Maryland Review

Sitting in the cold Clemson section for the last time at Byrd Stadium in College Park Saturday, a friend made an interesting observation. He said, "Maybe we are just spoiled now."

By that he meant maybe our program has gotten to the point where we can win by double digits on the road and is not good enough to please us anymore. I thought it was a good point.

There was a lot that went wrong Saturday. Clemson did not put away an outmanned and wounded Maryland team early when it had a chance. The Tigers gave up a long touchdown pass in the first quarter. The red zone offense missed Tajh BoydTajh Boyd

But the glass half-full folks will take a road win where the Tigers rebounded from the loss last week. There were a lot of positives for the sunshine pumpers to point out.

The Tigers gained 551 yards and had 30 first downs on 98 plays. Not bad for an off day.

Clemson had 247 yards rushing and 304 yards passing. The Tigers out rushed Maryland 247 yards to 82.

The Tigers did turn the ball over three times but also forced four turnovers.

Clemson had only four penalties for 36 yards.

The defense held the Terps to two field goals after turnovers deep in Clemson territory and picked off a pass in the end zone.

This was Clemson’s 15th consecutive double digit victory over an unranked opponent, the second longest streak in the nation behind Alabama’s 25 game streak.

Clemson had a player with at least 160 yards rushing and a player with at least 160 yards receiving in the same game for the first time in school history.

It was a historic and record setting day for Boyd who went over the 10,000 yards passing in his career. Boyd is now second in ACC history in terms of passing yards behind only Philip Rivers of NC State (13,484). He had one rushing TD and one passing and now has 112 for his career tying the ACC record also held by Rivers. He is now second in ACC history in total yards with 11,287, second to only Rivers' 13,582. Saturday was Boyd’s 35th consecutive start at quarterback for Clemson. Rod McDowell had his second career 100-yard rushing game with 30 carries for 161 yards. It was his career high in attempts and rushing yards. McDowell had his first two rushing touchdowns of the season Saturday.

This was not a picture perfect win, but it was a much needed win. It was a win over a depleted Maryland team that put up a good fight. It was also a win that sends the Terps to the Big Ten with a loss in the last game against Clemson.
