Overall Report Analysis-Grades and Comments:
Offense-Rushing
Interior running game-Excellent. The offensive line played its best game in years. The Tiger backs had huge holes thanks to the offensive line getting to the second level. The backs ran hard and made nice yards after contact. Best rushing game in years.
Perimeter running game-Outstanding. The tight ends and tackles did a nice job of springing the backs on the perimeter.
Option game-N/A.
Draws-The Tigers did not have to depend on too many draws.
Short yardage running game-Excellent. Short yardage and goal line packages looked dominating.
Yards after contact-Excellent. This was another huge bright spot. All four backs ran extremely hard and broke tackles.
Offense-Passing
Pass protection-Protection was outstanding but the Tigers did not have to pass the ball too often. The o-line did a nice job when they did chose to pass.
Underneath passing game-Very good. The Tigers threw and caught the ball well once again this week.
Intermediate passing game-Again, when they chose to throw the ball, all of the units played well.
Vertical passing game-Nice completion to Thomas Hunter down the middle and downfield towards the UNC sideline.
Screens-The few screens the Tigers threw worked like everything else.
Drops-I did not see any drops Saturday.
Yards after catch-Another huge effort by Rendrick Taylor and Thomas Hunter.
QB throws on time-Proctor looked poised and composed. He looked great in the pocket.
Offense-Overall
First down yardage-The best all year. Fifteen times the Tigers had eight yards or more on first down.
Third down conversion-The percentages were about average but the Tigers concverted key third downs.
Big Plays-Clemson had long sustained drives instead of the big plays for the most part. They still had 18 plays of 10 or more yards.
Trick plays-No need for trick plays when the O-Line dominates like this.
Defense-Overall
Tackling-Much improved. McGill is a hard back to bring down but Clemson tackled well.
First down yardage-15 of UNC’s 18 first down chances went for four yards or less. They had two plays of six yards and one of 10 yards. Great defensive effort. The Tar Heels had a little more than 2 yards per first down.
Third down conversion-Great effort here. UNC converted only one of 10 third downs.
Limit of Big Plays-UNC did not have a play fo 20 yards or more.
Defense-Running game
Interior running game-This was a key. McGill was shutdown the entire game and the defense got UNC in great down and distances because of it.
Perimeter running game-Good pursuit and tackling.
Option game-N/A
Draws-The Tigers did a great job of sniffing out the draw and getting McGill to the ground.
Short yardage running game-UNC had only one third and short the entire game.
Yards after contact-Outstanding effort of limiting the Heels here.
Defense-Passing Game
Pressure-
Underneath passing game coverage-The Heels were just 7 of 23 passing for only 96 yards.
Intermediate passing game coverage-Good pressure and even better coverage.
Vertical passing game coverage-As good as the UNC wide receivers were, this was not a part of the game. The could not get behind the Tigers.
Screens-UNC did not a lot of screens.
Passes broken up-Great job by the secondary including Clemens, Lewis, Russell and Gilliam.
Open field tackling-Excellent. There was not a lot of room to run but the open field tackles were great.
Special Teams
Kickoff returns-The only return Clemson had went for only 11 yards.
Kick off coverage-Perfect. The kick off coverage team has done a great job the last two weeks. Chambers caused fumble was a key to the game.
Punt return/block-Clemson came close on a couple of blocks and the return game was above average.
Punt coverage-Snap, protection, punt, coverage-When you don’t punt it is great news. Clemson did not punt for the second time this season.
Field Goals/extra points-snap, hold, protection, kick-Great job. Great improvement.
Overall Team
Energy, Enthusiasm, Leadership-Clemson came ready to play and UNC did not. The Heels were flat and intimidated. The crowd was into it and did a nice job too.
Coaching
Emotionally prepared-Clemson has had letdowns in the past but the staff did a great job here.
Game plan-Outstanding on both sides of the ball. The offense pounded it and the defense did a nice job of suffocating UNC.
Adjustments-Neither had to adjust a lot because of the Heels lack of adjustments.
Personnel-Staff did a nice job of substituting and letting a lot of players play Saturday.
Time outs-This was not a factor.
