Winning the Press Conference
I have been in this business long enough to know you don't have to win the introductory press conference to be successful.

When Bill Belichik was introduced as the Patriots' head coach I am sure he didn't light up the room. I have been in press conferences where he new coach wowed the media and those in attendance, but then went to be a huge failure. We have seen the boring introductory press conferences that didn't impress, yet on the field success soon followed. Winning the press conference is nice but it doesn't go on your record.

On Monday, I thought it was pretty clear Monte LeeMonte Lee

won the introductory press conference. Now let's see if that means success on the field.

I do think it was important for Lee to win Monday. Let's face it, he will not have a chance to win in front of a Clemson crowd until next February.

Lee was impressive. He had energy. He showed enthusiasm. He came across as confident and in control, but I was more impressed with the specifics of what he said.

The new coach said his players will play loose. That has been a major complaint among some fans and followers of this program. Former players have talked to me about playing tight at times. Baseball is a sport where the mind is as important as anything physical. Yogi Berra said the game is 90 percent mental and the other half is physical. The point is that you have to get out of your own way.

Another point that I noticed was how he embraced the Clemson family. One of the points some fans have had in recent years is a lack of connection with the community. At times Jack LeggettJack Leggett

appeared to alienate the fan base.

I liked the fact that Lee talked about the in-state rival, but did not obsess about it.

Finally, Lee talked about recruiting. He has retained Bradley LeCroyBradley LeCroy

and my guess is the recruiting efforts of this program just received a major injection of energy. Lee came across as a guy that has great relationships with high school coaches across this state. He talked about how his network is second to none in this state.

This program needs an upgrade in talent and recruiting is as important as ever. My impression is the Lee and LeCroy duo will be very effective on the road. I can see the personalities impressing moms, dads and prospects.

So Lee won on Monday. He had a little Dabo SwinneyDabo Swinney

feel to him. At times it sounded a lot like the head football coach at Clemson. I get the impression that he has a great chance to win on the field too, but my guess is that will happen in the long term more so than in the short term. He has his work cut out for him in year one of this rebuilding process. At least day one went well.
