Blackberry Smoke at the Charleston Music hall--crystal clear sound and technically identical to their albums.
First time I saw Hans Wenzel and the 86'ers. It's always free, but I have paid good money to see bands that aren't half as good as them. Hans belts out "like a stone" and "Cochese" better than Chris Cornell did. Those dudes amaze me every time I hear them.

First time I saw them at the old Music Farm on East Bay, right before they released their original live album. That was the first time I learned about Oteil and Apt Q258, they quickly moved into my top three bass / drummer pairings.
That was a crazy fun summer night, best $10 ticket I've ever purchased.

Fat Boys, Whodini, and New Edition. All three were fantastic. Circa 1984-ish, Augusta GA.
Followed closely by Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, and Run-DMC a couple/few years later in Columbia.
Hey, what can I say? I grew up in the 80s.

went in having heard it would be a good show even if the music wasn't really my jam. Started off having one of the performers that was part of the show climb over me on her way down the stadium seats. I was on the jumbotron. Then the #### show was like Cirque du Solei with singing.
I've talked to other people who saw both who said only Prince put on a better spectacle.

Here Come The Mummies
Mar 28, 2024, 11:16 AM

Never heard of 'em, no idea what to expect, and ended up being one of the best shows I've ever witnessed. Allegedly, most or all of them are Grammy nominee/Grammy winning studio musicians in Nashville(ish), who can't contractually perform with other groups under their own names. Thus...pseudonym mummies with covered faces and makeup.

thought it'd be a chill / bluegrass vibe.
nope. face melting, twangy jam session be more like it.
most shows I go to, I know what I'm getting into haha.
only other "exceeded expectations" was when Zac Brown played a set w/ String Cheese at Lockn, circa 2013/2014? that was dope...wasn't expecting that at all.

I'm not a Parrot Head by any standards and didn't really know how crazy the concerts were. Had a phenomenal time tailgating, and then we watched him perform in a downpour at the Pavilion. He acted like he was 22 and this was his first concert. Just having the time of his life with the crowd. It was such a good show, we didn't mind getting drenched.
Still didn't leave a Parrot Head, but had a lot more respect and appreciation for Buffet and the culture afterward.

absolute ridiculous bands rolled through there. you could see public enemy one night and two nights later you’re seeing edwin mccain.
do not like dmb but saw them before they launched whatever that first album was that shot them out. they were trying to build a following in the south. apparently they were selling out venues in baltimore, dc, charlottesville etc. it was a tue or wed and $10 all you can drink draft or something crazy. it was 91 maybe? place was half full.

that was absolute fire, high energy and great horn section. I was absolutely there for the free beer and had no idea about the show.
Late 90s I went to an everything show in St Louis and it was terrible. I'm not even sure it was the same band.
Apparently they still exist.

my number one all time is Meat Loaf. Yes, Meat Loaf.
Mar 28, 2024, 12:03 PM
|
|
Meat Loaf - absolutely fantastic. Big fella gave 100% energy to exhaustion. Had zero expectations going in, went just because I had free tickets and nothing else to do that night. Huge fan leaving.
Courtney Love/Hole again, low expectations. Those wimmen rawked the house. Hate Courtney if you want, she's an entertainer.
These are not my favorite concerts of all time, far from it. But to answer the question of exceeding expectations, it's probably these two off the top of my head. If I thought on it a few hours, maybe I'd come up with another, but these two popped up immediately.

2021, Meow Wolf.
She’s like 60 and put on a highly entertaining show. I loved chanting “nasty” at her ######, and the costume play was amazing. She played a song I hadn’t heard, about stoping the spread of Covid via squirt. I laughed a lot, and I genuinely like her music. She was a nice person on stage too.

I wasn't that big of a fan, but GF wanted to go. They came out and played one hit after another for over two hours. Their band was spectacular and they cut loose and jammed several times. Of course, as an old fokker now, I appreciate a lot of music I brushed off back in the day, but gained a whole new level of respect for H&O that night.

Anybody from Raleigh area will mention DMB at an outdoor venue.
I saw Ted Leo and the Pharmacists at a hole in the wall in Philly once and it was a great night.

Oasis - Music Midtown Atlanta, circa 2000 I wasn’t a fan to begin only hearing a few songs on 99x. Wasn’t expecting #### - but they were great and actually appeared to give a ####. Cracker was excellent as well.

Rob Zombie - mid 2000s Oz Fest. Wasn't really a fan prior to seeing him. Dude tore it up. Great showman.

With the exception of the opening handful of songs for the first set on the last tour, dude's up there all by himself. Him, his guitar and the loop box.
The first time I went to one of his shows, I went into it with near-zero expectations. Pop music. Not what I would choose to listen to. But the fam wanted to go, so I went.
And it was absolutely phenomenal.
