What’s another good bourbon to get for my collection? Looking for some good ones to find and hold onto. Excited that I finally got a nice cabinet to store my bottles in. It’s a lot better than where they were on top of the fridge. Got it stocked and ready to go for football season!

I’ve had the rare breed but not the newer rye one. I may get both.

With what they consider sexier off the path exotic brands, like all the craft beer fanatics. I have tried probably over 50 bourbons and not one is better than 101 except for WT Rare Breed and WT Russell's Reserve 10 year to me. I could care less what anyone else's palate says.

To be 101 proof
Mar 20, 2022, 11:58 PM
|
|
It has a strong maple, brown sugar flavor in it, especially with Diet Coke, believe it or not. I like others too, but none of them have bumped WT 101 off of my shelf. The WT Rare Breed 116.8 proof and the WT Russell 's Reserve 10 year are outstanding as well. My taste may be different but I haven't found one that I honestly like better than those 3 WT's. I like what I like and hope everyone else drinks what they truly like. I don't get into the "scholarly" side of Beer and Bourbon tasting. Modelo and WT 101 are my go to's......

Not sure of the budget. I like to stay around the $40 to $60 range. Michters small batch. Russell's Reserve 10 year. Wild Turkey rare breed. Henry McKenna bottled in bond. All pretty good for a decent price.

Though it can be a bit more than some of the above recommendations, I have enjoyed the bottles of Jefferson's Ocean Aged at Sea series. I got this bottle at Costco for $65, it usually goes for $89.
I have had some of Jefferson's others, but I find the Ocean Aged the best of the ones I have had from them.

Based on sideways photo, you've had enough bourbon! But...

...seriously, I just got back from a 3-day, 9-distillery Louisville/Verseilles/Bardstown, Kentucky bourbon tour. Willett, Four Roses, Bulleit, Jim Beam, Evan Williams, Stitzel-Weller, Copper and Kings, Woodford, and Angel's Envy. We devised our own tour, so it is different from the commercial/canned tours. My best advice to you is to find a very good mash bill list for MANY bourbons. The mash bill is a percentage of various grains used in the mash. Typically, corn, rye, malted barley,... Then, look up the mash bills of bourbons that you really like. Then, look at all the bourbons with similar mash bills. Many people like the kinda' peppery burn on the mid-palate and back of the tongue. This is associated with rye. I have found that I like low rye, but not no rye. Bulleit is a high rye bourbon. Bulleit was distilled to be more for mixing.
All that being said, I think that Four Roses distillery turns out all winners. They use 2 separate mash bills and several yeasts to create different bourbons. https://fourrosesbourbon.com/our-recipes/
I also really like Knob Creek Reserve 9, Lecent, and Buffalo Trace. Elija Craig is (for now) my favorite bang for the buck bourbon. Rowan's Creek by Willett is very good, but a little hard to find. If you EVER luck out and see a bottle of Stagg Jr. or Eagle Rare at ABC store prices BUY IT!!! The trick is to know when your favorite ABC store gets it's shipments, and stick your head in the door right after it is shelved to see if they got a SMALL allotment of some hard to get gems like Stagg Jr. or Eagle Rare.

Lots of good options to choose from, but my personal favorite is Elmer T Lee (aka ETL). I’d probably drink nothing else if it were a bit easier to find…

Buffalo Trace seems to have an impressive line up Pappy, ETL, Weller etc. I might need to shift the 401K in that direction.

Have not found one that I did not like besides Jim Beam. Will probably take my flask to the golf course today and it will be Bulleit. Not the best I’m sure but for the money I’m very happy.

Corsair in Nashville has some very creative whiskey/bourbon whiskey combinations on their mashbills. The variety of wheats, ryes, oats, smoked, toasted etc is pretty mad-scientist-y

Straight I really like Angels Envy Rye, Basil Hayden and Woodford Reserve
In a Manhattan I prefer Bulleit Rye
While the common belief is that Rye creates the burn, I have found high corn mash bill can do the same. IMO Bulliet Rye is pretty peppery while Angels Envy Rye is not.

The burn in the stomach is from the alcohol. In bourbon country, they call it a Kentucky hug. The pepperiness on the top-middle of the tongue, and the back of the tongue is from rye. Bulleit Rye has a mash bill that is 95% rye (Bulleit bourbon is 28% rye), and Angels Envy Bourbon is 18% rye. I couldn't find any mash bill info. on the Angel's Envy rye, but it is finished in rum barrels.

I have tried most of the real distillers brands and have several bottles of Pappy, Stagg, birthday bourbon, ETL and Weller in the bunker. Now that I'm retired I basically go with Old Forester bourbon and rye. Both are under $25 here and are just great

Col Taylor and Basil Hayden are solid picks. Eagle Rare is also smooth! BH is much easier to find. I still prefer a bottle of Talisker over those 3. Enjoy.
