc. Won’t play us on a home and home schedule? Go to their place, BUT let it be known to the world that they are the ones who would not come to Death Valley. I want us to compete against the best, so that when we beat the best, there is no question we are the best. I would rather have a 7 – 5 record against a tough schedule than a 10 – 2 against a patsy schedule. Fans will come, fans will travel, and top athletes will sign.

2. After being at the baseball game in Greenville the other night…there must be a Palmetto tournament. Incredible atmosphere.

3. Baseball: 12 game series with South Carolina and a 6 game series with GA. Bring back the 12 game fall-ball

4. Basketball: 2 games with South Carolina and 2 with GA…keep the coaches intact and stay the course.

5. Put students around the entire floor for basketball. I graduated in 77…alumni need to give up those seats to students.

6. Kriese and Blackman recognition is long over due

7. Quit my AD job after my one day and become President of the NCAA for a day and get rid of all their stupid rules….probably need a year for that.

John

John,
Good luck with fixing the NCAA. Clemson is much simpler to fix. I do like the idea of more students on the floor in basketball games. I think Littlejohn can become a pit again.

Mickey,
Dear Mickey,

My name is Eric and I am with the Bushpigs, the group underneath the flagpoles next to the Cheapseats at the baseball games. Our group is writing in response to your last blog entitled, "We Have Failed," and we agree that getting youths involved in baseball is important to the community. We would like to help by buying a set of tickets to a Clemson baseball game and donating them to a local charity or youth group. We want local youth to appreciate the game as much as us by giving back to the community. If you could give us some local youth organizations, we would greatly appreciate that. You have done a wonderful job in the
Clemson community by sharing your passion of not only sports but also Clemson itself, and we would like to be a part of that. Thank you for your time.

Go Tigers,
The BUSHPIGS

Eric,

I think you guys are awesome. Thanks for the kind words. Great idea on the tickets for next season. We have so many great charities here in the upstate but I am going to publish this on our e-mail section in hopes of drawing more attention to your cause. (Editor’s note: If anyone has an idea for the charity for the tickets please let me know.) Please stay in contact with me and lets get this done before next season. Again, great idea and thanks.

Mickey,

I liked many of your suggestions for football with Georgia and other regional and national opponents. I also agree with your ideas for regional opponents in basketball.

As AD for a Day, I would also schedule a meeting with Coach Tommy Bowden to simply tell him that the Clemson faithful expect and deserve better from their head football coach. I would also ask him to eliminate the PR spin such as "we are five plays away...." Enough, already. I would say, "Coach Bowden, you need to take more personal responsibility for the performance of the team. Please refrain from diverting attention away from yourself to other things. It is time to get the job done!"

I would also schedule a meeting with Coach Oliver Purnell. I would tell him, "Coach, we really like the improvements your teams have had from year-to-year. In addition to their overall performance, can you do something about the d#@* free throw percentage. It is ridiculous; please fix this problem ASAP; it is worth at least two more wins per year!"

My final meeting would be with Coach Leggett. I would simply ask him if he really thinks he will ever win a College Baseball World Series at Clemson. If not, then I would ask him to step down, gracefully, so that we could find a guy to get the job done....... hmmmm, maybe the guy from Vanderbilt?

Kirk

Kirk,

Is your last name Steinbrenner? I do think it is proper to explain to your employees your expectations. Your tone does have a little Steinbrenner in it though.

Mickey,

I'm enjoying the blogs. Good stuff. For the comments, what a bunch of knuckleheads are posting. I'm going to quit reading below the George Coleman Ford ad because I can't take the stupidity--especially the ones yesterday about Clemens.

Hope you and the family are doing well.

A Tiger in Newberry

Tiger,

Thanks for the nice words about the blog. I think it is OK to express your opinion. Everyone is entitled to it and I like sharing ideas. I do not like the idea of a couple of “knuckleheads” ruining the experience for others. I see nothing wrong with expression of ideas but if it is offensive then it needs to be toned down. We have between 30,000 and 50,000 readers on a lot of days on the blog and I want it to be a meaningful piece on most days. Disagreeing with me or a blog is perfectly OK and even welcomed. But I would love to exclude the personal stuff. I am as guilty as anyone and will try to keep a closer eye on it in the future.

In fact, I would like to change the comment section. I would like to have more opinions, positive and negative. I am going to start participating more on the comments also. I think exchanging thoughts are great and encourage more participation. One problem with the internet is that 50,000 people can participate but a few nameless cowards can be distracting and can take away from the others’ experience. I would liken it to someone talking loud behind you at the movie theater.

Thanks for reading the blog everyday and please give the comment section one more try.

Mickey,

I am afraid that I will have to disagree with you on your premise in your recent article, "We Have Failed." Frankly, I think MLB has failed America. Many people are disgusted with this sport. The steroid scandal is ridiculous. Barry Bonds is a disgrace to any MLB player that had to struggle through 162 game seasons without the help of cream, injections, or pills. The guaranteed contracts that have no link to performance frustrate the average person that is held accountable every day for their job performance. Baseball no longer has integrity. I cannot support a sport or a commissioner that do not have integrity.

Best Regards,

Kirk

Kirk,

Major League Baseball has more than its fair share of problems. I was speaking about the sport. I was defending college baseball. I will not defend steroids or any other major issue in MLB but I will defend the sport. It has to be better than professional rowing.
