Honoring our Past

A few years ago when the 911system called for every street to have a name, Clemson responded ASAP and in the process, we created senseless names on some campus streets. On our campus now we have Alpha Street, Omega Street, Nu Street. Etc.

I think it would be nice to take an inventory of street names on campus and begin naming them after some of the people that helped make this place so special.

I think it would be nice to name some of these streets after people who don't and won't have buildings named after them.

Herman McGee is a perfect example. I never met Mr. McGee, but those that knew him rave about him. Former student-athletes used to come back to campus just to visit Herman McGee. He played a significant role in so many lives. Why not honor a man who made this kind of impact? Also, I would name them Way instead of street. Herman McGee Way would be a terrific honor.

I don't understand why the indoor track building isn't named after Bob Pollock, but if we aren't going to do that then why not Bob Pollock Way. The man won 21 ACC titles at Clemson for goodness sake. There was certainly a Bob Pollock way of doing things in Clemson track and Bob Pollock Way sounds better than Nu Street.

I know College Avenue is a city street, but considering the impact Uncle Bill Greenlee made during his time on that same street, wouldn't Greenlee Way sound better than College Avenue?

The list goes on and on. I imagine in your head you probably can name a few people who you think deserve the honor.

In my head, I have this honor reserved for those that may have been a little lower profile than the big names like Bob Edwards, Walter Riggs, Walter Cox and Frank Howard.

Since I focus on athletics, look around and take inventory of the people who don't have anything named after them here. Bill Wilhelm wouldn't like it, but how about key figures like Byron Harder? General Bob Jones? Charlie Bussey? Whitey Jordan?

My suggestion would be to take inventory of the streets with names that don't have significance. Then put together a committee and take about a ten-year project and name two or three a year after these greats. It could coincide with a football weekend or even the spring game.

Recently on campus, we have had racial issues arise. I am for real change instead of superficial change, but it would be nice to have McGee and Greenlee honored in a formal setting.

We have so many people who have made this place great, and I believe this inventory of streets provide us an excellent opportunity to honor them. It would be an educational opportunity to teach so many about the people who have paved the way for these streets.
