Hootie was a better AD than Head Football Coach, but I always liked him. I remember the excitement as a 10-yr old, when Hootie was hired, and I thought we had finally moved on from the outdated ideas of Frank Howard and into the space-age of modern football. It didn't exactly work out that way, but Hootie was a good guy and he gave us the Tiger Paw.

Actually the paw came in while he was there. He did not give us that. He took the hill entrance away till his last game. I don't think he had a winning season but seemed a nice guy and stepped aside when he just couldn't get going.

Hottie worked closely with them on several designs. I think the agency was Henderson.

And early paws were painted on the street leaving the stadium and continued heading towards Johnstone. Many felt that appropriate for the 1970 Tigers.
Apparently he was a good administrator, but indeed he must be considered as one of if not THE worst Clemson coach.
Unfortunately, my soph through senior years. At least 50 people attended most games. Little could we even imagine that 10 years later we would be playing in the Orange Bowl for the Championship.

I arrived at Clemson along with Hootie and the Tiger Paw. He was a true gentleman. May he rest in peace.
As I recall the defensive line he inherited averaged 199lbs. I don't remember the weight of the heaviest.
In the years since there have been many memorable games but that Carolina game in 1972 will always be one victory that I will cherish. Carolina swore they would not lose to Clemson again after being defeated in Columbia the year before. The feeling in that miserably cold wet stadium when Jimmy knocked down that pass went from despair to elation in a heartbeat.

74TIGER, what site did you get Hootie's Clemson record from? I ask bc I looked on the Wikipedia site and it read that his Clemson coaching record was 12–21. In 1970 his record was 3-8 with a 2-4 ACC record. In 1971 his record was 5–6 with a 4–2 ACC record. In 1972 his record was 4–7 with a 2–4 ACC record.

The paw on the other hand is one of the most iconic marketing symbols in college football history. It's visibility helped all the coaches that followed and no doubt helped the tremendous growth of Clemson .

I wasn't there at Clemson when Frank retire and Hootie was hired, But I had already been a 10 year solid Clemson Tiger at 20 years old when he left Clemson. I watched as many Clemson games that could be found on TV during those years, and being that young with lots of interest, I only made it to at least 1 Clemson home game a year, and sometimes two. But it was around age 30-35 that I became a never die Tiger fan, and I was at 4-5 home games every year up until a serious back injury in 2006. But I still made it to 2-3 games a season until my injury started moving downhill at about age 62, and I went to 1 home game after I turned 63. IMO though, being a fan in the stands is the best about being a sports fan, and I absolutely loved it, and I miss being one of the fans in DV more than anyone could imagine if they haven't experienced a debilitating injury like I have!!!
