Mickey,

There was no question in my mind that winning at Auburn was going to a huge task and I hope you will give credit where credit is due because Kevin Steele had the best game plan against Clemson that I have seen in the year and a half of Deshaun Watson's career. The mistakes that Clemson made in the last 5 minutes were ugly and why in the world did Wayne Gallman try to get outside and get knocked out of bounds to stop the clock? Any running back in that situation has to know that if he falls down in bounds the clock runs for 35 seconds and Auburn has only about 10 seconds left instead of 40. Thank goodness the defense held up.

Wow, now there are 2 cupcakes the next two games and hopefully time to learn from the mistakes that almost cost us the game. Any win is a good win and Coach Elliott and Coach Scott have to dial up some plays that do not involve Watson running because Auburn proved that putting a spy on him is the way to go. The good news is that it will be four weeks against Louisville before Clemson faces athletes on defense like those at Auburn and gaining yards will be much easier that it was tonight.

Andy

Andy,

I predicted Clemson would win by two touchdowns, and that very easily could have been the case. Clemson did not play well, and Steele does deserve some credit for that.

Clemson made enough mistakes to lose. Gallman ran out of bounds twice on the final drive. Boulware and O'Daniel's late hits hurt. The secondary busted two assignments. Watson missed a few open receivers. Huegel missed another PAT. And Williams dropped a couple of touchdown passes.

However, they did a lot of good things as well. Dexter Lawrence, Christian Wilkins, Kendall Joseph, Mike Williams and Gallman did a lot of very good things.

I would not expect a lot of running from Watson the next two weeks because the plan may be to have him more healthy for Georgia Tech.

I agree that Louisville is the next test. We will learn a lot about Petrino's group before they come to Death Valley.

Hi Mickey,

Not sure if this is something you can help with but I watched the Auburn game and was concerned about what I think is our punt safe defense. We had Ray Ray McCloud back for the return along with Kendall Joseph on the field together. The officials didn't catch it but they're both # 34. That's a penalty in college & I don't want it to cost us down the road at a bad time. If you could pass this on to somebody on the staff I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,

Mike

Mike,

I did not notice it until I watched the replay. That was not the case on most punts, but I saw it once, and that is one too many times. I just wish we didn't have double numbers and didn't have to worry about that.

Mickey,

After watching our first game at Auburn on Saturday night, I felt more confidence than ever in Wayne Gallman.

That being said, I was looking forward to seeing some of the other RBs show their progress on the field. Everything I have read and heard made me think we would see Gallman be the lead back, but three other guys would get plenty of time as well. We only got to see Adam Choice for a handful of plays, and if I remember correctly, we didn't see any other backs out there.

Do you think this is simply because it was a tight game and the Wayne Train was having success? Or is there anything that leads you to believe that Choice, Tyshon Dye, CJ Fuller, and Tavien Feaster aren't truly trusted by the coaches yet?

Sincerely,

Kyle

Kyle,

Dye played a series but didn't carry the ball against Auburn. This week I expect to see a lot more of the reserves at a lot of positions.

I think they trust Gallman, and the game was tight enough to where the staff didn't feel comfortable subbing at a lot of positions.

Mickey,

A couple of observations. Have we slowed down on our play calling speed. Seems to me we are going a little slower than when Chad Morris was here. Also I don't remember seeing us running a Jet Sweep or Bubble Screen in the Auburn game. As much trouble as Kevin Steele had defending that against West Virginia, I'm a little surprised that wasn't part of our game plan.

Thanks,

Jeff

Jeff,

They are a little slower, but the new coordinators are 16-1, so I am not complaining. I only saw a couple of those perimeter plays. Auburn played press corner often which may have prevented some of that package.
