ACC Expansion! Why all the anger??

Does the deal raise more revenue for Clemson? -Yes, between $5-7MM/yr for at least 7yrs.
Do the additions impact the GOR in any way? -No.
Does it keep the conference more solvent while Clemson awaits a new home? -Yes.
Will Clemson be in the ACC in 7-yrs? -No
Will Clemson be in the ACC in 3-yrs? -NO!!!
So, I ask again, what’s the problem with this????

I would agree with your points if we knew for certain Clemson would be in the SEC in 3 years.

So, you’re saying our travel costs will increase by 50% for all of our athletics because our college athletes will travel further to these 3-schools every couple/three years?
2022: Game and Travel Expenses = $14.1MM
Projected revenue per school = $6-8MM/yr
Breakeven travel increase- 14.1 x 0.5 = 7.05MM

($2 Million per school)
The other $42 Million will go to teams based on performance. Not sure if you guys have been paying attention but that means it will be going to Clemson.
Its not a bad deal.

We’ve been paying attention, but how much will that be watered down. That only benefits us if it’s awarded for football success. If they give “prize money” to champs in every sport, which I wouldn’t put past the ACC in any way, we’re just wasting time and rearranging deck chairs on the titanic. Not to mention, these schools tank our SO even more than before.

Where do you get the 5-7 million? 2 more mouths to feed at 30% as of their year one and SMU in 9 years. It would take a new tv contract and with the conference having a few teams rumored to want out why would ESPN renogiate for the addition of 3 weak teams. Between travel and more schools to pay not sure how we net a dime in this deal.
It’s asinine imo to think this is a plus for the ACC. Feel bad for all these kids having to travel as well in sports not related to football.

Looks like our ‘Game Expenses and Travel” for 2022 was 10% of the budget at $14MM.
We should have a good idea of how that will change.

Anger? No. Dismay? Yes.
No one has made a coherent business case yet that this makes any cents. No one. And particularly not Jim Phillips.
Do we have a landing spot in the SEC/B1G? Nope. At least not that we know of.
So until then, I say this is a bad deal. It stinks, actually.

The main reason why you should be upset...
To disband the conference, you're going to need over 50% to agree on it. That number used to be 8 with 15 total members (remember the "Magnificent 7"?). The talk of adding Lville to that number would have resulted in the 8 needed.
Now, that number goes from 8 to 10 (as 9 would only be a 50/50 spilt).
So yes, this definitely affects our ability to dissolve the conference and get out of the GOR. We're now 100% committed to litigating the GOR.

I believe Clemson and Florida State fully understand the likelihood of dissolving the conference and renegotiating.
Bottom line is that there were too many boat riders in the conference relying on boat rowers for those 8-votes to ever materialize making that a non-option from the start.

To help the ACC, BC, SYR, GT, etc...but def. not Clemson. $5M is nothing, part. when you factor in extra expenses.
There is a reason why Clements voted NO.
Now....IF it did affect the GOR where we could exit cheaper/earlier...then maybe.

I think it's a decent stop gap measure for the conference. At this point, there's nothing the league can do to narrow the $$ gap with the Big 2.
But, what this move shows definitely is that Clemson, FSU and UNC likely have Big 2 guaranteed landing spots and the remaining schools (incl Miami and UVA) do not since these are the 3 no votes. Adding these new schools makes the ACC more viable once these 3 depart so when we eventually negotiate a buy out of the GOR we won't be negotiating with teams fighting for their existence.
From UNC's perspective, NCSU breaking away and voting Yes (apart from UNC) is a recognition of reality that they need a viable conference once the 3 leave. NCSU having a viable major conference will make it easier for the Legislature to let us go.
In the meantime, let's enjoy the new road trips to The Bay area and Dallas.

Here’s the link to 2022 costs and expenses.
In 2022, “Game and Travel Expenses” was 10% of the budget at 14.1MM.
Travel expenses would need to increase by 50% overall to wash away anticipated additional revenue of $6-8MM/yr.

expected (and promised) revenues.
I'm not sure 7 mil/yr would cover the cost of travel to Cal and Texas with all our sports programs.
I say 'would,' because I know the ACC leaders are full of snuff and will blow snuff dust up your shorts in a skinny minute.

It does impact the GoR
Sep 1, 2023, 8:33 PM
|
|
At least from the whole 8 schools needed to break the GoR point of view is concerned. That's now been bumped up to 9 or 10 schools.
If it has been USC, UCLA, OREGON OR WASHINGTON in any combination, I would at least get excited. But these schools add nothing to the ACC except travel headaches.

I have no problem with ACC expansion. I think the league should let West Virginia know they are welcome if they wish to join. I also think ND should up the amount of money they put into ACC hands or be informed they no longer have a vote on anything related to ACC college football.
Can someone remind me how SEC membership has improved the on the field performance of Arkansas and South Carolina over the past 30 years. And how has Missouri's on the field performance improved since those Tigers joined the SEC? And let me know if TAMU is a better program now than they were in the SWC days? And what about Maryland football has gotten better in the Big 10? How about Nebraska? You think the Cornhuskers are ever going to recover their past glory?
Yaknow it almost seems like all the movement of teams from one conference to another has had near zero effect of the on the field performance of football teams. Yep, they big boys leagues have more money for women's sports and AD salaries, but not much shows up on the field of play.
The status quo most often remains the status quo.

Well said...
Regarding NCSU switching their vote.. I am hanging my hat on two things. First off, NCSU is a mid-tier ACC program, I'd like to think our brand is building but not to the extent of it getting an invite from the SEC. I think our leadership understands this. An invite to the Big 12 was more likely but I don't care for that transition at all. If UNC were to go to the Big 10 which is what I believe will happen then the SEC may come calling but that's a few years away realistically. Secondly, Boo Corrigan has deep ties to ND and I wonder if those connections made us rethink how we voted. One can only speculate...
