I believe it was a 1972 soccer game he actually sat next to me in the stands. His only comment was that if ball went in that net, we get the point; if it goes in the net over yander, they get the point.
I think what made him so popular was that he always said exactly whatever was on his mind. [Remin you of anyone else ?

I was fortunate enough to have met Coach Howard a couple of times, including with my oldest son - but my youngest son had never met the man about whom he had heard so many stories - all true, of course - no need whatsoever to make up material about him - he supplied plenty of true, original stuff. So, when he was in the Anderson Area Regional Medical Center at what appeared to be close to the end, I took my youngest son by to visit him. When we got to his room, he was suffering from a bad headache, and was seated in a straight-back chair, dressed in white socks with sandals, orange shorts, and a white workout t-shirt. Even at that age and in that condition, I swear he looked tough enough to play line for the Red Elephants!! He had a wet towel over his forehead and eyes, so I started to introduce myself, "Coach, I know you can't see me, but I just wanted to pay you a short visit . . . ", and before I could get anything else out, he barked in his raspy voice "He!!, buddy - I probably wouldn't know you anyway!!" Yep, the coach called it like he saw it . . . or didn't see it, as the case may be!! I'm glad he didn't scare us off - we had a most pleasant little 10-minute visit, and he was ever so gracious to my 8-year old son. He only lived a few more weeks past then, but, as always, he left a lasting impression!!! R/TLM

I never met the legend, but saw interviews and listened to him on the radio broadcasts and the man was funny like a dry version of Jerry Clower. He had gravitas as well. Happy birthday Coach Howard.

They had an IPTAY meeting at the Fairgrounds in Ladson and Frank was there with Jerry Clowers. That was a very interesting and funny evening. I think it was the Spring of 1990.

Howard was loved because he was tough and a winner.
