Does any "Juan" know the status of South of the Border in Dillon?

Passed by there yesterday for the first time in three years and noticed a significant decline of property maintenance. No vehicles. Didn't look like anything was open. Yet, there were some newer signs along both sides of I-95.
Looks like that would be a great place for development. Buc-ee's would have been better there than towards Florence. I just wonder how anyone can pay the bills and taxes on that place...for years...with no visible business.
Have they gone back to their rumored ways?

They can't afford maintenance costs since they spend all of their money on signs***

I lived in Florence for a few years back in the mid 90’s…I always assumed SOTB was a money laundering operation or affiliated with drugs/gangs. Never visited.

You should look it up. It has a great back story. Believe it or not a Jewish family from SC was the originator of SOB and he made a fortune through the years. My guess he has passed on and his heirs do not have the same passion as he had for the place. There are lots of stories written up about the place.

old Scott Towers... in that general area, a bad part of town back then. There were never any cars in the parking lot or drive-thru. None. Wondered how it stayed in business, rumor had it that it was just a front for a big coke dealing operation. I was in HS so early 70s.

We stopped there for ice cream a few years ago and it certainly was not what we expected. Pretty low class operation. I think they rent the rooms by the week or month to construction laborers. The souvenir shop and a restaurant plus ice cream shop are open I believe.

It is now a motocross training facility (owned by an heir of the family). The rooms are now apartments for the racers that live there to train. If you are into racing (I am), it is a GREAT facility! If you are looking for a snack stop or a souvenir shop on a road trip, stop at Buc-ees.

Pedro got Frank Mcguire to bring John Roche and the boys to SOB for an exhibition practice. There was a basketball goal at the end of one of the tennis courts. I worked there 3 summers. I love to tell people that the biggest gamecock fan in Dillon County helped pay my tuition at Clemson.

I don't care what happens to that place as long as they keep making Blenheim Ginger Ale. I just wish they had better distributing, so I didn't have to drive there or pay ridiculous shipping costs to get some.
