Another place in that same price range and quality level is Hall's Chophouse. Can't go wrong with either.

We like southern brewery because they have a nice upstairs pool area with a bar. They also have dancing nights such as salsa. Oh, and they brew beer too.

My daughter lived there for several years while in college and med school. Her favorite "locals" restaurant was The Wreck in Mount Pleasant. Nothing fancy but the food is wonderful!

Olive, Wild....Much better than Mondo's ...Also love Chez Nous. Check on-line at 11 AM for the daily 2 entree selections. Lunch same as dinner price and selection. I changes every day for what is freshest and available. You may not like either of the two selections, if so go to Mc Crady's or Penninsula or Charleston Grill or wherever.....

Try The Wreck and The Mustard Seed, both in Mt. Pleasant. Non-tourist places with great food and lower than Charleston prices. If you're up there around lunchtime, hit Jack's Cosmic Dog for Clemson bleu cheese slaw, draft root beer and vinegar fries.

cuisine; pork belly & pad thai are to die for. Not to mention dumpling varieties, banh mis, rolls etc. The kicker is how affordable it is as well, nothing over $15/plate.
They got a guy in the kitchen missing half a ring finger he lost fleeing the country in '72; works 10-15 hrs a day 5-6 days a week on the soup/noodles station. Truly authentic, this place.

Lived in Charleston since 1970. Pretty much tried them all. There are easily 50+ "high end" restaurants with excellent food and probably more. What type of food were you looking for and what is your price range? Some will require reservations many weeks in advance. It is hard to go wrong.

I've been to Husk and Halls and Hanks the last trips into Charleston.
Halls is great. Husk was a let down as was Hanks. 2 out of 3 of us hated Hanks. Not sure why as all the reviews were great. Wanted to like them all.
Magnolias is always great.
The Wreck is good.
Dukes BBQ and Home Team BBQ are great.
Looking to try some new spots this time around.
My price range varies. For some celebratory reasons (graduation) I am going to have to splurge a couple of times while in town.
I've already got reservations made for Peninsula and Charleston Grill on the same night. Need to pick one of the two.

We are locals and yes, Peninsula Grill is great but serving size a little small, our favorites are Grill 225 and especially Circa 1886 (free parking at Circa). All 3 are in same price range but great places to eat.

Lots of good suggestions here.

|
|
First of all, Peninsula Grill is outstanding. You will probably want to wear a jacket if you go for dinner. I don't believe it is required, but most of the other guys will be wearing one.
Hall's Chophouse is excellent and worth the money. Charleston Grill is as well. At a similar price point is Circa 1886, which is great. Slightly less expensive is Slightly North of Broad (SNOB). Still a really nice experience though.
I can highly recommend Muse. It is not quite as upscale as the ones I listed above, but it is one of my favorite places to eat in Charleston. If I am visiting for a weekend, I typically try to go. It is small, and somewhat quirky, but a lovely environment and always great.
If you want something outside of the downtown area (cheaper but still really good), I can recommend Mondo's Italian Restaurant on James Island. Consistently good food and a neat atmosphere.
I lived in Charleston for five years, and despite my best effort to try all of the restaurants, I wasn't able to because there are so many great ones. You really can't go wrong. I highly recommend reservations if you are dining on a Friday or Saturday night.
Enjoy, and please let us know where you end up going (and how it was!).

Thanks Judge.
In my past trips to Chs, I have tried Hanks, Husk, Magnolias, Fleet, Halls, Poogans Porch, Dukes, Home Team BBQ, The Wreck, Queology.
Me and my date are probably one of the few who did not like Hanks and Husk.
Appreciate all the suggestions.
I made reservations weeks ago for Peninsula and Charleston Grill.

the portion size and you need to dress a little nicer than just casual.
I really like both Magnolias and Cypress (same ownership and they share a parking lot). Went to 82 Queen last year... it's been around a long time, but still very good food and they give you a lot of it.

