Mickey,

You chose not to answer my very serious question last week about whether Deshaun WatsonDeshaun Watson

should have played against South Carolina if he had a risk of worse injury and that is moot now that the question has apparently been answered.    Now among the questions in the "kneegate" is if Deshaun would not play in the bowl, why wait 2 weeks to do the surgery if the recovery time is the issue?   Has he done something else to the knee that we don't know about?   Did Deshaun or his parents say enough is enough or did the surgeon finally decide that he should not risk playing?     We have to remember that the young man is a freshman and only played about half the year and his long term health is the most important thing.    As a parent, grandparent, and a 40 year member of IPTAY, I applaud whoever made the decision to go ahead with surgery.

Andy

Andy,

I did not choose to not answer your question. I answer every email I receive. Maybe it it went into a junk email because of a filter but I answer every email.

The decision was made this week about his surgery. They looked at the factors and made a decision this week. The reason it was not done until today is the fact that it is exam week at Clemson this week. Academics are important to this program and Watson is a good student. Exams came first.

There is no other further damage. Deshaun and his mom did not say enough is enough.

The bottom line through all of this is that Watson was in good hands throughout this entire process. I know the medical staff at Clemson very well. I know the training staff at Clemson very well and I know the coaching staff at Clemson very well. They have Watson's best interest in their hearts. They had all of the medical information and they made the best decisions for him at every juncture. I completely trust the coaching staff, medical staff and training staff. They are professionals and truly care a great deal about every student-athlete at Clemson.

Mickey,

I read the article in your blog today,"Oklahoma." I have my doubts about our ability to move the ball against Oklahoma unless DeShaun Watson plays. In the 5-game stretch from Louisville to Georgia Tech we averaged less than 20 points per game.

Kindest Regards,

Kirk

Kirk,

As we now know Watson will not play. Like you, I have concerns about the offense without Watson. It is clear the offense completely changes with him in the game. What cannot happen is for turnovers to take place. The Tigers can win a close, low-scoring defensive oriented game if the offense does not turn the ball over, but has little chance if they throw pick sixes like they did at Georgia Tech.

Hey Mickey,

I have (3) topics for ya.

The 1st and reason for this email is your blog on men's hoops. I was and am upbeat about this year team. In your blog, you never even mention Tigers lost KJ McDANIELS off last year NIT team. We are not the Heels or Dukies. We lose an NBA guy it is going to hurt. He led the Tigers is just about every statistical category, not to mention his Leadership.  This year team has only played 8 games. No one guy is going to fill the void. It is going to take time for different guys to step up and fill roles. They have to figure out who is going to take the shot with game on line in final minutes. Coach Brownell needs time to figure out his rotations. I attended Arkansas game and Tigers held a team that was averaging 88 points a game to 65 including overtime. That game should boost confidence and give them foundation to build. If Tigers can survive a brutal 5 game stretch to start ACC play, I can see a team that finishes 500 in conference play and repeat trip to NIT.

Bill

Bill,

In the blog on basketball, I said November and December basketball should not be judged. I said this time of year teams were trying to identify their players and roles. But I did say this team had not played hard on a consistent basis and defense was an issue. This is exactly what Brownell said as well. KJ was great but this team returned four starters and a lot of experience.

I don't know what will happen with McCullough but he is in the dog house big time right now. I would not put him down as someone the staff is counting on right now. Richard is a beast. He has a chance to be special. Cannon SmithCannon Smith

will be a good player also. I really like Garrett Williams as well.

Roderick Byers is a good kid that has worked really hard. I am happy he has gotten a chance and done the most with it.
