Polls, Basketball, Super Bowl

Baseball Polls

Polls are not that important in college baseball because of the way the post season works, but I wanted to drop a note for some of the fans that track.

Clemson was ranked 13th in the Baseball America poll that came out yesterday.  This was much higher than the Collegiate Baseball poll that came out earlier, so I called around and asked some of my contacts about the disparity.  I was surprised to hear one coach tell me that collegiate baseball is more biased towards some schools and against others.  I went back and looked at some of the polls in recent years and found Clemson is usually ranked much higher in the Baseball America poll.

By the way, one coach I talked to said he agreed with Baseball America and thinks Clemson is one of the best teams in the country this season.  He was very high on Clemson's pitching depth.

Basketball

Clemson basketball is going through a tremendously difficult part of the schedule which includes several difficult road games.   Brad BrownellBrad Brownell
Head Coach

has said the most disappointing aspect of the past two games has been the intensity on the defensive end of the floor.

In last week's 33-point win over Clemson, Pittsburgh shot 56.3% from the field.  Sunday night North Carolina shot 55.4% from the field.  The Tar Heels made eight three pointers despite being one of the worst three point shooting teams in the country.

I agree with Brownell when he says the Tigers are not skilled enough to win on the road unless they play with great effort on the defensive end.  I was impressed with how hard Florida State and Wake Forest played on the defensive end of the court at Littlejohn earlier this season.  It will take that kind of effort moving forward.

Confidence may be the biggest opponent moving forward.  As I have said many times, this seven game stretch may take a lot out of the Tigers physically but I worry more about the mental makeup of this squad.  Losing by 33 and 19 can't do a lot for the confidence of a young team.

Jordan Roper is a great example of this.  He looks much more confident at home and has struggled in his last three road games.  Against Virginia Tech Roper went 1-6 from the field and 0-2 from three for only two points.  In the Pittsburgh game he went 2-5 from the field and 1-2 from three for six points.  Sunday night Roper went 0-3 from the field and 0-1 from three for one point at the free throw line.

In the past three road games Roper has gone 3-14 from the field and 1-5 from three while averaging three points per game.

Tigers in the Super Bowl

Byron Maxwell of the Seattle Seahawks will play in the Super Bowl and will attempt to become the 25th former Clemson Tiger to win a Super Bowl ring.  Clemson players have won 32 Super Bowls.

Dan Benish (1987 Redskins), Ty Davis (1986 Giants), Nick Eason (2008 Steelers), Steve Fuller (1985 Bears), Chris Gardocki (2005 Steelers), Andy Headen (1986 Giants), Tony Horne (1999 Rams), Terry Kinard (1986 Giants), Bill Mathis (1968 Jets), Dexter McCelon (1999 Rams), John McMakin (1974 Steelers), William Perry (1985 Bears), Archie Reese (1981 49ers), Wayne Simmons (1996 Packers), James Trapp (2000 Ravens), Anthony Waters (2009 Saints) and Antoine McClain (2012 Ravens) have won one Super Bowl ring each.

Dwight Clark won two with the 49ers in 1981 and 1984.  Bennie Cunningham won rings with the Steelers in 1978 and 1979.  Terrence Flagler won rings with the 49ers in 1988 and 1989.  Trevor Pryce won rings with the Broncos in 1997 and 1998.  Jim Stuckey won rings with the 49ers in 1981 and 1984 and Charlie Waters won titles with the Cowboys in 1971 and 1977.

The Tiger with the most Super Bowl rings is Jeff Bostic, who won three titles with the Redskins in 1982, 1987 and 1991.
