and wondered how talented these two teams are.
According to 247Sports, the two teams’ recent recruiting classes rank nationally as follows:
Michigan 2023: 20th 2022: 12th 2021: 13th 2020: 12th
Washington 2023: 29th 2022: 59th 2021: 26th 2020: 18th
Then I wondered where they ranked in terms of transfer classes. In the last four years, Michigan’s highest transfer rank was 17th while Washington’s highest transfer rank was 24th.
It is pretty incredible that both of these teams are playing for a national championship despite not ranking higher in talent level.

Good coaching and teamwork goes a long way. Hopefully our coaching changes will get our culture back where it needs to be so we can compete at the same level!

It’s called development. Starts in the training room and extends out to the practice field.

seem to be the ones who let which sports team they root for be part of who they are as a person (which is weird) and therefore get personally offended when someone doesn’t share their view of that team (which is really weird). Lots of self-appointed martyrs around here.

To me, these numbers lend credit to Dabo's vision of being developmental, loyal, and only using the portal to fill gaps (not to be the highest bidder for star starters). What is required to make that vision work is a great coaching staff and culture. We used to have it, and I believe we are getting it back.

My numbers arent inaccurate. I used overall rank, not composite rank.

There really isn’t much of a difference between overall ranking and composite ranking.
The takeaway for me is that these are not teams loaded with 5 star recruits. They’ve recruited well, but not close to an elite level, yet here they are.

Which means the recruiting services were wrong. I know you posted this as a lead in to a future troll job of Coach Swinney.

I believe a great qb can carry a solid team to elite status. That is what Washington has. Michigan is pretty elite talent wise.

And they got that great QB from the transfer portal, an asset that we refuse to use.

The winning team, Michigan, has 5 transfers that play. A backup TE that saw the least playing time this year, the kicker, a DB, the Center and another OL that played in all the games and started a few.
No WRs, no RBs, and no QB.

They use the portal intelligently and fill needs not build their entire roster. FSU is cooked next year, Colorado will be a 5 or 6 win team. All these heavy portal teams will feel pain in the future.

Some seasons the stars align for a team. It takes talent, coaching, drive, and luck. Those seasons don't come along very often for a team. Enjoy it when it happens.

Auburn had a horseshoe up their butts the last time they won. Clemson dropped an easy pass in the end zone that would have won the game. South Carolina should have beaten them also. It takes a little luck to get to the championship.

Yep. That LSU team had talent and hit the jackpot with Burrow and Brady together for one year. Also a lot of luck. Then immediately back to obscurity. But it all came together for one year for them.

These aren’t really meaningful as most teams ebb and flow considerably season to season.
The total team composite is far more meaningful:
https://247sports.com/season/2023-football/collegeteamtalentcomposite/
#14 versus #26
Michigan beat 3 teams ahead of them to get here. Washington had to beat 4 (counting Oregon twice).
Michigan is also extremely experienced - they have 75 juniors and seniors on their total roster (247 doesn’t denote who is and isn’t scholarship on the full roster). Washington only has 39 juniors and seniors. In other words, if any value is given to experience then Michigan probably should have been a prohibitive favorite coming into this season and in this game.

Great post. I’ve read on Tigernet that only 8 or so teams have legitimate chance at championship. Surprised Washington recruiting especially not that impressive.

Washington has a 6th year QB with over 13,000 passing yards and 105 career TDs! That’s like a 10* recruit
