Friday Email Bag
Mickey, As more information comes to light about the academic scandal at UNC is contrasted against the needs of continued academic success among Clemson Athletics a question came to my mind. Would you or David Hood, please update us all as to what programs and processes Clemson has in place to insure the academic integrity of it's athletic programs? I am not looking for an article which would vilify UNC any further, but I think it is an important question that all Universities should be asking considering the stain it has placed upon UNC. What steps are being taken to insure that academic fraud is not being perpetuated (or ignored) by the university or a rogue department or individual. Glen
Each Friday I publish your comments and answer your questions. To submit a comment or questions please email me at email@example.com.
Read your article today and agree that Clemson is killing it for the 2015 class. What puzzles me is why has recruiting changed so much in that players are committing so early. I get the sense that some players want to get the recruiting process over with, but others continue to take visits. You always have the risk of someone changing their minds, so I am completely in favor of an early signing date, as is the case with basketball. Would like your thoughts on what has changed and whether an early signing date is a reasonable expectation.
I think the biggest thing that has changed is that players are looking for security. An early commitment means they get a scholarship to their school and an injury doesn't change that. They lock in to a school like an insurance policy but some still want to look around and take official and unofficial visits. Also they get a a little concerned about scholarships when classes begin to fill up. Still others tire of the process and want to get it over with.
You guys keep up the good work!.
I know the people in Vickery Hall do an unbelievable job with Clemson's student-athletes. They monitor every aspect of each student-athletes academic progress on a daily basis. They have complex programs there that are full of checks and balances to ensure the things that happened at UNC don't happen here. With that said we are still talking about human beings and it only takes one rogue tutor to write a paper and it becomes an issue. It never surprises me when a rogue booster or administrator makes a mistake. What does surprise me is when it was system wide like it was at North Carolina. I would be shocked if that happened here at Clemson.