Food was outstanding and the portions were very large.. i ended up taking leftovers home. The only thing i wasn't crazy about was the seating. The outdoor courtyard with the bar looked excellent, but it was mid-July and they weren't really seating people out there because it was 90 degrees. My wife and i ended up at a little table in a small upstairs with 1 other couple, and eventually a small group of 4, but it was very, very quiet and a little awkward. Some people may like that, but i prefer a little more hustle and bustle and ambience.

Poogan's and 82 Queen have been around over thirty years! It's not an accident.
Swig & Swine is solid...same owners as 82 Queen (Clemson family!)...good Q...
Not a fan of Glass Onion...over-rated and priced, in my opinion.
Tattooed Moose...yum....!

It's just a big hype machine.
Think of CHS restaurants like SEC football and ESPN.
Get it?

The restaurant at Middleton Place is greatly improved, and if you go there you get the run of the grounds. Just in case you are considering "outside the box" options.

In late January, my new bride and I ate at:
Lunch - High Cotton - "new"southern cuisine. Very good.
Supper - 39 Rue de Jean- not crazy about the atmosphere but food was very good and price was reasonable by Charleston standards.
Lunch - 82 Queen. I have been here 6 or 7 times in the past. Best crab cakes- anywhere-IMHO. Wife had shrimp salad. It was outstanding. We shared a bottle of wine. Ordered another crab cake and another bottle of wine. Pricey, but worth it.
Supper - Could not get a reservation at Husk. Kept reading good things about Hall's Chophouse and we had decided then that we wanted beef. Asked the concierge @ French Quarter about it. He said it was one of the best steakhouses in the city and reservations were sometimes made months in advance. It happened to be a Monday night in late January and he was able to get us reservations for 8:30 PM. We shared the Tomahawk Ribeye...with Black Truffle Butter. Excellent. If you want to eat beef, celebrate a special occasion, and spend more money than usual...this is it.

If you venture over to Mt. Pleasant make sure to try the Granary and Basil (also a location downtown on King St). Sullivan's Island has a great lunch spot called Poe's Tavern. Mex 1 is also solid.

Will do.
I have eaten at Husk and Halls and Hanks before. Fan of Halls. We were not fans of Hanks or Husk believe it or not although the 3rd member of our party did like them both.
Magnolias serves good food at a reasonable price.
Halls and Husk and Hanks were more expensive if I recall.
I like Dukes BBQ and HomeTeam BBQ and Queology.
Kaminskys is a neat dessert experience. I like it.
Poogans Porch was good.
Have reservations again for Magnolia on this trip. Have reservation for both Charleston Grill and Peninsula Grill.

S.N.O.B. for lunch. Try the Vegetable Medley. Coast for Dinner. Two solid staples downtown.
Virginia's on King or Jestine's Kitchen if you like reasonably priced southern food.

Now that the finer establishments have had their due rundown, I'll direct your attention to the true diamonds in the rough in Charleston. If you wanna "live" the city like a local (I lived downtown for 5 years), you need to get on Yelp and use the search filters to list the lowest priced restaurants (one $ or two $$ on the listing) and sort them by highest rating. I have built entire vacations around this method (favorite was San Fran), and it does not disappoint. Tons of burgeoning establishments of every shape, size, menu, and ethnicity.
Best fried seafood in Charleston? Dave's carry-out - in the hood, crazy good. Best taco & margarita? Santi's - in a revamped huddle house bldg on north meeting st Best sandwich shop? Butcher & Bee on north king Best pizza? D'Alessandro's in Elliotborough Best fancy-schmamcy? Halls Chophouse - top 5 in the country according to TripAdvisor
I could go on and on - definitely peel back the obvious touristy layers and find the hidden gems!

Halls is a steak house, not that's it bad because you can't go wrong with Allen brothers steaks but wouldn't call it fine dining it's a chophouse.

If Peninsula was a thought I would consider Lucca, Fulton Five, Chez Nous, Langdons, Macintosh, Ordinary, or Charleston Grill
