When my grandfather was alive, I was pretty young, and it didn't really cross my mind to talk much about his military service. He retired as a Command Sergeant Major (last stop was overseeing Moncrief Hospital at Fort Jackson), and served in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. But, you know, that's mostly lost on a little kid other than, "Oh neat." A few months back, I discovered you could make records requests of veterans, and decided to request his. He had a few:
LEGION OF MERIT; BRONZE STAR MEDAL with 1 bronze oak leaf cluster; ARMY COMMENDATION MEDAL with 2 bronze oak leaf clusters; GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL, 8th award WORLD WAR II VICTORY MEDAL; ARMY OF OCCUPATION MEDAL with Germany clasp; NATIONAL DEFENSE SERVICE MEDAL with 1 bronze service star; KOREAN SERVICE MEDAL with 1 bronze service star; ARMED FORCES EXPEDITIONARY MEDAL; VIETNAM SERVICE MEDAL with 4 bronze service stars; REPUBLIC OF VIETNAM CAMPAIGN RIBBON W/ DEVICE (1960); REPUBLIC OF VIETNAM GALLANTRY CROSS with palm;
Highly recommend requesting this, but note the Army limits who can actually receive the authorized awards (in order: unremarried widow, eldest child, father or mother, eldest sibling, or eldest grandchild).

Cause everyone that would know anything about his service is dead.
Thanks for the link.

Ooof, I am not eldest grandchild. Would I need my brother to request this?

I guess I'll wait until they reject my request.

I wasn't, and got my hand "lightly" slapped on the request.

Lightly because they were able to provide a listing of the awards, but not the awards themselves (I wasn't expecting that so it wasn't a big deal). They suggested my uncle, who is the eldest child, could open a new request and reference my request # and they would be sent to him.
EDIT: With his permission, you could also probably request it in his name and use your email address to take receipt of the records.

I requested my grandfather's a few years back but got the message that his "could be" part of the records that were destroyed by fire at some point.

I am the youngest. Bro is not in contact with me or really anyone much, but I know he is alive.
I did the request for my grandfather who served in WWI, trained in Spartanburg and served in Europe is what I was told way too many years ago since my dad passed when I was only 20 - we never really talked about his dad's service.
I did the request and we shall see what they will disclose to me as 'other relative'.
Thanks for the link.
