Friday Mail Bag

On Friday’s we publish your e-mails and answer your questions. You can send in a comment or question at mickeyplyler@hotmail.com

What have you heard about Zach Green this year? I have heard he is back, and will be a huge part of the Clemson offense this year at Tight End. You haven't mentioned him much. After that Miami game a few years back, I would think he has a strong shot at a starting spot. Your thoughts, sir?
Jeff (Atlanta, GA)

Jeff,
Zach has been through as much from an injury and illness standpoint as anyone at Clemson. I think it still takes time to recover and build strength. I think he is better suited at tight end and that is where he will stay. I think he will see the field more this year than he has so he has a chance to improve his status on the depth chart.

Mickey,
You and Walt are losing credibility. Any man, woman or idiot that thinks Steve Spurrier is the 40th best coach in the country is a fraud. If you agreed with him then I refuse to listen to your show. To be perfectly honest you lost a little bit of credibility with me when you ranked Clemson's wide receivers #1 in the ACC. Do you know how ridiculous that sounds? Look, I can understand that your audience is mainly Tiger fans, but you don’t have to kiss their butts at every opportunity. Be real every now and then. Were you one of the idiots that predicted Travian Roberson to be a Clemson commitment?

I don't mind listening to your show if you are slightly slanted toward the tigers, but when you and your crowd start catering to the Tigers, I and other Gamecock fans just will not listen. Even when you were more down the middle I thought you were cavalier with your recruiting reports. Now, I don’t think I would put much credibility in anything you report.

When it stops being credible, it stops being worth listening to.
JR Smith

Mr. Smith,
I will defend Walt until the end. Walt proves his knowledge every week. He has had three losing weeks in two years on the show. Only Pete Carroll has had a better two years. This is a guy that knows more about the game than anyone I have ever heard. Walt is the most knowledgeable football/basketball analyst on the planet. To say you will not listen any longer because of what he said about your coach is your choice. I never predicted Robertson to either USC or Clemson. As a Gamecock fan you better hope Spurrier is as good at what he does as Walt is at what he does. Too bad you will not get to hear him any longer.

Mickey,
I totally agree with Walt. I believe South Carolina (Blake Mitchell) will go through a sophomore slump. I have seen this before when a guy plays again the next year after having a great year. I believe South Carolina sneaked up on some teams but it will not be the case this year. Spurrier real have to really coach this year. I do not see it at South Carolina with the people they lost. Teams will prepare better for Mitchell this season.
Scott

Scott,
The good news is we will see soon enough.

Mickey,

Why do USC fans think Spurrier is the greatest coach ever? They act like the guy's Bear Bryant. Sure, Spurrier won a Nat'l Championship but so has an ex-Clemson farmer in Pickens.

Here's an interesting sociological question/experience for USC fans. Ask them if they could have 60 yr. old Spurrier as their coach for 3 years or Pete Carroll for a 20 yr contract.

I'll bet you that nearly all of them would pick Spurrier.

WALLACE

Mickey,
Does the capacity you gave out include 'the hill'? I know the record capacity is 5 or 6 thousand greater than the previous stated capacity of 82,000.

Regan

Regan,
They had to go back and re-count seats and hill capacity. The new capacity includes the hill. The fire marshal has set limits on the overall number inside the stadium for safety purposes.

Mick,
Do you see the NCAA saying a team must win 7 games to be bowl eligible with the addition of the 12th game? I would like to see this. Most teams brought in a patsy to play that 12th game. What are your thoughts on this.

Thanks,

Jeff

Jeff,
Whether the NCAA mandates it or not, in my opinion no team should go to a bowl with a 6-6 record. However, we still have too many bowls also.

Hi Mickey! I am "TygerEye®" on TigerNet. I try to listen to your program EVERY day. You're an excellent sports analyst and we are blessed to have you on WCCP-FM!!! (-Any chance you will syndicate your program? LOTS of people statewide would love to hear your INFORMED opinions!!!)I missed parts of the first hour today. Do not know ifmy favorite athlete would qualify. He is Dr. RogerBannister. As a MEDICAL STUDENT at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington, Roger Bannister chose to use his lunch hour for a 9 minute jog to Paddington track, where he ran 10 X 400 m in about 60 sec. ea., with TWO minutes rest, then he RAN back to work. The whole procedure took 46 minutes, leaving him 14 minutes to eat his lunch!(=Imagine training as "a world class athlete" in medical school...!)At the time, nobody had ever run the mile in under 4 minutes. There was talk of a barrier, something like the sound barrier for airplanes. Then, on May 6, 1954,Dr. Bannister of England ran the first under 4 minute mile (3:59.4). Soon, several runners had broken the supposed 4-minute barrier. When ABC had the "goofy pro olympics" football, baseball and basketball players ALWAYS got skunked by mid to long range runners. Runners are simply the best athletes and that will transfer into ANY athletic pursuit.Famous Roger Bannister-ism:* "I DON'T WHISTLE BECAUSE I AM HAPPY, I AM HAPPYBECAUSE I WHISTLE." (=We control OUR OWN destinies.)Sir Roger Bannister M.D. was the first recipient ofSports Illustrated magazine's "Sportsman of the Year" award. He later became the first Chairman of the Sports Council (now calledSport England) and was knighted for these services in1975. Under his guidance and direction, central and local government funding of sports centres and other sports facilities was rapidly increased. He became Master of Pembroke College, Oxford, retiring in 2001.Thanks again, Mickey!-Ron

Ron,

I never heard some of those Banister stories. Thanks for the info. Thanks for the kind words also.

Mickey,

Do they have any plans to enclose the corners of the pie in the WEZ with any type of awning or overhang? I know at one point the construction plans had shown a white awning with an orange tiger paw? Any idea?

Thanks

Cole

Cole,
I have not asked that question but I will ask Billy D. the next time I see him. Great question.

Mickey,

The worksheet you shared with us on Monday is excellent. The second half of the worksheet is just kind of so to me, due to it being subjective. I really believe have something that would get us all talking if you posted your worksheet each Monday after games.

In fact, if you do not make it available I plan on filling in the blanks myself. Something I would like to see added would be total plays for the offense and defense, 3rd down conversion for the offense and defense, and yards per play for the offense and defense. Those may be in your stats somewhere and I over looked them, but those are important numbers for me when thinking about a team controlling a game.

First time I have ever dropped an email to you, so I'll take a moment to express how much I enjoy your blog and your show when I have the opportunity to listen. Keep up the good work and go Tigers!

Brandon

Brandon,

I will publish the worksheet each week. It should be interesting. I am interested to see how people will view it in the fall.
